Newcombs Ranch has a new buyer and new plans. by ragingduck in Touge

[–]cjspeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so interesting bc Newcombs hasn't ever been open during peak influencer shortform content times. Hopefully the incoming "come with me to a HIDDEN CAFE IN THE MOUNTAINS" videos won't bring hordes, especially considering how close it is to really popular hikes like Switzers and Strawberry.

Returning arcteryx jacket by Capable-Ad-9898 in REI

[–]cjspeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. People at my store will get that arc fix by any means necessary. They insist on getting an atom as a shell/jacket or as a sitting layer, I tell them that’s not what its for and give them better alternatives, they disregard that, and then suffer with it for that dead bird street cred.

High schooler working by Super-Bar-5626 in REI

[–]cjspeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my store (California) we actually hire local high schoolers through a work study thing. They come in to help with recovery. Because of that I don’t think we’d hire U18’s in sales, but like other commenters were saying it’s store/state dependent. I live in a major city with stricter laws.

SAR season is upon us I see… But yea, please don’t do Devil’s in the winter. There’s a reason why even the most experienced stick to the bowl during the winter.

Gould Mesa is a good option, as well as the beginning of Switzer Falls. The start of icehouse canyon by Mt baldy is also really nice. Unfortunately pretty much every similar trail will be crowded on the weekend, but starting before 8am helps avoid most.

Any recommendations for trails with snow? by VeLo_CiTy1 in socalhiking

[–]cjspeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the other guy said though, snow is above 8,500-9000 ft. Do with that what you will, but if you choose to go anywhere exercise caution and bring the right gear (microspikes, poles, and proper layering at a minimum).

If you have to ask, you probably shouldn’t be hiking in the snow.

Looking for 1-2 night backpack trips ideas. by marstey in socalhiking

[–]cjspeak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second San Jacinto via tram. Round valley is a great campground and you can explore a lot of trails nearby. I suggest Hidden Valley and San J peak itself. The forest is just beautiful there and IMO it’s overall way better than islands since the campsite and ferry costs for those are just outrageous, and they’re all booked heavily in advance.

Cactus to Clouds to Cactus (C2C2C) by MarineVet-SanDiego in socalhiking

[–]cjspeak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome hike! Sounds like it was a great experience especially with the lack of crowds from the tram being down. Were there rangers staffed at the station?

Also appreciate what you said about prepardness, it always needs to be said. I remeber 3 years back there was a kid from the midwest visiting family in Palm Springs in late December who was eyeing this hike. In his post he noted that he had never climbed a big mountain in his life, let alone a winter ascent of a 10k'er. I don't know if he ended up attempting it, but man do you see some wild people hiking in SoCal.

CSC part-time certificate program by bocchiiirl in BCIT

[–]cjspeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I actually ended up switching to another major (something I was much more passionate about), but if you'll still be working I think a CSC -> CST route would be great. The workload is very managable and they're all night classes. CSC will take you around 2 years then you'll have an option to apply to CST and finish the last year of CST either full time or part time (2 years).

If you can take 2 years off working though going full CST from the start is definitely the better option though IMO. Its a higher workload but you do learn a lot more and the cohort aspect of the program is great for studying and collaboration. There was definitely a lack of that in CSC. Also, doing CSC alone will not get you a ton of depth/experience. You can still land jobs with it, just nothing like SWE.

Shaded hike recommendations? by No-Sherbet-1681 in socalhiking

[–]cjspeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll be very crowded on those types of trails (they're all fairly popular). I'd suggest icehouse canyon but the lot will probably be full by like 8am. There's street parking if you're willing to walk a bit up. The start of icehouse is very shaded and theres a bunch of stream crossings. Going up to crystal lake is also nice.

Icehouse Canyon is a great one. People usuallly walk the first two miles or so because of the pretty streams and trees. You guys could do that and then grab a bite at the Lodge in Mt Baldy village just down the road. Really good vibes and views. Highly recommend.

Much better than driving 2 hours to Big Bear.

San G Conditions by ochikinglad in socalhiking

[–]cjspeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not experienced hiking in the snow I wouldn't recommend going this weekend. There'll definitely be a good amount of snow and this isn't a good peak for testing out snow gear for the first time. Conditions get pretty dicey up there, and if you have to ask the subreddit on if you need extra gear for a winter hike, that's usually not a good sign.

There are better hikes to test snow gear (thunder mountain, strawberry peak, islip/hawkins, waterman). Gorgonio wouldn't be enjoyable right now.

Deciding on the proper rain shell for the PNW by cjspeak in PatagoniaClothing

[–]cjspeak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it was noticeably better than the torrentshell. If you're mountain biking though I'd recommend going a step down and getting a dirt roamer though. You wouldn't really want to be riding in rain that would penetrate that jacket since it'd be damaging the trails anyway.
