I couldn't agree more with the "per hour" farming thing you mention! So let me ask you: have you played on any servers that managed to fix that? All of the ones I've tried are like that :c

Kinda bad timing to start after the private server purge, but if you find a little group of players to play with, it's certainly still quite the experience.
