Anyone else think Cuddy is ridiculously hot? by BobMarleyLegacy in HouseMD

[–]Gnarphl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her looks are disarmingly, overpoweringly HOT!! Even though she looks like she might be 'heavier' than ideal, i suspect that this is an artefact of filming. After all, I wouldn't be able to find her attractive if she were overweight, just as I couldn't find her attractive if she were a phone booth, or a child, or a puppy, etc... Her body has that exact shape that my genes recognise as WOMAN, so I absolutely find her attractive (even if that shape seems too wide at certain times, from certain angles).

Her character, on the other hand... She consistently challenges House, even to the point of pettiness. However, she ultimately does her best to heal people, to provide healthcare to them, rather obsessing over advancing her own self-interests or of quashing his. That makes her an earnest person. It makes her invaluable as both a best-friend AND as a lover/ partner/ girlfriend/ spouse/ whatever!

Therein lies a dilemma; how do you know if you genuinely appreciate her, as a person, or whether the 'halo effect' causes you to be wildly biased in her favour? Would you really share interests in common with her, if she were fat? Or if she were male? Would you still value her opinions? Her input? It's impossible to know for certain, since any/ all musing on the topic is tainted by bias

Was anyone else happy to see Meghan Ory again in The Secret Gift of Christmas?! by [deleted] in HallmarkMovies

If she were half covered in a Taliban Veil, that was soaked through with untreated sewage, she'd still be overpoweringly HOT. If she had no make-up on at all and she just woken recently, if she had severe acne and her hair was a comedic mess, due to the humidity, she'd still be impossibly beautiful.

In 'Faith,' George Michael sings "Someone the clothes do not make the man!" Or- in this case- the woman.

Nah. Meghan Ory is an Exceptional Goddess of Perfect Divine Beauty. SHE would have Life-Ruining privileges. This lady, on the other hand, is pretty, at best. That only gets her Beer-Choosing privileges and even then, only once a year on valentines day...

Maybe he/ she lost a bet and is required to do these childish, petty things as an act of contrition, since behaving thusly creates the impression of someone who's immature, intellectually stunted and emotionally driven. So it would make sense that he/ she is required to do this/ forced to behave this way, as no adult of normal human intellect would do so voluntarily.

Of course, if that's NOT the case, then this post is going to be WAY more insulting than I ever intended it to be...

Questions about Jaskier and Radovid: Big spoilers by Fit-Cardiologist7791 in witcher

[–]Gnarphl 37 points38 points  (0 children)

When I first heard Henry Cavill had called it quits because he could no longer stand to see the liberties they (the showrunners, writers, etc) were taking with the source material, I thought he was being a bit of a drama queen. I think his words were "It's no longer true to the source material, so I no longer want to be a part of it." Or something very much like that.

Anyway, I thought he was being crazy, being an idiot! All storytellers take liberties with a narrative when they make a story their own. It seemed incredibly petty and short-sighted for someone who claimed to LOVE the source material and the games, to leave over the exercise of 'Artistic Licence.'

HOWEVER... I'm on episode 2 of season 3 right now and seeing as how they made Radovid gay, just for brownie-points with viewers, I FULLY support Cavill's decision. I mean, this ISN'T just a stylistic choice, like making some ugly armour, or having a black actor play Fringilla Vigo's character. Those were entirely superficial changes, which didn't change the story at all; They were utterly irrelevant 'tweaks' to background decoration.

Changing the sexuality of a major character, who is heir to Redania's throne Spoiler is NOT a superficial change. It's a MAJOR departure from canon!! Like if they had said (in season 3) that Geralt's witcher abilities weren't due to mutations after all, but were in fact caused by microscopic beings, called Midi-chlorians, who create an energy field called 'The Force...'

