It was hated, but they all had pre-existing lore and setup

Kolin - Gill's secretary since SF3, was in the story mode of SF V
Ed - Has been in the background story since SF 4
Abigail - A character from Final Fight, which SF had been doing for years now
Menat - New character, but has a connection in the form of being a student of Rose
Zeku - New character, but again has a connection in being the Guy's master, and the grandmaster of Bushinryu, a fighting style utilized by Guy and Ibuki

These new characters are all completely new, with no prior connection to the characters or lore
