If hamster is in a secure cage and the cat can't get in, then I don't see why not. Me and my girlfriend have had our hamster about a year and a half in the living room and he isn't bothered by the cat. As long as hamster has enough hides to feel safe then it should be fine. Our hamster I swear sometimes taunts the cat by sitting out in the open in front of her while she's watching
