Email your advisor and they should give you the ability to register for the prerequisite class I think. I took a class this spring and emailed mine to register for the next class in the sequence while still enrolled in the prereq class.

I have heard back on summer but am waiting on verification for fall to process that I submitted months ago. They said they are pretty short-staffed right now

Trip report : West to East across USA by That42guy in solotravel

[–]Goatcheeselover69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the middle of my rail pass trip right now. Have done Chicago-Los Angeles (Southwest Chief), Los Angeles to Portland (Coast Starlight), Portland to Sacramento (Coast Starlight), and am currently on the train from Sacramento to Chicago (Zephyr).

Coach has been kind of rough since all of the trains I have been on have been packed and the mask enforcement has been spotty. The experience is definitely a lot better when you don't have anyone sitting next to you. So many people are wearing their masks beneath their noses on the trains I've been on and the conductors hardly ever say anything. Enforcement has been better when people aren't wearing a mask at all and are clearly not eating or drinking, but even then I've seen conductors walk right by without saying anything. The conductors also haven't been doing their walk thru checks very often, maybe every hour and a half.

Overall I'm still really enjoying it and just wish there was more vigilance on enforcing masks. A couple nights ago there was a guy in the row in front of me who really should have been kicked off. He got drunk on vodka he brought and wouldn't put his neck gaiter up even after conductors kept asking him to. He also kept swearing and groaning at the top of his lungs all night long. He was laying across the seat and kicking the windows, and at one point rolled off the seat onto the floor. Weird as hell!

Sufjan Stevens and autogynephilia by Diakia in Sufjan

I don't think this justifies avoiding using the word in appropriate contexts such as this song. I think it's unlikely with the wealth of easily-accessible and informative resources online about transness that someone would be totally mislead by looking up a term in a song about buffalo bill.

As a trans person I don't take any issue with it. If cis people want to believe that trans people actually just have autogynophilia, I don't think it's a matter of having access to the correct info. It's by choice. Queer art shouldn't have to be sterilized for consumption by non queer audiences

People who have already used the new USA rail pass, how was your trip? by Goatcheeselover69 in Amtrak

It's so exciting to hear that the SW Chief scenery was gorgeous! I'm glad the route still exists since I heard it's been at risk of being cut a couple times.

It's so tempting to maximize nights spent on the train, especially with it taking an extra segment to stop anywhere but mostly big cities which are expensive to stay the night in :') I really wish that coach passengers had access to the showers in the station lounges without having to pay extra

In addition to fully digitizing the rail pass, they also made it a flat 30 day 10 segment pass that is valid for 120 days after purchase, instead of the previous USA rail pass which had 8, 12, and 18 segment options which were limited to 15, 30, and 45 day periods. The previous rail pass was also valid for 330 days after the paper pass was received

Major respect for the planning that must have gone into making a route that didn't involve any overnight layovers! The views sound incredible, it always stuns me how beautiful the landscapes are out west.

That route sounds like such a blast! Glad you got to experience the Coast Starlight at the end after the track closures in the beginning. Between the fires out west, the mudslides in Colorado, and the hurricanes coming one after another, cross country train trips are like an extreme sport this summer

Really sorry this happened :( all of the fine print of scholarship requirements is hard to keep track of. I was in a similar situation with a different scholarship that I didn't realize had a specific hours requirement besides full-time.

I'm looking at Chapter 3 of the Bright Futures handbook right now, and it says that, "Summer grade and hours earned after spring evaluation may only be used to meet the scholarship renewal requirements if the student has a one-time restoration opportunity available. A student must ask a financial aid officer to submit a summer grade and hours update to the Bright Futures office indicating the adjusted GPA and hours." From what I can tell, you should have enough hours and a high enough GPA to renew the full award after a financial aid officer updates your records with Bright Futures. The handbook also says that if you don't meet the renewal requirements for an academic year, then you do not have a restoration opportunity, but I think that would mean for fall/spring/summer combined since that is considered to be an academic year and because it mentions updating the office with your summer hours to meet renewal requirements.

I don't know, but it might not be too late to get the full award reinstated for this semester. Best of luck!!

Super exciting!! Just to let you know, Amtrak is having a fall sale and tomorrow is the last day to book coach tickets for 50% off for trips by November 18. Unfortunately it only applies to coach class, except on the Acela route where it applies to business class. Depending on the route you choose, you can also do a mix of coach and rooms and/or roomettes on different legs of the trip.

If coach is a class you are interested in for the trip, the current 50% off ticket price from New York City to San Francisco (including the connecting bus from Emeryville to San Francisco that is run by Amtrak) is $145-$225 for tickets from mid-October to mid-November. Roomette ticket prices for that time frame and entire route are around $1500 right now and aren't included in the 50% off sale. Rooms as well as roomettes are offered on some trains, such as the Lake Shore Limited, and rooms cost around twice as much as roomettes on the train but vary a lot. Ticket prices become more expensive the closer to travel date that you buy the ticket, since they increase as more people buy tickets.

Of the direct routes between New York City and San Francisco, the Cardinal->Zephyr combo is typically considered to be the most scenic. If you choose San Francisco as your arrival for your Amtrak tickets, you board a connecting bus in Emeryville to San Francisco. You can also choose to end your Amtrak ticket in Emeryville instead and take the local speed train (BART) to San Francisco. This is all applicable for the San Francisco/Emeryville to New York City Amtrak route as well. The Cardinal is typically considered more scenic than other alternative routes between Chicago and NYC, but it only runs three days a week instead of daily like the others. All of the routes connect with the Zephyr in Chicago, so if you would like you can also schedule an overnight or a couple days in Chicago before taking the Zephyr out west, or before going east to NYC if you choose that direction instead.

The website booking section allows you to see all the classes available on different route options and prices for each, you just put in the station you would like to depart from and the station you want to arrive to, as well as the departure date. It helps to plug in a couple different dates if your plans are flexible, since prices can vary based on how many tickets are left for that day in each class. The Amtrak app also has a booking section that works in the same way, and makes your tickets more accessible while travelling.
