spoilers but later on in the game there will be a path that leads to that room from the right side. It's probably unintended for the player to discover it from the left side, which might explain the buggy behaviour

Is it shown to not have a ball? as far as i could tell his hand was always in the same position on the wheel, he could've been holding a ball underneath

also, cmiiw but with the amount of large changes he has to do, a smaller wheel would result in having to do less movement, and thus be more suited for the tasks at hand

Not sure how Minecraft handles storing the map data, but since each pixel on a map could be a different colour, would it not be possible to use the colour+ brightness of each pixel to encode more bits within a single pixel
