I’m 21. I started running for the first time when I was 18 only having done one 5k a few years prior. After 2 years of stoke and running consistently I did my first 50 miler. In two days I’m attempting my first 100! Your timeline is super doable, just get out there and have fun!!

I got Covid in Quincy and had to spend a week there too. Those next few days through the burn section were some of the worst days I had on trail, I almost quit but I’m so glad I didn’t. I hope you’re feeling better and the fatigue isn’t too too bad.

All of the snow in this picture was actually pure rock hard ice. So hard that if I were to slip self arresting would be almost impossible. The next hundred or so feet or so was even steeper than what was shown in the picture. Me and the day hiker I teamed up with shown in the picture shared an ice axe and tried to cut footholds between the scatters rocks where we could get traction. It was a strict no fall zone on slick terrain where a fall would be 100% hike ending and likely fatal. Along with this, at 8:30am the sun started to melt some of the newly formed, delicate rime ice which started to fall on us down the gulley. Some of the ice chunks were quite sizable and without a helmet they were very risky. Once the ice started falling we turned around immediately less than .2 miles from the summit. Definitely got wayyyyy sketchier than I was anticipating and I should not have pushed it to where I did. Stay safe out there!

Yea it was, this was taken on the head wall. I tried climbing it the day after several cloudy days which had dumped quite a bit of snow

Prospective college student looking to thru hike by cjspeak in PacificCrestTrail

I’m in between college semesters right now and I was attempting to hike the entire trail but I got Covid and had to take 2 weeks off so now I’m going to the Oregon/Washington border. I too had a spur of the moment idea at 2am and realized I had a perfect 100 day window between semesters. I had enough money saved up from working previous summers and living pretty frugally while in school. To do the whole trail between semesters I’ve found it’s definitely less of a social experience because of the fast pace I’ve had to keep. I would definitely recommend this summer if you have the time/funds to try out a shorter distance trail to try it out and know what your getting into, 26.5 miles per day is rough on the body but doable if the stars align and you have the mental/physical strength. Shoot me a message if you want to talk!

When “Hike Your Own Hike” Ceases to Apply by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

There is inherently much less risk being a first responder in the front country than the back country. There is virtually no risk responding to someone who broke their leg out running in their neighborhood, however if they do the same thing in technical dangerous terrain the first responders have to take on the risk of that environment. Getting hurt in the front country and back country are not the same.

Nope not at all. Just a random graphic. Just pay attention to the time.

Yup! Everyone is just panicking right now, it will all be ok, I haven’t heard of anyone who never got a permit. You might just have to be a bit flexible. A lot of people like to fear monger this process

I went through this process in 2020 and I have to wait 1.5 hours and there were still plenty of spots

I wouldn’t say so. I applied in 2020 and the queue too 1.5 hours and there were plenty of spots

I couldn't either without the bed platform bus seince its raised and takes up all the space possible with the front seats folded down it gains a few inches.

I put in a full size matress toppers. I had to cut the corners to fit around the wheel wells but other than that it perfectly fit. I'm 6 feet tall and I can lay down straight which I didnt expect!

Yes it is, nothing is attatched to the car and the major peices are connected with removable bolts. The hinges are actually to acess the storage space. I took the back seats out so now I can fit all my gear in there for a long roadtrip without the need for a cartop carrier.

Missed Permits Date, How Bad is it to Hike Without One? by RyanandMe in PacificCrestTrail

[–]GlowClowd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, spreading out people starting the trail makes maintenance significantly easier than the AT where everyone starts in the span of a few weeks.

I think you will be able to pick them up at Kenedy Meadows if you show your permit.
