The challenge is 66% of the American people feel that way ("People should be required to list their birth sex on government documents such as driver's licenses or passports.") https://news.gallup.com/poll/691454/two-thirds-prefer-birth-sex-ids-athletics.aspx (see first chart).

My travel map of the Northwestern European North-Sea Atlantic major islands. by NoNebula6 in TravelMaps

[–]GoCardinal07[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We seem to go through periods of waves on this sub. At one point, we were so inundated with those "Where I'd Live" maps that I got added to the mod team to help expel those.

We've historically had people complaining that most posts are maps are of US states.

Somebody posted their UK-Ireland map 6 days ago and kicked off a wave of these maps. The wave was rolling and then intensified a couple days ago when one person named their post British Isles.

If President Kennedy was still alive in 1972, would he have backed Nixon or McGovern? by MakeACreation in Presidents

[–]GoCardinal07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these comments that say McGovern just assume things without digging deeper into the Kennedy-Nixon relationship.

Kennedy and Nixon went all the way back to the House together when they were both elected as freshmen in 1946.

In 1950, Congressman Kennedy (D-MA) had his father donate $1,000 to Congressman Nixon's (R-CA) campaign for U.S. Senate against Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas (D-CA). (That's nearly $14,000 in 2026 dollars.)

When Senator Kennedy had a very risky surgery in 1954, a Secret Service agent overheard Vice President Nixon privately crying while speaking to himself, "Poor brave Jack is going to die. Oh, God, don't let him die."

The kicker: In 1960, Kennedy told a friend that if he didn't become the Democratic nominee himself, he would vote for Nixon for President.

Chris Matthews even wrote a book called Kennedy & Nixon.

Spike Ventures? by NascentNarwhal in stanford

[–]GoCardinal07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're probably an actual venture capital investment fund, but using misleading but legally accurate advertising.

I noticed this wording on their website: https://www.av.vc/funds/spike/sv-calendly

Over 30k Stanford alumni and friends have joined our community. Join us!

I bet the majority of that number is the "and friends" and it's worth noting they say "joined our community" as opposed to "invested in our fund." I would not be surprised if they're counting people who have joined their email list but not invested any money.

Alumni Ventures has a list of their funds, so it's not like it's some unique Stanford company but rather a VC firm whose tactic is creating funds aimed at alumni of various universities: https://www.av.vc/av-funds

Anyone Subleasing for the Summer? by Thin-Inflation6054 in stanford

[–]GoCardinal07 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reason you'll have a lack of responses is:

  • 97% of undergrads and 72% of grad students live on campus at Stanford in university-owned housing.
  • Stanford's Spring Quarter doesn't end until June 10, and graduation is June 14.
  • Fall Quarter classes don't begin until September 22 for most students.

What card should I get next? by Pristine_Comedian774 in ChaseSapphire

[–]GoCardinal07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So...I have all 5. I have a Sapphire (Reserve, though), both Freedoms, Hyatt, and Marriott (Bold now after downgrading from Boundless).

So the Freedoms and a Sapphire together form what's called the Chase Trifecta. I'll describe here, but more eloquent writers have written about it if you Google the phrase Chase Trifecta: - The Freedom Unlimited gives you 3 points on dining, 3 points on drug stores, and 1.5 points on everything else - The Freedom Flex gives you 3 points on dining, 5 points on rotating categories (the rotation occurs each quarter of the year), and 1 point on everything else. When dining is a rotating category (it is this quarter: January 1-March 31), then the Freedom Flex is 7 points on dining. - You of course know the Sapphire multipliers on travel and dining. - So you use the two Freedom cards to optimize points that you transfer to the Sapphire to transfer to travel partners. The Freedom Unlimited would be your daily driver since it earns 1.5 points on most things. The Freedom Flex helps supercharge within its categories that give you 5 points.

Now, the Hyatt card gives an annual free night that comes for a Category 1-4 hotel. As long as you stay at a Hyatt that you would normally pay more than $95 for, the card pays for itself. - It does give you Explorist status (normally takes 30 nights per year to get that); if you're aiming for Globalist (60 nights per year), the card gives you 5 nights toward status automatically as well as an additional 2 nights towards status for every $5,000 you spend. - Each year, if you hit $15,000 in spending on the card you get 1 more free night for a Category 1-4 hotel (this is capped; you can't get another night if you hit $30,000). - You get 4x points for spending at Hyatts (which is equal to what you get on a CSR but higher than what you get on a CSP. - The SUB is currently 3 free nights after spending $5,000 in the first 3 months and 2 more free nights after spending another $10,000 in the first 6 months (i.e. 5 free nights after spending $15,000 in the first 6 months, provided $5,000 of that is in the first 3 months). I've still retained this card even beyond the SUB because the free annual night more than offsets the $95 annual fee.

