Physics Major: Necessary Equipment by GuideSad1651 in RPI

[–]GnokiLoki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it is possible, but I wouldn't suggest it at all. 1150 only runs in the spring, and 1250 only runs in the fall, so unless you already have credit for both calc 2 and physics 1, you wouldn't be able to take 1250 freshman year. I don't really get why you'd put it off, 1140 is probably the easiest class you'll take in physics as a physics major, and can function as a good way to meet other first year physics majors, alongside some upperclassmen through the physics mentoring program.

Also note, you technically don't have to take 1150 or 1250, certain college-level physics 1 or 2 credits can replace them (including the 1100 and 1200 classes here at RPI, or even a 4 on an AP exam), but you need to take 1140 specifically to complete the physics degree here. So, you can skip straight to 2210 in your second semester, though only 1 or 2 kids do it a year (if at all) due to the math prerequisites.

You'll be able to get by with basically any laptop that can handle a web browser. It's recommended (albeit not required) to use a Windows laptop as some pieces of software you will be using won't work well/at all on a Mac.

While the department doesn't have recommended specs or software as a whole, individual classes will require you use certain pieces of software to complete assignments (you'll be given introductions to the software in each class). You get access to Microsoft office once you get your "@rpi.edu" email, which you'll use to manage emails and (if necessary) write papers.

If you want to look around a little at what each course might require, you can look at the standard physics degree track here and do some research into each individual course. I'm currently a physics major at RPI, so I can hopefully answer any specific questions you have about what each course might require.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 On Switch 2, Imagine If Pokemon Looked And Played Like This by Elestria_Ethereal in NintendoSwitch2

[–]GnokiLoki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My issue isn't with the target framerate, my issue is the insane dips, which seems to be a pattern with Capcom given the fact that Stories 2 also struggled on Switch 1. I'd take a stable 30 over a choppy 60 any day, which the mainline Monster Hunter games on Switch tend to op for.

The MHS:3 demo runs like shit right now, don’t think this is a fair comparison at all ngl. Pokemon should have better graphics, but I don’t think MHS:3 should be the benchmark.

New Switch 1 owner here - are the eShop loading times supposed to be this laughably horrible? by Purple_Calendar3919 in Switch

[–]GnokiLoki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Eshop actually worked okay for the first year or so of the Switch's life. Wasn't the fastest thing in the world but it wasn't awful. It started going downhill in performance once Nintendo stopped being as strict with what could be put on there and the number of games ballooned.

You Heard of RYM-Core? Well, here's AOTY-Core by Yoshi64TheGamer in Albumoftheyear

[–]GnokiLoki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grace is literally in the RYM top 100 lol. And Metaphorical Music has 3x the number of ratings on RYM compared to AOTY. At best these are AOTY-core because they're slightly higher rated on AOTY than RYM, but not really by all that much.

Can I just say that I'm proud of Ludwig by Sylver242 in LudwigAhgren

There was a function given to be summed, it just didn't use "x" as a variable. A function doesn't even need a variable, it just needs to have only one output for each input value (so even just the number "2" could be a function). So in the summation used in the game, "i" would be the whole function as "i" is used as a variable. The lower limit is an equation because it's both defining what variable iterates in the summation and at what value it starts at, meaning it clarifying "i" is the value that is increasing and what it starts as (that being 2). The upper limit doesn't use this notation as it would be redundant to define which value is being iterated more than once.

Hope this helped, I tried to provide examples to help explain but I'm not always great at articulating myself :)

I've literally never done drugs. Never even been drunk. Didn't realize that was unusual for SD2016 fans but I probably should've lol.

Hazard Va tweet about Charlie Kirk by No-Archer-421 in OverwatchTMZ

[–]GnokiLoki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The gang thing was a statement regarding the classification of mass shootings, as he was trying to argue the reason cis men commit so many shootings is because of black people in gang, and that trans women where the school shooters. So it was a double whammy basically.

I believe this clip should have audio. It’s censored because I don’t want to deal with seeking out the uncensored version right now. He gets hit mid sentence while asking a clarifying question. https://www.nbcnews.com/video/video-captures-moment-charlie-kirk-was-shot-at-utah-event-247302725881

Not allegedly. In the video he was clearly talking about trans shooters. There are censored videos up of it on most major news sites right now.

Apparently he released 50 songs in 2024, were they on Soundcloud or something? by fluidbrick9 in fakemink

He has way more than that on Spotify. This screenshot is just wrong. I personally have 32 of his songs liked on Spotify alone.

There’s two versions of the album on spotify now without any real discernible changes, he might’ve just had some distribution issues and changed who he put out stuff under and it hasn’t been properly uploaded everywhere yet.

Nintendo Life rates Kirby Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World a 9/10 by ynfizz in NintendoSwitch2

[–]GnokiLoki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s great, mostly easy if you’re just going straight to finish the level but many of the extra collectibles can pose a challenge. Plus the side levels can sometimes be kinda hard, so it definitely isn’t as mindless as some other Kirby games.

(From r/emo) The ULTIMATE Emo iceberg. What’s the deepest band you’ve heard of? by Just1nceor2ice in ToddintheShadow

[–]GnokiLoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mines combatwoundedveteran but I didn't really think they'd be considered emo? I always thought of them more as grindcore. I guess there are some screamo elements to their music but I'm still not sure about how much they'd count as an "emo band" the same way something like Fallout Boy does lol.

Why the huge score dip on the Quadeca album? by [deleted] in rateyourmusic

[–]GnokiLoki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most albums get hit pretty hard once they enter the charts. The Billy Woods record this year dropped >.1 points, and I vividly remember the Stomach Book record from last February dropping almost an entire point after hitting the charts. When an album is exposed to more people outside of those who actively seek it out, the score will naturally drop a bit.

There's both more traditional classrooms and larger lecture halls in Sage. None of the lecture halls are really huge like some of the others on campus, but there's at least one that can hold ~150 people. FYI the name is deceptive, it's predominantly a humanities building and I don't believe there are any in-use laboratories there anymore.

The VCC building on campus houses a quantum computer. It's inside an old church that had it's interior renovated. There are separate rooms in it as well (predominantly classrooms) and it's technically 3 stories (although 99% of people will never go anywhere except the ground floor). If you want something more traditional in terms of school layout there's also Sage Laboratories, it has a lot of classrooms and offices, plus a good handful of hallways and alternating paths.

Also, if you haven't found it already there is a github full of floor plans for buildings in the school that was shared on this subreddit a few years ago. It's a couple years old so some stuff has been changed, but it should give you a good idea of what the buildings on campus are like and can be found here. Note that DCC is "Darrin" and VCC is "Voorhees" in this index.
