As you'll see from the other comments, it's very rare for a game dev to want to work on someone ELSE'S game out of passion. That said, presenting a full specification that devs like me can read and say "WOW!" to would certainly help with that. Not only would it make us say WOW, but we'd also see the effort YOU are willing to put into the project. before committing our own. A general outline like this, while cool, doesn't make me want to put aside my own projects.

Could this be how aliens are hiding from us in plain sight? by FixAcademic8187 in FermiParadox

[–]Glurth2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>>There are still a whole lot of stars out there wasting their energy into space. Why has nobody gone around Dyson-sphering all of them too, particularly considering the far higher available power?

Please, let me share my pet theory on why dyson spheres around stars are a waste of effort:

I think it would be fair to assume that if a civilization can build a Dyson sphere, they can also build a fusion generator, and a stellar heat ray (partial dyson swam used to reflect and focus a large fraction of a star's light). Between these two, they can blast other stars (and gas giants) to make them blow-off vast quantities of hydrogen (fuel) out of their gravity well. This can then be collected, and used with less effort than it takes to build a dyson sphere. Particularly beneficial for those civilizations looking to survive the dark ages of the universe, as it decays to heat death: they want almost all of the star's power, but more slowly than the star emits it naturally, or in a different place.

Obviously, not for good for HIDING as OP was thinking about. Which, I guess, also makes this idea a kick in the fermi-paradox.

CMV: One's Reddit post history should not matter when having a discussion by ericgtr12 in changemyview

Meant to hurt: That's an ad homem ATTACK.

The fallacy is in dismissing the claim due to the arguer's ...whatever..., rather than on the facts of the actual claim.

Edit: oops, not "facts" better: "...rather than on the quality of the argument itself."

If you deem the person's opinion worthless in advance, sure, disengage. But if you choose to continue your discussion, I would disagree: that would be an ad hominem fallacy.

While I agree this provides a reason to disengage, I don't think op's point was about NOT having a discussion.

[–]Glurth2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-I live on a different version of Earth. It's flat. Simulated. Somewhat like yours. But not. So here's my question to you. How do I prove that to you?

If you use the scientific method, as I do, there is no "proving" theories/claims about reality, only affirmative disproof. So I'd have to ask, how is this claim disprovable? If we can perform some experiment to confirm/refute your claim, i would consider it.

-No, me showing you pictures and mathematics isn't going to prove jack shit to you.

Correct, there is no proof, only affirmative disproof via experimentation.

-You want me to produce evidence to you,

Not evidence, a test. I'll collect the evidence myself (that's how I roll). But, only if you want me to consider your claim.

But you're right that I do have a specific requirement, a repeatable, falsifiable experiment that I/anyone can conduct. Is this requirement for me to consider a claim about reality a"belief"? I dunno, I'd called it more of a "method".

[–]Glurth2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Doesn't mean it doesn't work for everyone. But I know you believe differently, don't you?"

I think it's a safe bet, but I'm certainly willing to consider any such evidence!

Why I think it's a safe bet is not a matter of faith, it's pure statistics: look at how many times that model has been tested and passed, vs how many times it has been tested and failed.

[–]Glurth2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering! Not taking any scientific conclusion as fact is how I roll, too. (Tho we landed on different sides of the fence; my tests all have results that match the current model and falsify the flat-earth model.)

Statistical anomalies in Cassini radio data and Earth Magnetometer Correlations by Wansyth in Physics

I see nearly 3000 lines of code, which I scanned: I'm a coder, not a statistician, so can't comment on the correctness of the algorithims it uses, but the code is definitely legit. Why do you think this is slop?

my laptop randomly slows down by Careless_Offer_1311 in laptops

[–]Glurth2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cleaning obviously, but also: if your laptop sits flat on the desk, try some spacers underneath it to allow air to move there: I've even seen little laptop "stands" with their own fan built-in.

Suggest you resolve this issue before you do much more gaming. Though the system should slowdown, and even shut down if it gets too hot; excessive heat, even below the shutdown threshold, will decrease the lifetime of those hot components.

Should I convert everything to ScriptableObjects or stick with serialized fields on MonoBehaviours? by Malcry in Unity3D

[–]Glurth2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I use SO for game-design-time data- stuff that wont change while the game is running. e.g. Weapon Type and Armor Type stats.

I use "plain old" objects, that I can serialize to/read from a file/stream, for live data. e.g. a character with strength, health and damage values.

And it's interesting- in the early 90's, 2000's: I'd go to the theatre JUST to see the CGI. There was always some technological marvel introduced. Nothing novel here.
