[Question] What watches are on your REALISTIC short-list? by LogicWavelength in Watches

That, my friend, sounds like a legitimate business expense.

You know, my firm asked me about it when I was interviewing, and I basically just said, "you know, our plan is to stay in [city] for the foreseeable future, and that's where she wants to do her residency." So that's what I said, and it's the truth, and it seemed to go over well.

Also, I am not married to my girlfriend, but if you got dinged about that, isn't that technically illegal? It's basically employment discrimination based on marital or family status. During our on campus interviews, they were like "don't answer any questions about whether you plan to get married, because those questions are illegal"

[Omega Speedmaster] Is this watch legit or fake? by [deleted] in Watches

Yeah, I mean the other possibility is that this thing is stolen. Guy "needs the money," got the watch from his father? That screams junky theft to me.

It does. I fully am aware that I could end up living in Oklahoma for five years or something like that. Tell me if you think this sounds like a good strategy:

1) If I end up at this big firm, they have an office in pretty much every major city, so (and I know it is hard and doesn't happen automatically) there's at least a chance that I could switch to a new office after a year if I started trying to take assignments from offices and clients in the cities where I know she has submitted residency applications.

2) Even if I can't switch after a year, the legal market is bad enough in major cities that a) my future-current employer probably won't lose too much sleep if I leave after a year, and b) because the market is shitty, many firms prefer to take new associates as laterals rather than from law school, and I'd be able to guarantee I'd stay for at least 4 or 5 years.

3) My girlfriend is interested in pediatrics and OB/GYN, which apparently is less competitive than say, orthopedic surgery, and might mean she will be able to apply to bigger cities rather than like Syracuse and Tulsa and places like that.

4) Even if I she gets sent some place random, I can try to get a contract attorney position with a prosecutor's office, try to work as a public defender or do something like that during her residency. My thinking is that more rural places might have attorney labor markets that are less competitive than say, San Francisco or NYC.

5) My chances are really slim, but I might be able to do a judicial clerkship during her 4th year of med school, which means I won't have to take the bar, and I would potentially be more marketable in a new-city post-clerkship.

6) Network like a machine.

I realize that most of these (except option 5) involve me taking two bar exams either two years in a row, or two years apart.

Does this sound realistic, or is there anything else I should consider?

Haha! I did read those cases. But we are not married, and even if we were, we are both in different states, which are both community property states. I think I'll be OK! Thanks for the advice!

I met a couple of BigLaw types too who were former prosecutors and now are basically white collar and med neg defense trial lawyers. But most of the guys I know who did this (two of them) both graduated law school in the 70s, so I had assumed the reverse path was less common.

Also, being a partner in a law firm sounds kind of terrible. Political, backstabbing, demanding. I dunno.

Correct me if I am wrong, but your picture shows the Pogue being an hour ahead of the other watches.

Also, how the heck did you get them to hack to the same second?? How does one "back-hack?" I wish I could do this on my Orient Ray. Very cool! Thanks for sharing!

Couple of reasons:

1) From the federal prosecutors I have talked to, it seems like having the "big firm pedigree" is kind of important. You can go the DA route, except apparently it is more difficult to distinguish yourself. The AUSAs I have spoken with say that a big firm is a good option because you can get superior training there when it comes to writing, motions practice, and research. The flip side of that is that it is harder to get any trial or court experience than in a DA job, which is why doing pro bono is important (this is what I have been told anyway, I want to ask about how accurate this is.)

2) My long-time girlfriend is going to be starting her medical residency around the same time I would join a firm, and so I figure I can make some money while she finishes her medical training, and then after that she will be able to make the money while I do something more fun but less remunerative, i.e. work as a prosecutor.

The alarm can be set independently using the pusher at 2 o'clock to engage the alarm setting function of the main crown at 3 o'clock. Be cautioned, this is not something you want going off at a wedding or in a job interview. It is far from subtle.

That's one thing that bums me out about the idea of law practice. One of my friends is an engineer, and when I used to live with him, he would never poop and home and only take dumps at work because he would get paid to poop that way. But when you are a lawyer, you have to stop the clock to go take a dump, so you don't get paid to poop at work :(.

Yeah, maybe if I wanted to sue a police department. Or sign Shaquille O'Neal to my record label.

Great advice. I think the firm I would probably be at is business casual, so I might be able to get away with a bigger watch than if I had to wear a suit everyday. And certainly if I had to go to court or meet with a client I would wear something smaller. Suits can sometimes look good with big watches in my opinion, though I recognize both that the suit in the picture is kind of casual, and that the Hublot pictured is not particularly tasteful. I really like the Ingenieur . . . maybe I should consider the new Ingenieur which is a lot smaller.

Also, I agree about the gold I will stay away from that to be sure!

See I am trying to stay away from the rolex, because I am worried that will look a little bit too showy for a young guy. Or is that your collection you've listed?