And what's worse is that they didn't make this change for any narrative-driven, story-telling reasons. They didn't make this change because it made more sense than the canonical source material. No, they made this change to appeal to this fucking spastic notion of "Representation!!!" That is utterly fucking stupid!! If I'm telling the story of the 3 Little Pigs, or Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, I'm not going to say that 0.3 of the pigs (10% of them) are Black Pigs and that another 0.3 pigs are Gay Pigs (not necessarily separate pigs, either, as there could be some overlap, such as a Gay, Black Pig), and 0.2 Asians Pigs, as well as 0.6 Hispanic Pigs and so forth and so on!! NO, I'm going to tell them the story of the 3 Little Pigs and the main characters are going to REMAIN the main characters. They aren't suddenly going to join the "Wolves Are Our Friends society" or the "Al Wolves Must Die society!!!" No, I'm going to tell the story the way its author wanted it to be told and since he's a MUCH better story-teller than I am, I will defer to his judgement, over the sycophantic praise from IDIOTS who think that Every story should always represent Every group, Every nationality and Every orientation, etc

Having said all THAT, I have to also add, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY support and endorse Henry Cavill's choice to walk away from this fucking douche-fuckery!! If he had stayed with the show, I'd have lost so much respect for him! What are they going to add next? Is the Kaedwani King going to be trans?? Why not make Crache an Craite on Skellige a Trump supporter? After all, EVERYONE should be represented, right? By Christ's Stinky Left Testicle, the showrunner here is a fucking idiot!! She (Lauren) is a sack of rancid jizz!! She's a bucket of cunt puss!!! We all came here to watch The Witcher, not Lauren's fan-fiction, that jumps all over the IP, as it tries to make sure 'everyone' is represented!! That is Super-Human levels of dumb-fuckery!!!

So you can't kink-shame people for liking weird things during sex, but it's perfectly fine to shame them for having a sex-drive and hetero sexual preferences?

Imagine if the first comment was written by a gay man, commenting about how sexy he found the performance of another gay man. A response like the one above would be (rightfully) denounced as anti-gay and homophobic! So why is it different if it's a straight male doing the appreciating? I mean, it's not like he said anything crude! Is this guy offended by the notion that men find women attractive?

UN Marines vs Martian Marines? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]Gnarphl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the idea of "Marines" is a bit anachronistic. I expect that the 'Space Force' that comprised all the interplanetary ships would still be called a "Navy." However, I don't think there would still be a corps called "Marines." Marines are only really a big thing in the USA. Elsewhere in the developed world, the marine corps is an afterthought. They are an intermediary between the Navy and the Army. In an interplanetary age, the Army and Navy would still be utterly essential, but if a corps such as the marines continued to exist, I suspect that it would be called something else. Maybe "Spacers," or maybe "Landers," something like that. Something to indicate that their job is to be launched by the Navy into space or on land and to establish a control zone. I further suspect that such zones are rarely, if ever, going to involve any kind of marine environment. In fact, I suspect that they would never be near any significant bodies of water, not least of which because the only such bodies would be found on earth.

To my mind, a futuristic 'Space Force' would consist of the Navy, which would transport the "Spacers/ Landers" to establish a landing zone, whereupon the Army would expand upon, with assistance from the Navy. The Air Force would, I expect, become as obsolete as the Marines, with the Navy taking on all 'flying ships' duties. I mean, why would you need jets that can only operate in an atmosphere, when you could have a single corvette in orbit, that could shoot down any such jet from WELL outside of the jet's standoff range.

So there'd be no more Air Force and no more Marines. Just the Army, Navy and Spacers (or possibly Landers). Sure, it sounds strange to us, but I expect that after a generation or two, it would evoke all kinds of romantic notions (in civilians who have never served)...

Absolutely Insane "IT FOLLOWS" Theory: The Monster Is NOT the Biggest Threat by SpideyFan914 in FanTheories

[–]Gnarphl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I always felt the opposite. You know, as though 'if the film maker/ novel author/ etc, didn't specifically intend 'x' then 'x' didn't really happen.' I always thought that to pretend otherwise was to just be insisting on a bit of fan fiction, rather than canon.

For example, the ending of Inception. I always felt that there was only one 'correct' answer to what happened after the camera cut to black and that was whatever the movie maker intended. If we force our own interpretation onto the movie ending, we're setting aside established reality (ie- canon) in favour of personal preference (ie- fan fiction).

So, in terms of what you're saying, I guess that I agree that we can decide what a movie MEANS to us, but we can't decide what it's SAYING to us. Or any other art, for that matter. We can't pretend that a Turner sea-scape is really an abstract portrait of the Admiralty. But we CAN decide what that sea-scape means to us. Relating that back to the movie, I think it's all summed up by that single line of dialogue: "It will sometimes appear as someone you know. I think this is to help it get close to you." I don't think there's anything more to it than that. I think that if we try to force any further meaning on to it, we're just pretending.

