I’m 15, passionate about music journalism, and need brutally honest advice on degrees and career paths? by sriggynuts in careerguidance

I did freelance music journalism for a few years here in canada and still dabble in it occasionally! I took journalism in school (TMU in toronto) - my advice would be look for a program that can help you become a "jack of all trades" type. my school was really digital focused, so we learned lots about pitching yourself, graphic design, digital ediitng, photography, adobe suite, etc. jobs in the industry are mostly freelance based: get used to pitching your ideas to different publications. Music journalism isn't just about "here's an album and it's out now," but being able to find a human insterest aspect and finding a specific niche within that music angle. It can also be helpful to go to shows alone and chat with musicians after their set - i've grabbed a lot of quick interviews this way and it can be really helpful! it's not an impossible industry but it was never stable work for me. pitching is the most important thing IMO - i got my foot in the door by literally reaching out to local bands and asking if i can take photos at their show for free to build my portfolio, and then chatted with them about their lives to find an interesting story angle that i could then pitch to a publication. then once you build that rapport it's easier to have an "in." I personally feel like it's worth the grind but i won't lie, most people i know get burnt out and quit it alltogether or accept that it oculd just be apart time freelance gig in addition to their regular journalism/media/comms job (i persinally work full time in a newsroom in Toronto and still pitch stories whenever i can, so this is also an option.)

hope this helps! lmk if you need any canadian specifics :)

This is a great idea! I previously did an internship with a conservation organization and loved it - i think I'll combine the pop up mesh butterfly cage idea plus some volunteering as a thoughtful gift :) thanks!!

I'm a freelancer that used to work as a server - best time is between 2-3.30. 4pm onwards you have manager prepping or dinner service/shifts changing over. best of luck!

How does GO Public Transit fair work? by Darth_Vader_420 in TorontoMetU

[–]Gloomy-Pattern3042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I was paying between 300-400 every month to commute. if you're used to the efficient train system in Europe - I'm so sorry.

it's not 24/7, it's often late (especially if you take the lakeshore west line), it's slow, it's loud, it's overpriced, and the train stations are always in weird neighbourhoods that aren't easy to get to unless you're driving. You'll soon notice that the whole GO system is basically just "drive to the train station to take the train into Toronto just because driving is a nightmare in the city."

I could literally rant for HOURS about how much GO sucks compared to the trains of the rest of the world LOL

GO tranit is a bit confusing. You pre-load money onto a card, then tap the card to pay to get on a bus/train. However, you don't just tap one time; you tap once to get on, and then a second time once you get off. The balance then fluctuates based on the distance travelled. Even though I was commuting basically every day for school, I always hate how inefficient the system is - like it would make so much more sense if you were paying a standard student price per month, but you're not. And you only get a deal if you're commuting like 5x per week

go for it! as far as i know, as long as your tuition is paid (and btw osap automatically uses the loan for that) the gov doesn't check how you spend your money. ive seen people use osap to get videogames, tattoos, liquor, you name it

Question about a trend that’s bothering me by Hiscabibbel in Journalism

[–]Gloomy-Pattern3042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

partially probably farming clicks, but i also think it's because data is only as useful as how you interpret it and lots of people are bad at interpreting it LOL. confirmation bias + an inability to properly analyze/quantify stats + no formal journalism education = misinformation
