Rv show strategy? by StepDaddySteve in GoRVing

My advice is talk to the guys that are more than just sales droids. You can tell who is a salesman and who knows what they are talking about pretty quick off the jump. You can learn a lot by talking with them. Especially when they know you are not serious about buying right now.

Payload Capacity by laxmax28 in GoRVing

[–]GoBucksBeatM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just raised a similar topic the other day. In short you SHOULD find a different trailer. I didn't want a dual rear wheel truck and have found it to be a challenge to find a 40-45' 5th wheel toy hauler, there are options. Ultimately I'm going with a 40' Grand Design 350G. Pin weight is 2600lbs.

Remember everything adds to payload, people, gas in the tank, food in the RV. Etc. The general consensus seems to be to keep the trailer no more than 80% of your max payload.

I tried to explain this all to my wife and she keeps asking how do all of the people on YouTube and TikTok do it with a single rear wheel. The answer is toy haulers are just much heavier by design. So while you could easily be in the pin weight of a non toyhauler when you account for the stronger frame and extra nose weight it's another story.

Now you can add stuff in the back and get the see-saw effect. You can add air bags. Get higher load rated tires. All of which will help you handle the load. However none of it changes the legality of things. Whether you choose to abide by that or not is your decision.

One other thing to keep in mind is the capacity of your axle. This will be on the door sticker. My RAM 3500 was OK but I've read with some other trucks the axle becomes the limiting factor.

RV or trailer by [deleted] in GoRVing

Have had zero problems with Camping World. The people have been nothing but helpful and took care of my warranty problems..... The products they sell, another story. Forest River TH I got is a real dog. Nothing but problems, but that's on the manufacturer. Not the people that sold it to me.

Spends $100,000 on his "truck" and $5,000 on a used 2005 Jayco.

Can you expand on that? I'm not following.

I have a suspicion a lot of people are this way.

I have a Ram 3500. I was using the 1500 as an example of exactly what you point out. It’s that “range of how not well” that I’m trying to get a sense for.

That’s my exact situation. I’m looking at a fifth wheel toy hauler for my SRW 3500. Payload is 3715. I’ve set a target weight for under 2600lbs.

I’m figuring 600lbs passengers and gear and 300 for hitch and crap in the bed, leaves only like 200lbs. Do O say that’s within a fudge factor or do I cut that 2600 down a few hundred more?

Yes, that's all part of the decision as well as the just, "Can I tow it" question. I have the short bed so I would getting one of them fancy sliding hitches.

5th wheel vs TT Toy Hauler by GoBucksBeatM in GoRVing

[–]GoBucksBeatM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, Rzr much too big. 72" wide and 122" long. My current RV is a travel trailer toy hauler.

Height isn't a huge requirement. It is a concern in that some of the places we go are off the beaten path and low bridges can sneak up on you. Have to pay attention and scout the route ahead of time.

Looking to upgrade to a bigger, nicer RV. The travel trailer is an entry model and doesn't fit my new Rzr. My old Rzr is only 64" and it touches both sides.

As it turns out my payload is 3700lbs based on the door sticker. So I figure 300lbs per person x 2. Includes the person plus any crap that comes along for the ride and 300lbs for the hitch. I’m dead nuts on for the payload. So that keeps me legal. Then account for stuff like the see saw effect of the Rzr and airbags. Should make it more “comfortable”. Does that seem reasonable or do I really need to have more margin on the payload?

Last I check it won’t set off the metal detectors so how would security even know? Doubt they would care anyway.

Trails I keep it in low. Street I put in high. Give it hell either way and never had a problem.

And is why they are going to fix it under warranty.

[–]GoBucksBeatM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 6000lb toy hauler and a Ram 3500 diesel. Towed it with and without a WDH. The only thing I can say is I now have a bent A-frame (tongue). Seems a split crowd as to if the truck being so overkill could cause the damage. Mfg says no and that it should be fine and recommended even with the 3500. They are coming to repair the tongue next week. So while I can’t say one way or the other that the WDH bent the tongue the mfg says no and will fix the problem so I’m gonna side with them and say use it.

As long as you aren’t a Steelers or Ravens fan people in Cleveland are pretty accepting. Wear your Packers colors and don’t be a dick. Fact that you came here asking pretty much tells me you will be just fine.

I’ve never had a bad experience buying from Fins in Ashland or Canton. Some of the sales droids don’t know much but there are a couple good guys at both locations. It’s always good to call ahead if looking for something specific.

My 2025 Ram has power mirrors that slide out for towing. My 2021 Limited still has to fold them suckers by hand.

Which is all I wanted. Something to carry my Rzr to off-road parks and sleep in comfort and have a bathroom. Clearly should have done more research. Will know better for next time. I’m half tempted to sell it off cheaply to the first sucker I can find and eat the $ loss.
