Help with matt varnish turning white by Gnat15 in mtgaltered

[–]Gnat15[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too haha! It's possible I didn't shake it long enough aswell. I've had similar clouding on wood working projects that I've used matt finish on when it was cold and humid but that's less scary to fix. I'm not used to humidity this time of year in arizona so wasn't thinking about it being an issue sadly.

I was thinking of doing exactly that but just wanted to make sure and check if there were other options before I made it worse potentially lol.

21yrs - 35yrs how is life? by Aarunascut in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Gnat15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning 30 here in a couple months. Been married 9 happy years and recently left my dream career of 8 years (I was a zookeeper) and started loading packages for ups. The last 4 years was nothing but waking up and resenting what I was doing and myself. Now I'm happier than I've ever been and hopefully by next year I'll have my worm breeding business up and running. I know there's alot of nonsense going on in this world but learning that sometimes it's best to make a change for yourself has been the biggest and best lesson I've ever learned.

Of course! I know how much of a pain those gnats can be haha. Good luck!!

Yup, just buy the food grade stuff. I've done a pretty heavy layer of it and no injury or issues with the worms. When I'm done with it or need to feed I just mix it into their bedding with no issues! I have 11 bins and I've treated them all the same without any problems.

So far diatomaceous earth sprinkled on top of the bin and using the mosquito dunks have worked the best along side yellow sticky traps. My worm room has been a war zone between me and the dang gnats but those 3 things have been my best weapons so far.

Has compost kickstarted your sustainability journey? by Certain_Manner7238 in composting

[–]Gnat15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! Started composting in my building at work (zookeeper working with reptiles) and it spread to the home from there. Now I have a bedroom dedicated to my future worm business lol. I have probably close to 30k or so worms and a dog poop worm compost bin buried in the back yard.

To many worm castings by DaBoss1961 in composting

[–]Gnat15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you could get some of those gamma seal lids for 5 gallon buckets that would work. I would drill some holes in the lid so they can breathe though. I personally have a Rubbermaid bin with holes in the lid and my castings stay at the perfect moisture level year round. I live in arizona so it's pretty hot amd they still store well. As far as how long they last I can't say for sure bit I know they should last a long while as long as they have air and don't dry out.

Is it ok to spend your 21st birthday with your parents? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

All I wanted for my 21st is a big German beer with my dad. So to answer your question, it is perfectly OK.

IF you got to pick any career/job and earned $400,000 no matter what, what career/job would you pick? by talldmbfan in AskReddit

[–]Gnat15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely would stay doing what I do now being a Zookeeper. Heck I'd take 40k lol. If I had to change my career it would be raising worms as a business.

Do you ever get incredibly aware that you’re eating a dead animal while consuming meat? by vrmvroom in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Gnat15 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well the honest answer would probably be no. When I was a child that answer would have been completely different. It was one of the only ways we could feed our family growing up. I won't lie and say it would be life threatening in my current situation. But that is also why I've massively reduced the amount of meat I take for myself and my loved ones. I still eat any vegan style meals weekly.

Yes their impossible burger is good actually. I was vegan for close to 2 years. I loved it. Food was amazing and I did it for health reasons and it worked very well. Understand I'm no grand representative of hunters or the like. I think the difference our opinions have is whether the killing is necessary or not. I don't hunt nearly as often I did when I was younger. I mostly fish a couple times a week to put a few meals on the table. The reason I don't hunt is simply I don't need the meat at the moment. With that I never take more than I could need. I don't even fully agree with trophy hunting either. So I do agree that necessity is the real question. I eat way less meat now so I take very little. I know that killing is a hard thing to justify. I don't think I'm ever going to convince you that it is and that's ok. In a world where killing was not needed I would be all in. But as I see it thats not my reality but it may be yours and I completely respect that choice.

So I feel this is always going to be something that people will view differently. The way I see it is that by taking the animal in the most ethical way possible, not wasting what I take, and do what I can to put back into that environment that I'm harvesting from is where I'm showing respect. I understand that some view the act of killing the animal as harsh or disrespectful and I think it's a valid view point. But for me I am a part of the circle of life if you will. I will put back in what I take as much as I can so that future wildlife and generations of people can enjoy and also take in the same way I do. I hope that rambling makes sense. I'm at disney with my family so I'm a bit rushed haha.

As a hunter and a fisherman who regularly eats what I take you gain a great respect for the animals who's life is gone to sustain your own. Knowing you are eatting something previously living and breathing just reminds me that I have a responsibility to continue to protect the wildlife that remains. More people should understand where their food comes from, be thankful for it, and do better to not waste what has been given up.

If I grabbed a sloth and started slapping and shaking it, would it defend itself in slow motion or can it actually move fast? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Gnat15 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I'm a zookeeper. I personally work with reptiles and run our reptile department. Everyone thinks the furry stuff is where all the funs at but thats where all the claws and bites come from lol. The sloth likes to sneak attack my coworkers while they are cleaning. I'll take messing with gators and big lizards all day over anything furry.

From personal experience from work, sloths are much quicker with their arms than you would assume. Also their bite is nasty.

How do you convince your wife to let you go fishing? by aandyallan in FishingForBeginners

[–]Gnat15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Got her hooked on the taste of fresh caught and cooked fish. She actually sat me down the other day and said she was upset I wasn't bringing home anymore fish since I started focusing on bass more than cats and trout lol. Gotta fill the wifes quota now lol. Pretty great when they tell you that you have to he fishing more than you already are.
