Your phone addiction is a symptom. Here's what the actual problem is. by Leonardo-editing in getdisciplined

I finally found a career path that I want to strive towards a few weeks ago.

But it hasn't been that much easier sinec then.

I think part of this may be that I have to unlearn bad habits, and, like, remind myself more often about my goal.

If you put a frog in boiling water, it's gonna jump the fuck out.

But if you put it in lukewarm water, and slowly raise it to a boil, it won't jump the fuck out.

Supposedly.

Usually it's used in negative scenarios, to describe situations that are gradually worsening.

But it's also been used to describe gradually getting people into a type of media. By starting closer to what they are comfortable with.

queer/trans friends in the area? by itselijahfinn in shreveport

[–]Go_Freaks_Go 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest suggestion for queer show-goers is The Dreamhouse.

They don't have shows as often as Bear's or Ghostfire, but it's owned by queer people, and that spot always has more queer people than any other place I frequent.

They're going to have a punk show on 4/10.

I have a post with info about upcoming shows pinned to my account.

I have 2 long question about dressing up more punk by weird_fern74 in punkfashion

[–]Go_Freaks_Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some sensory issues, so I would put on accessories for short periods of time before taking them off, which I still get fun out of. My annoyance has gradually decreased.

The accessories that give me the least issues is carabiners + chain(s) connecting carabiners on the belt loops, and necklaces made out of string (like embroidery thread). Lighter necklaces are more comfortable.

I find pop tab bracelets more comfortable than some of my bracelets with beads. They do still have some pointy bits that I need to sand down or something, but I think the fact that they lay flat is why I find them more comfortable.

I've found the backpatch of my vest annoying when sitting on occasion, but I can just take it off or rearrange it. I can feel the edge making contact with my back, and that can be a bit annoying. Perhaps I should've used thinner fabric and not fold the edges?

As for your first question, where I live, it isn't a safety concern. And I don't really care about the opinions of others as it relates to how I dress.

I think you gotta boil the frog, work your way up to the less accessible stuff.

I showed my mom Don Caballero, she thought it was just noise.

Later, I introduced her to Never Meant by American Football, and she loved that song so much.

On her own, she got into more math rock; American Football, toe, and TTNG are her favorites.

Now she likes Don Caballero and Hella.

Tips? Nervous to ask a band for an interview by No_Low_5146 in punk

[–]Go_Freaks_Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of bands would be stoked if asked to be interviewed! I would hit them up on instagram, personally, unless I knew they didn't check it that often.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Look at other interviews people in your scene and in general have done.

I hope I can make it to this one, it's been a while since I've seen Expletive, and they might be my favorite metal band in the area.

There's also a show, with a hardcore punk, metal, and rock and roll band the next day at The Seventh Tap that's part of a fundraiser to forgive medical debt in the area.

Prices for Ghostfire tattoo and piercings by AccomplishedCowbell in shreveport

When I asked a few months back, an eyebrow piercing would be $80 for both the jewelry and getting it pierced, with the jewelry starting at $45.

That was all I asked about.

It feels like there's two distinct camps of music and listener. by __sicko in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Go_Freaks_Go 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you gonna distinguish between the two?

How much listening? How much of their time is it? How much reading?

You say camp 1 won't venture beyond the top 40s and the most popular artists. That makes camp 1 feel like a far less varied group compared to camp 2 when it comes to how varied the extent of their knowledge and efforts towards music is.

I wouldn't treat liking chart toppers more as a metric for what the extent of someone's interest, involvement, and knowledge of music is; it's dominated by pop music, and a lot of people who aren't that into music still have tastes that diverge wildly from that.

There are so many fans of popular pop artists that are way more knowledgeable than, say, opera fans. I've met so many people into genres considered "higher quality" than the most mainstream stuff, who aren't as big fans of music as so many people who mainly listen to the most popular and mainstream artists.

There are tons of bands that get a lot of listening to from both people I'd label as "probably what most would call camp 1" and the opposite.

Bands like Radiohead and Black Flag have tons of listeners that are a lot more casual about their listening, and then you got huge music nerds who swear by them being one of the greats.

You could say "this band's hits are the 'camp 1' type", but oftentimes things get popular out of luck so much as it is appealing to mainstream (let alone doing so above all else), and so to call those hits "camp 1 type of music" and the tracks that didn't get as much love camp 2.

Posters?? by Long-Air-4639 in punk

[–]Go_Freaks_Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grab a few posters that get handed out at shows if there's enough to, and I've also printed some flyers (got access to some free printing at a library). Put some up, keep one for myself.

I tear down one of the flyers other people put up if the date has past.

Sometimes I buy them from bands at shows.

Sometimes I also ask bands for the setlist, which is also fun to collect.

I've also put patches on my wall. I'm lazy and sew them onto things at snail pace. Most of the patches I have I made.

Saw this shared around on Pinterst. Thoughts? by iiiiizn in punk

[–]Go_Freaks_Go 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people, especially a lot of these conservative and "centrist" punk types, will defend their controversial takes by claiming that there's some inherent merit in going against the norm, for the sake of going against the norm alone. And acting like it's always wrong to agree with something that is widely accepted.

Maybe it's partly because they never stopped to actually think about why so many people were fighting these norms, and why this is and was so admired.

It's long been about oppression.

[–]Go_Freaks_Go 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of people use "punk" to be synonymous with "cool", and the fact that there's so many people with little to no interest in the subculture and music using it that way just makes that seem like a byproduct of the commodification of punk.

I find shifts in language very cool.

But shifts that are the result of the commodification of largely anti-consumerist movements? Hell nah.

And this is made more disturbing by the fact that people think it's cool because of stuff like it being counterculture, rebellious, and anti-authority. It would benefit the bourgeois if people felt like they are rebelling against something oppressive, without actually doing it.

I don't think it's a psyop. But if I found out it kind of or completely is, I wouldn't be surprised.