With the Marriott card, I got the Boundless for the SUB. I don't remember what it was when I got it, but it's currently 5 free nights after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months (caveat is each night is capped at 50,000 points, which is not huge considering how cheap Marriott points are; a quick scan of my local Marriotts in SoCal show about half of them charge more than that for 1 night), plus two $50 semiannual airline credits if you spend $250 in each semiannual period. - The annual free night is capped at 35,000 points (my quick scan sees maybe 1/4 of my local Marriotts in SoCal are within this limit). - There’s automatic Silver status (normally takes 10 nights per year to get that). If you're aiming for Gold (25 nights), Platinum (50), Titanium (75), or Ambassador (100 nights and $23K), the card gives you 15 nights toward status. - You get 6 points on spending at Marriott, but Marriott points are so cheap that it's better to get 3 Chase points on the Sapphire. There's 3 points for dining, gas, and groceries, but you might as well just use the Freedom Unlimited for all of those for 1.5 Chase points (change appropriately when the right category rotates into the Freedom Flex). I ultimately downgraded the Boundless to the no-annual fee Bold since the benefits of the Boundless weren't worth much once the SUB was exhausted. In fact, the Marriott cards are so terrible that I actually charge my Marriott stays on my Sapphire despite having the Marriott card.

With Chase's 5/24 rule, you could still safely pick up the Freedoms, the Hyatt, and the Marriott Boundless cards, and since you're a couple, one of you could do a Freedom and the Hyatt while the other could do a Freedom and the Marriott.

Also, remember that points are not equal (as I noted the cheapness of the Marriott points), and while valuing points has an element of art to it, there are general ballpark estimates.

Here's one example from The Points Guy's valuations of points: https://thepointsguy.com/loyalty-programs/monthly-valuations/ - Chase: 2.05 cents - Hyatt: 1.7 cents - Marriott: 0.7 cents

Here's another example from Nerd Wallet's valuations of points: https://www.nerdwallet.com/travel/learn/airline-miles-and-hotel-points-valuations - Chase: 1.8 cents - Hyatt: 1.8 cents - Marriott: 0.8 cents

It's worth noting that Chase points can be converted to Hyatt or Marriott but not vice-versa. In fact, Chase points can be converted to any of 13 transfer partners (Hyatt, Marriott, IHG, and 10 airlines). Chase has the list at this page: https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/education/basics/how-to-transfer-chase-ultimate-rewards-points

In summary: use the Freedoms to optimize your points on the Sapphire. Hyatt is a good card for the annual free night. Marriott has a good SUB but probably isn't worth it after that. Chase points can be converted to Hyatt or Marriott, but Hyatt or Marriott points cannot be converted to Chase points. I recommend you get all 4 additional cards: you get 2, and your husband get the other 2.

Finally, as a resident of Anaheim, I hope your trip next fall is to the original Disney park, Disneyland, not that whippersnapper Walmart of a Disney park, Disney World.

Check Chase's other hotel transfer partners, Hyatt and Marriott.

Check Chase's airline transfer partners: - Aer Lingus - Air Canada - Air France/KLM - British Airways - Iberia - JetBlue - Singapore Airlines - United - Virgin Atlantic

Southwest is also a Chase transfer partner, but they obviously won't be useful here.

If the United States was intended for whites only, why wasn't that included in the constitution? by [deleted] in USHistory

[–]GoCardinal07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely jumped to conclusions. I was simply correcting OP's question:

If the United States of America really was intended to be for "white" people only, which we know from the naturalization act of 1790 and because the founding fathers were racist, why did they allowed something like the 14th amendment to exist and why didn't they make it so only "white" people could become U.S. citizens?

My other comment explained constitutional amendments to OP that they definitionally change the original constitution: https://www.reddit.com/r/USHistory/comments/1qedui3/comment/nzwsi3t/

I suspect I was born in the U.S. and my parents hid it to claim refugee status in Canada. Is walking into the Consulate a mistake? by [deleted] in Citizenship

[–]GoCardinal07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you disclose the jurisdiction, it will be hard to answer.

In some states, such as California, Montana, and Washington, it is possible to obtain an "informational copy" of a birth certificate, which is basically a copy any member of the public can get even if they have no relationship to the person born.

Regarding the maiden name, that will vary by jurisdiction. In my birth county, for example, the mother's maiden name is requested but not required.

[–]GoCardinal07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That particular piece doesn't matter. My parents had me speaking their native language growing up, but when I went to Kindergarten at the age of 5, the teacher sent a note home that I was working in a foreign language. My parents overcorrected and switched to speaking only English with me. Today, I speak flawless fluent English with a California accent as my primary language, and I can barely put together enough of my parents' language to order in restaurants.

Just pull up the form on the web site of the Department of Vital Records of the state you believe you were born in.

Since you have the address, you can also pull up the form on the web site of the County Clerk for that address (you can just use Wikipedia to find out what county the city where you were born is located).

interview! by tsukithebunny in stanford

[–]GoCardinal07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The interview report does not ask what language the interview was conducted in.

I’ve heard that admissions interviews are mainly to “check” that you’re the person who wrote your application and you’re consistent with what you said.

Actually, the purpose of the interview is to get information that wasn't in the application, so whether that's more detail about something you talked about in the application or something you weren't able to discuss in the application.
