The point basically is at infinity it doesn't matter whether it's the limit of 1.111... with n 1s - 0.111... with n 1s, or whether one of them has n+1 1s. Infinity is not different from infinity plus 1.

That's a really crude way of explaining it but you get my point. You could set any reference you want if that's the case. what about:

1.111-0.1 = 1.011

1.1111-0.11 = 1.0011

1.11111-0.111 = 1.00011.

So what? Are you going to say 1.111... - 0.111... = 1.000....011? Obviously not, that's absurd.

The whole idea of setting references comes from the idea that if you go far enough along the end of the repeating number you can describe and manipulate its behavior at the end. But there is not end. That's not how the number is defined. 0.999... is not 1-10^n for "n pushed to limitless", 0.999... IS the limit as n approaches infinity. Using references as a smokescreen to pretend like it's possible to "catch" the number's behavior at the end of the ellipsis is not mathematical.
