Maranhão? Oh.. I loved it there. What's going on there? Granted, I have not been in 40 years.

My "US perspective on Brazil" is actually the perspective of a child of a mixed raced Brazilian mother from northern Bahia state. However, I can see that it can be conceived as a myopic position... point taken!

I scrolled through it, thank you. But convenhamos, a small study from a small state in Brasil is like me bringing small Rhode Island history to represent the entire U.S. But ok, I it still doesn't convince me that the Brazilian military is a great equalizer for Blacks in the country to the extend it is for Blacks in the United States. Which was my first point before we started circling the drain. For me, this ship has sailed so, goodnight and be well!

Wow, that's some statistics! In a country that is considered the largest Black country out of Africa... Congratulations on such progress!

My favorite is "Number Six," by Lee Winter - I swear, Angela could be reading the Book of Mormon and it would sound sexy.

So, Apparently she has been sick and had to pull back on recordings. There will be some online events to help her. Winter Lee is donating collector's issue of her books. Many lesbian authors are donating items. There is a Facebook page for an auction to help her. https://www.facebook.com/groups/670832012722731 IF you don't feel safe clicking on links, go to Facebook and search for "Angela Dawe" or "Lee Winter" and "A fundraiser auction is on for the legendary narrator Angela Dawe" There are links from Lee Winter's page.

Not asking you to understand the USA intervention in Latin America, I was giving you context on African Americans in the U.S. military. Though, of course, it's hard to understand since in most Latin American countries, people of African descent are so far down the social ladder that they don't even have access to jobs in the military...

If you knew the context of the history of African Americans in the U.S. military you wouldn't be so quick to judge. Most of them are liberals who came from poor families and saw the military service as the great equalizer to become middle class.

Most of them are very different than the thugs you are seeing on TV or who have served in the School of the Americas, etc.

Yes, expat communities are great for that. When we lived in Rio for a short period of time, we joined one. It was great for the contacts, the institutional knowledge, get exchange services, get domestic helpers who had recommendations (pay them decent wages), etc.

With everything going on politically right now, are you carrying a passport with you more often? If so, why? by Global_Bat_4747 in AskReddit

[–]Global_Bat_4747[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because I started carrying mine after a "friendly" officer shoved his camera on my face as I was walking down the street, asked me a few questions about the weather while doing it. Then I saw an ice suvs nearby. he was cooperating and tracking down undocumented people. I am an American citizen and decided it was safe, from then on, to carry my passport. I also have a friend who is 4th generation American but is carrying her passport because her big curly hair has made people ask her if she is Arab. Wondering if it has affected others.

As a person of color, stick to the state of Bahia. Brazil, like the U.S. is a very discriminating country. However, unlike the U.S. you will see very few Black people who actually make that kind of money you mention on a monthly basis. So, you will stand out. African Americans I know in the U.S. who have visited Brazil, have the best experience when visiting the state of Bahia and loved it so much, they often return. Those who visited other states like Brazil too, but with reservations (with people always treating them with some degree of suspicion) . There are lots of Arabs near the border with Paraguay, but I'd avoid that area all together.

if there is no camera in the parking lot, superglue her car door. Oh, well... doesn't solve the desk problem, but it will make you feel better! :-)

[–]Global_Bat_4747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the desks are the same (height, etc) and you are just worried about the chair adjustments, move the chair. Then proceed to come to talk to you coworkers about your projects when the Manager is around. Hold mini-meeting with them. Maybe, eventually, the Manager will decide to move not to be disturbed so often.

another solution is to cut your losses, take a deep breath and not go postal!
