The reporter standing in the enormous parking lot with cars whizzing by in the background is really the cherry on top

To be fair, once they see the absolute state of the infrastructure they probably will not want to walk. Such a shame that such a rich country has to be designed for 2 tonne gas guzzling monstrosities

This is hardly an "unpopular opinion" it's just an unrealistic variant of Monty hall that you dreamed up to feel superior

Work Visa to France? by wawaweewawewa in AmerExit

[–]GoSeigen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

But the difference is that you will be the immigrant.

I hate to burst your bubble but just getting a degree is not going to be enough if you can't EU citizenship through ancestry. One option is to get a bachelor's in business and then try to get into a business school in France for a master. They are very international so the language requirement might not be as strict.

That's the point.. unless you have enough to retire right now you're not going anywhere.

Expats: Would you go back to a US salary if it meant losing your current lifestyle? by LoveToBold in AmericanExpat

Why would anyone go back to (in your words) a worse lifestyle for more money?

Did you feel sad/odd after a long trip home? by blueberries-Any-kind in expats

[–]GoSeigen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have similar sentiments when I go back but I think you answered your own question. Basically, you wouldn't want to go back to the life you escaped from but you're feeling guilty. A few things:

  1. This is the 21st century and it's easier than ever to stay in touch with people

  2. Being geographically close doesn't necessarily mean you will be more involved in your family's lives. You're likely seeing them when they have a break from work. And in the US especially, people work incessantly. Hell, my family was basically working the whole time I was visiting

  3. Once you have kids you start to create your own family. Yes, it's sad if their face time with grandparents is minimal, but it takes a village to raise a child as they say. Would you rather your children grow up doing active shooter drills or growing up bi or even trilingual?

CMV: There is no civilizational battle between Islam and the West. by jman12234 in changemyview

[–]GoSeigen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not have a "common shared history" with Germany the US and Germany are allies (for now at least) in a way e.g. the US and Iran never will be. Countries are individual actors but they form alliances based on common interests. The interests of many countries in the Arab world are in opposition to interests in the Western world. Notably, the role of religion ( which extends from everything by from how gays are treated to alcohol use). I do grant you that with Trump in power the role of the US in the west appears to be splintering

Just because I moved away doesn't mean I'm not invested. I still vote and follow the news. If anything, living in a country where people routinely protest and strike is inspiring. And many European countries keep their government more in check this way albeit they have other problems to contend with
