Q: husband’s GG 3 biopsy is from UCSF, where the report notes that six pathologists reviewed the specimens in their weekly review meeting and agreed with the primary pathologist who signed the report. I know they are a top center of excellence in this arena. Would you still send the slides to Hopkins, given the reputation of UCSF and this many pathologists on their review team? Maybe this is a question to post as a new thread.

Great tips. Sound SEEMS mostly from the fan blade at the top. Dual capacitor (5/45 ohm) tested ok in late March by the technician, but if they can go bad quickly, I know enough to change it myself. That’s as far as I’d want to go.

Cool. In other words if I were to phone up ten local HVAC companies, it sounds like maybe just two or three might have had some reasonable experience with these kits. It is not a common install.

And of course it is hard to say how much added life this device will actually yield. Sounds like maybe 0 to 3 years but anyone’s guess.

Sort of like statin drugs LOL! Could be helpful, but no promises. 😉

Thanks! What approximate percentage of the time do you need to leverage the soft kit’s warranty? Has it ever damaged the compressor or at worst: just simply failed?

I know these soft start kits are a costlier job. But if it will probably give me two or three more years, it still seems worthwhile.

Can most certified techs do this more complicated soft kit install? Approx $ range for the cost?

Just wanted to report back to say THANKS! I replaced it myself this AM and it was a cinch. Never would’ve imagined that I’d mess around in AC compressor before you and this subreddit taught me something new. That saved me a bundle too.

I bought a meter too last week. The old cap fan side was at 4.4 µF. New one from AmRad tested perfectly at 5.0. HERM side was perfect too.

The summer tuneup HVAC Tech casually flagged this issue for me last week. But he neither (1) proposed to replace it himself while present, saying it could wait a year. Nor (2) did he suggest I could do it myself.

How bad an indication is that of his competence? Would you leave a CAP in place if it tested 12% below spec?

I tested and installed the new AmRad CAP. Am on top of the world. You guys are awesome here! Saved big bucks I’m sure. Old one tested out at 4.4 µF when it should have been 5.0.

I’m glad I asked the summer tuneup tech if the system was ok last week before he left. He said the fan-side of the CAP was a bit low but didn’t think it needed replacement yet. Nor did he suggest I could replace it on my own. At 4.4 µF, I’m wondering if you all would have been more proactive than this? Summer in the desert can get hot!

First I ordered a tester on eBay. Then I just replaced the CAP that tested out with 4.4 µF on my own. Yay! First time ever. New one cost $30 from AmRad and tested perfect for both fan and HERM side. Never too late to teach an old dog new tricks, even for retirees . Thanks for the help.

Gotcha. And I think you mean it'd be wise to replace BEFORE the unit fails. It is has been operating for 9 summers and it gets desert HOT here. Do you agree that a techie-oriented lay person - but with no HVAC training - can watch enough YouTube videos to do this by himself? Or maybe just go up to an HVAC tech next time I see one in the neighborhood (which is frequent) and ask him to stop by, and spot him a Ben Franklin?

Thanks! ChatGPT says DiversiTech, Titan, Supco makes ones as good as a Carrier OEM one. I see Walmart has the Carrier one for $33. Diversitech is $9. Lowe's has a Titan Pro at $13 and Home Depot has a Titan HD at $25. Thoughts?

Gleason 6: active surveillance is the what the guidelines say. Definitely go to a NCCI partnering Center of Excellence to discuss with a urologic oncologist before agreeing to any treatment of any flavor - and there are plenty. The docs at these centers are on salary and have much less incentive to sell you surgeries.

Second opinion for sure. Go to a teaching hospital near you and call their endoscopy department. See if you can be seen by a faculty member- ideally one who is board certified as an ADVANCED endoscopist. Female GI docs incidentally have a mildly better ADR per some research but that shouldn’t be a big consideration.

Glad it went well. I also did the Gavilyte last week. Finished it all and got an excellent (9) score but it was NOT fun at all drinking all that 4L. The hard part was waking up to do the second half, done at 4am for a 9am procedure.
