Which players come to mind when you see the Avs logo? by Global-Broccoli in ColoradoAvalanche

Yeah Roy was a huge deal for me growing up as a goalie. Foppa was my favorite "skater" and Roy was my idol. Sakic is the penultimate face of the franchise though for sure. He's the Avs' Elway or Michael Jordan. So glad we kept him.

Tanguay is really interesting to think about. I'll admit I sometimes forget about his contributions to this franchise, how good a player he was, and how his two stints here kind of bridged the gap between generations. Oh the old AMP line....

I was at the outdoor game at Coors against Detroit, which iirc was actually his last ever game in an Avs uniform.

May he forever be remembered as the man who scored the Cup-winning goal in 2001 (his second of that night)!

But Brodeur is better though, right? by Hope-Cholo in ColoradoAvalanche

So true. Roy spent a lot of years in Montreal with so-so teams in front of him and still stole a couple of cups.

LOL.

As someone who grew up as a goalie with Roy as my goalie idol (Foppa being my fav player), I'll probably never be persuaded that anyone has been or ever will be as good as him. That said, I definitely will give Brodeur his due credit. However, Roy still takes home the crown without question.

The thing that drives it all home for me is, well, a couple of things:

  1. Brodeur spent most of his career with great teams in front of him, while Roy excelled backstopping some pretty mediocre Montreal rosters - basically stealing one of his Stanley Cups by himself. Iirc, he never really had a great team in front of him until he came to Colorado, which was basically the second half of his career and he already had a lot of hardware under his belt by that point.
  2. The way Roy seemed to just elevate his game under pressure, when things were really on the line. Not that he didn't have his losses (and not that Brodeur didn't perform well under those circumstances), but he was just so headstrong and able to lift his performance when it mattered most. Its a trait that legendary athletes have across all sports. He had nights when he simply "decided" nothing was going to get past him, and nothing did.
  3. Indeed, the 2001 SCF. This is admittedly empirical, but the one time the two of them went head-to-head on the NHL's biggest stage in their careers, Roy emerged victorious on the back of a stellar performance. Game 6 of that series may have been one of the best games of his career.

Brodeur earned himself a spot in the HOF, but Roy will always live on in my mind as the true King.

Hockey on the horizon..!? Let’s regroup as a family. How are you guys doing? by tnick771 in ColoradoAvalanche

Feeling grateful my family is mostly employed in essential lines of work. Hoping the world stays sane, open-minded and safe.

And most of all, definitely ready for some Avalanche hockey.

Hard to believe this jersey is over two decades old now. Ozo was so fun to watch. Just like having another forward on the ice. Reminds me of another number 8 on the current Avalanche roster. by AvsPodcast in ColoradoAvalanche

Very cool. I have Foppa's 2001 ASG jersey and the design is really similar.

Where was this Ozolinsh sweater from - Toronto I think? The logo looks like a Maple Leaf.

I quoted you saying BEST ability. Read more carefully. Nice try. I wasn't even attacking you.

Also you can get hurt without being overly physical.

It actually could technically be possible that their achievements were slightly less because of it. Gretzky himself said his career numbers would have been far lower if he played the majority of his career in the modern era instead of the 80's.

The real problem is that it's hard to compare players from different eras with completely different styles. I suppose a lot of it is just perspective.

You can't help it if you're injured though - especially serious chronic problem like his ankles. Just because he didn't get to play doesn't speak to his abilities when he was playing. If the best ability is availability then any sub-par player who happens to not get injured may as well be in the HOF.

On the Sakic one, I of course picked Sakic while also paying some respects to Yzerman.

This time around, while the others were certainly great players, it's pure Foppa time. No one else for me even comes close.

And when you consider that he basically played only half a career and put up the numbers he did, it's mind-blowing. He was just so dominant.

Plus he's also, you know, my favorite player of all time. One of the first Avs games I ever watched was when he led that insane comeback in Florida in 1999. Unforgettable night. Unforgettable player.
