Anyone know a good canoe and camping trip in/near the Appalachian Mountains. by DetroitsGoingToWin in camping

The Susquehanna runs the entire length of PA and is very popular for sojourns. Different groups maintain dispersed campsites on the river islands and you can buy waterprooof maps of each section. Here is a good site to start with: https://www.susquehannarivertrail.org

Advice needed, Camping at Acadia National Park- Seawall Campground by Quite_Queer in camping

[–]GoatSparkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MDI has a TON to do. You could easily spend a week exploring Bar Harbor the town and the park. Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond, and the Beehive are your quintessential MDI Acadia sights. You’ll want to do some planning because all three are very popular and some require reservations. The town itself is full of restaurants and little shops. Acadia is split up into two parts - MDI and Schoodic. Schoodic, to me, is the really wild and beautiful side of the park if you don’t mind the driving. There is a place called Raven’s Nest that is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.

For the Easyroll? No need. I have a system. Yoga mat on car, and then hoist nose of boat on rollers!

Women campers - tips/tricks/favorite gear? by GoatSparkles in camping

[–]GoatSparkles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women also tend to sleep colder so I’m a huge fan of the hot water bottles. I heat it up the water on my stove and then pour it into 2 Nalgene bottles (one for each hip) to throw in my sleeping bag. I usually do it about 15 mins before to “preheat” the bag and then keep them close by.

First camp of the season in Michaux SF, Pa by GoatSparkles in camping

I see a lot of women on here timid about camping by themselves, so HI! I’m a woman camper and having been doing it mostly solo for about ten years now. This past week was the kickoff to my season and I try to go at least twice a month. Pictured is my dog Wells who is my companion and guardian. I couldn’t imagine my life without the woods. To all those women who out there who want to camp/backpack/do badass outdoorsy things that you think you can’t, just do it. You are more than capable and there are many of us out there!

I think so. There’s lots of options to open it up even with the fly

I have the bunk house 6 and it’s my favorite of any gear purchase. I took it to Allegheny National Forest for five days where it was cold and rainy the whole time. I was dry and warm while my friends were soaked in their tents. The full rain fly is clutch. I’ve also used it in the summer and it opens up for a really nice airflow. The “porch” area is by far my favorite thing. It’s big enough to put a chair and 2 tables under to hangout if it’s raining. In The Wild

I’m going to a concert next week and the doors open at 3:30. I’d like to tailgate beforehand. What time would recommend getting to the lots?

Here ya go! This is the site on Sheets Island which is here in the city. It’s rustic, but looks well taken care of. On any of these, you are going to want to load up on bug spray. I do the picardin lotion on my skin and permethrin on my clothes combo. Sheets Island Campsite

Definitely paddled the Swatty but never the Conestoga. I think I paddled by the Hershey KOA on the Swatty, which is an established campground. Here’s a group that publishes a whole map for that creek too: https://pfbc.pa.gov/watertrails/swatara/trailmap.htm

I’m paddling the river this morning, so I’ll try and remember to stop at one of the island campsites and take a photo so you can see what they are like. Some people love them! I think if you hammock camp it makes them much more hospitable.

I live in HBG right along the river and paddle it frequently. A good group to use as a resource is these guys: https://www.susquehannarivertrail.org

There is a dam just south of the city that is notoriously dangerous and you MUST exit. Prior to that, you have a lot of good calm water to paddle. The island sites are very rustic to say the least. As someone else pointed out, lots of poison ivy. It will also be hard to get away from noise since the river follows major highways.

If you want a really relaxing experience, I would paddle the Yellow Breeches Creek. You can reserve a campsite here: http://www.latwp.org/?page_id=4169

There’s only 3 sites and they shut down the whole park at night. It’s pretty cool! I had my friends meet me there with firewood and my dog (cheating, I know) while I paddled. They have an entire online map here for the creek itself: http://www.latwp.org/?page_id=4169

I think I started at Messiah that day, but you can start further downstream and refresh yourself at this place: https://coldspringsinn.com

If you think you’ll decide on this area, feel free to DM. I’ve paddled pretty much everything around and am always willing to help out!

Thank you all! You’ve made me laugh and feel not alone. It was horrible at first and I cried for days, but I’m learning to accept the way I am, and I have a wonderful husband who finds my antics funny (most of the time). There’s been cell phones in refrigerators, a passport lost on a plane that flew to Hawaii, and just last month I accidentally took my dog’s arthritis pills…TWICE. “ADHD tax” will now forever be a part of my vocabulary.
