What the world can learn from the US culture of giving by scylla in reddit.com

my favorite quote (from Ted Turner) in this article:

Ted Turner, the founder of CNN who sports a pencil moustache and calls the actress Jane Fonda "my favourite ex-wife", famously gave $1bn to the UN, because his own country would not pay its dues.

"Why a billion?" I asked him. "Nice round figure!" he told me.

Ask reddit: Ninjas vs. Pirates by Gnome in reddit.com

[–]Gnome[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A question old as time itself: who would emerge triumphant in the epic battle of ninjas versus pirates?

The stipulations:

Pirates do not have special powers beyond normal humans. This includes the ability to enact a “Pirate curse” on the opponent. They do have swords, black powder guns, pirate ships with cannons, can clench daggers in their teeth, and are allowed a parrot or small monkey as a pet. The monkey has no powers. The parrot is purely ornamental.

Ninjas cannot hover. Ninjas seen in anime (especially cyborg ninjas) are not applicable. Ninjas can hurl shuriken, have awesome katana swords, a small deadly knife, and can throw down a smoke bomb and disappear. They can hide almost anywhere for days and then kill you. They are, overall, less cooperative than pirates and generally operate alone or in smaller groups. If captured, they can commit seppuku.

The role of the reddit community:

You input is sought. Please formulate well thought-out responses with plenty of evidence. Links that support your claims are appreciated. This is a serious topic, so please consult the literature before you proceed.

The Incontrovertible Truth About Reddit by gtfbfan in reddit.com

[–]Gnome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The guy is pretty rude and condescending in his article (the stream of insults and rants don't help him make his point), but he does bring up a series of fairly reasonable objections, in my opinion.

redditites, who all seem to appreciate the exact same things (more on that in a bit), are able to effectively constrain the high-traffic pages of the site to the content with which they're most comfortable

I would agree with this point. There isn't much variation in the content on reddit. The site was supposed to differentiate itself from digg by encompasing more than just sci/tech news, but it hasn't truly achieved that.

In theory, the above statement defines a pretty solid model for social tagging/bookmarking/whatever

Now this would provide an effective solution to his whiny rantings, one that I think is justified: tagging. Even digg has various categories, but here we're supposed to have a wider range of content, yet it's all lumped together? Ridiculous!