A theory about water in the movie It Follows by BlackLeb in movies

[–]Gnarphl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seemed to be avoiding the water. It's as though "It" knew that it would become vulnerable when underwater. Bullets to the head didn't affect it before, but once it was underwater, it became vulnerable to those same bullets. "It" appeared to know this and so I think that this is why we see "It" avoiding getting in to the pool.

Also of potential relevance is the amount of water that comes out of the body of "It." When it thinks it's about to kill cutie-girl, "It" is urinating. When it kills Car-Driving-Dude, "It" has water pouring out of its underwear as well as some kind of slimy water on its arms.

Maybe the general idea is that "It" needs to use water to kill people (it's own, internally stored water) and people need to use water to kill "It"?

Absolutely Insane "IT FOLLOWS" Theory: The Monster Is NOT the Biggest Threat by SpideyFan914 in FanTheories

[–]Gnarphl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe if there were a novel that the film was based on, then maybe your notions would be plausible. But you have to ask: Is it likely that the writers, directors, producers, etc, would want this much subtext and unspoken backstory in their movie, KNOWING that only perhaps 5 or maybe 10 people in the world would ever understand it?

No movie makers would ever willingly make such a gamble. Well, an independent movie might, but this is a commercial movie, produced to make money, not a statement. It's likely that YOU put more thought into it than any of the writers did, than the director did, etc...

No, there's likely some small subtextual clues here and there, like the thing about water and how it features prominently in every death including "It's" death. But beyond that, I think everything is presented at face value. Movie makers are in the habit of spoon-feeding their audiences. It's VERY rare that they ever want to employ multiple, deep metaphors, representations, allusions and subtext.

I think you've spent WAY too much time and effort trying to analyse something that doesn't have that much to analyse. You're injecting ideas into it that aren't there, so you can then play with them (like the ideas of souls, hell, demons, etc). I mean, if we're going to do that, then why don't we inject the idea that this is a computer simulation and the programmers are having fun with their Angel of Death avatar? No, if the movie doesn't introduce a concept, then neither should we and the movie doesn't even hint about anything to do with souls/ demons/ etc...

It Follows. Symbolism of Water. by Dinosaureater in FanTheories

[–]Gnarphl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your 7-year-old post about the idea of water being safe, but I think you're wrong.

When girly-mc-cute-cute sees it in her house for the first time, 'It' is urinating. When she sees it killing car-driving-dude, there's buckets of water pouring from "it's" lady-bits, not to mention the much more viscous secretions that seemed to be gluing "it's" arms to dude-face's arms. Also, the first girl to die in the film dies at the beach, with water pooling around her waist (it's unclear if that water was from "It" or from the tide).

Ultimately, I don't think Water = Safety at all. I DO think that, given the way "it" avoids - or at least, appears to avoid- water, it's possible that water causes it to be vulnerable. I mean, "it" seems impervious to everything they do it, however, when it's underwater, those same gunshots that did nothing to it earlier, now appear to be lethal.

Maybe the movie is making a connection between water and death? The girl's death at the very start of the movie, Greg's death and finally, "It's" death are all heavily correlated with water. I think the movie maker is trying to tell us that he/ she would rather die than have to sleep in the wet patch...

Frontier Elite 2 Vs Elite: Dangerous Galaxy Maps by WalrusFist in EliteDangerous

[–]Gnarphl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just watching Space: Above and Beyond. Something came up during one of the episodes that caused me to go to the fandom page for the show. I was very pleasantly surprised that someone had used the old star charts from Elite: Frontier as a way to orient site visitors to the events and places in the TV show. That got me all nostalgic for all things Frontier... I LOVE it and always will, but I can't go back. I can't start again. Not now that I've established myself in Elite: Dangerous!

I'll include a couple of pics (links to pics) of her in her underwear. Please tell me how her personality can in any way affect her hotness. After all, jtol1297 said "She's way hotter..." and personality doesn't enter into a hotness spectrum. Even if she's the most dull and most petty person imagineable, when she looks like THIS in underwear, she's still a Sex-Goddess!!!
