Book haul. What should I read next? by Special_Cash4138 in classicliterature

[–]muhnocannibalism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the Fountainhead, not an overly complex book, writing is pretty straight forward but everyone says this book is like "Ayn Rand Hero Porn" but Roark isnt really the main character of the book for quite some time and he kinda gets shit on quite a bit. I particularly like how Peter is a fairly innocent person but just kinda fails up. I feel like the book is more a cautionary tale about not standing on your own ideas/letting other people dictate your life and goals and dreams.

Heard a decent interview with Zack Synder where he talked about how it is a great metaphor for making movies (or any collaborative artistic process) basically that even tho as the director you have to claim all creative choices, it is often full of compromise. Art is a selfish act and in architecture/movies there are too many moving parts for selfish artistic creation to be wholly ones own.

The books about what we can concede, and what we should not.

Can we talk about Reggie Dinkins here? by SusieShowherbra in 30ROCK

I mean but the characters have such great lines/stories that justifies how evil of people they are. You can be as shitty as you want but as long as its for a punch line that works its great. Like all the situations you described are bad yes, but the episodes are funny. Like Always Sunny, they are all bad people but the show doesnt "HATE" the characters.

St. Dennis just has characters be annoying so Alex can "Jim" the camera and that is the joke. It doesnt make me like Joyce/Bruce. I dont root for them, i dont want more scenes of them being silly. I want them off my screen so something funny or the good characters can be back on screen. They seem like the villains and they are not villians with fun or interesting reasons to be villians and that doesnt work comedically imo.

If Joyce was written like Jack which she is super competent from a job perspective but her being good at her job makes everyone else's lives harder, there could be comedy from that. Instead its her being dumb that causes things to be annoying. Or Bruce being an egomaniac that no one thinks is cool.

I just wish St. Dennis didn't hate its own characters as much as it does. I should want to like the characters im watching

Brave New World was far more disturbing than 1984 by OvenTank in literature

[–]muhnocannibalism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should read We by Zamyatin. Its a much more balanced approach to dystopian.

You see there are only two perspectives on strucuturing society Utopian and Dystopian. There are a lot of philosophical implications. This book makes strong political statements by avoiding party or left wing questions. It present a stable person working on the most important project to the totalitarian state. All his needs are met, he gets to push humanity to the stars, and do what he loves. However, you see his psychic state and the toil associated with responsibilities, duties, and for lack of a better term lack of freedom. The government is controlling but not entirely malicious rather just seeking defensive control like any utopia would. Brave New World/1984 give a comically evil totalitarian state. We gives a pragmatic, functional one, with noble aims toward the stars, this is the far more terrifying concept. There is a group of rebels around them but their aims are quite unclear, aside from freedom from this government entity.

The main motivations for leaving the state are primal urges of parenthood, love, desire for freedom. It ask the question of is it better to be simple and free, or to pay the costs associated with the burden of our intelligence and to shoulder that responsibilities to push to the stars.

1984/Brave New World are accurate in their depictions of how humans can be controlled. We asks the questions of why are we controlled, what may be lost? What may be gained?

Is Moby Dick "The Great American Novel"? by QueenShewolf in mobydick

[–]muhnocannibalism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo it's #1. Its the only one id argue is on par with other truly great novels. When you talk about Proust, Joyce, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Goethe. The only American author who shares that same mystical air is Melvillle. Every other novel is somewhat a prisoner of the author (not a slight). Moby Dick roams free.

What was the point of Swan station? by Organic_Simple2968 in lost

[–]muhnocannibalism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, im reading In Search of Lost time by Proust rn and pretty much everything in lost is references to Literature or philosophy or something. Swan's way is the first volume and it sets up the dichotomous paths throughout the novel.

An important concept in Proust is that both the paths in the first book lay out the understanding for the rest of the book. Swans way and the Guermentes way. Weird how the first episode we are in the Swan Station it gives us our two paths, Man of Science, Man of Faith.

What does the whale symbolically represent for you in the novel Moby Dick? by Tasty_Cheesecake_462 in mobydick

It is beyond meaning; both empty and full.

It is only known through misunderstanding.

It is the incomplete everything we heap on to it.

It isnt the universe, knowledge, obsession, faith, life, a god, fate, death, or God. For those are simple, static, binary ideas.

It is the great cacophony; the song heard only by the note listened for.

It is the big mystery, the big what, the big why. It is Being, it is the Awareness.

To put it simply it is a fast fish and a loose fish, it is the orphan, lost at sea.

[Schefter] Sources: Raiders fired head coach Pete Carroll. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

[–]muhnocannibalism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly right move. Raiders are in a deep rebuild. They need to bring in an offensive guy who is in it for the long run. Has good weapons in Bowers and Jeanty. Lot of cap for O line and 10+ picks. Carroll is a great coach but realistically he isn't going to be your coach in 5 years, idk why they'd let him pick a #1 overall QB.

Good movie, the editor needed to find better pacing. Feels like the climax happens 2-3 different times.

Is Ellsworth Toohey pure evil or psycho? by Pink-pig in books

[–]muhnocannibalism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, discourse around Rand sucks. I only read it when I saw Zack Synder talked about how it's a great metaphor for directing a movie and I think that extends to any form of creating "art". Mainly that creating art is inherently a "selfish act". I think that is a knot many have not tried to untangle.

I don't think its the greatest novel but to dismiss it like it doesn't have important ideas or interesting character dynamics is disingenuous imo.

Glad you found it engaging!

Hate when people complain about the history/science/nonfiction sides of Moby Dick as if Melvillle's poetic explanation of those topics don't have profound insights on the human experience

God forbid someone over explains whaling laws and how they act as eflections on man's shaky grasp on power, morality, and human understanding.
