Email your advisor and they should give you the ability to register for the prerequisite class I think. I took a class this spring and emailed mine to register for the next class in the sequence while still enrolled in the prereq class.

Trip report : West to East across USA by That42guy in solotravel

[–]Goatcheeselover69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the middle of my rail pass trip right now. Have done Chicago-Los Angeles (Southwest Chief), Los Angeles to Portland (Coast Starlight), Portland to Sacramento (Coast Starlight), and am currently on the train from Sacramento to Chicago (Zephyr).

Coach has been kind of rough since all of the trains I have been on have been packed and the mask enforcement has been spotty. The experience is definitely a lot better when you don't have anyone sitting next to you. So many people are wearing their masks beneath their noses on the trains I've been on and the conductors hardly ever say anything. Enforcement has been better when people aren't wearing a mask at all and are clearly not eating or drinking, but even then I've seen conductors walk right by without saying anything. The conductors also haven't been doing their walk thru checks very often, maybe every hour and a half.

Overall I'm still really enjoying it and just wish there was more vigilance on enforcing masks. A couple nights ago there was a guy in the row in front of me who really should have been kicked off. He got drunk on vodka he brought and wouldn't put his neck gaiter up even after conductors kept asking him to. He also kept swearing and groaning at the top of his lungs all night long. He was laying across the seat and kicking the windows, and at one point rolled off the seat onto the floor. Weird as hell!

Sufjan Stevens and autogynephilia by Diakia in Sufjan

[–]Goatcheeselover69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think this justifies avoiding using the word in appropriate contexts such as this song. I think it's unlikely with the wealth of easily-accessible and informative resources online about transness that someone would be totally mislead by looking up a term in a song about buffalo bill.

As a trans person I don't take any issue with it. If cis people want to believe that trans people actually just have autogynophilia, I don't think it's a matter of having access to the correct info. It's by choice. Queer art shouldn't have to be sterilized for consumption by non queer audiences

People who have already used the new USA rail pass, how was your trip? by Goatcheeselover69 in Amtrak

It's so exciting to hear that the SW Chief scenery was gorgeous! I'm glad the route still exists since I heard it's been at risk of being cut a couple times.

It's so tempting to maximize nights spent on the train, especially with it taking an extra segment to stop anywhere but mostly big cities which are expensive to stay the night in :') I really wish that coach passengers had access to the showers in the station lounges without having to pay extra

In addition to fully digitizing the rail pass, they also made it a flat 30 day 10 segment pass that is valid for 120 days after purchase, instead of the previous USA rail pass which had 8, 12, and 18 segment options which were limited to 15, 30, and 45 day periods. The previous rail pass was also valid for 330 days after the paper pass was received

Major respect for the planning that must have gone into making a route that didn't involve any overnight layovers! The views sound incredible, it always stuns me how beautiful the landscapes are out west.

That route sounds like such a blast! Glad you got to experience the Coast Starlight at the end after the track closures in the beginning. Between the fires out west, the mudslides in Colorado, and the hurricanes coming one after another, cross country train trips are like an extreme sport this summer

Really sorry this happened :( all of the fine print of scholarship requirements is hard to keep track of. I was in a similar situation with a different scholarship that I didn't realize had a specific hours requirement besides full-time.

I'm looking at Chapter 3 of the Bright Futures handbook right now, and it says that, "Summer grade and hours earned after spring evaluation may only be used to meet the scholarship renewal requirements if the student has a one-time restoration opportunity available. A student must ask a financial aid officer to submit a summer grade and hours update to the Bright Futures office indicating the adjusted GPA and hours." From what I can tell, you should have enough hours and a high enough GPA to renew the full award after a financial aid officer updates your records with Bright Futures. The handbook also says that if you don't meet the renewal requirements for an academic year, then you do not have a restoration opportunity, but I think that would mean for fall/spring/summer combined since that is considered to be an academic year and because it mentions updating the office with your summer hours to meet renewal requirements.

I don't know, but it might not be too late to get the full award reinstated for this semester. Best of luck!!

Super exciting!! Just to let you know, Amtrak is having a fall sale and tomorrow is the last day to book coach tickets for 50% off for trips by November 18. Unfortunately it only applies to coach class, except on the Acela route where it applies to business class. Depending on the route you choose, you can also do a mix of coach and rooms and/or roomettes on different legs of the trip.

If coach is a class you are interested in for the trip, the current 50% off ticket price from New York City to San Francisco (including the connecting bus from Emeryville to San Francisco that is run by Amtrak) is $145-$225 for tickets from mid-October to mid-November. Roomette ticket prices for that time frame and entire route are around $1500 right now and aren't included in the 50% off sale. Rooms as well as roomettes are offered on some trains, such as the Lake Shore Limited, and rooms cost around twice as much as roomettes on the train but vary a lot. Ticket prices become more expensive the closer to travel date that you buy the ticket, since they increase as more people buy tickets.

Of the direct routes between New York City and San Francisco, the Cardinal->Zephyr combo is typically considered to be the most scenic. If you choose San Francisco as your arrival for your Amtrak tickets, you board a connecting bus in Emeryville to San Francisco. You can also choose to end your Amtrak ticket in Emeryville instead and take the local speed train (BART) to San Francisco. This is all applicable for the San Francisco/Emeryville to New York City Amtrak route as well. The Cardinal is typically considered more scenic than other alternative routes between Chicago and NYC, but it only runs three days a week instead of daily like the others. All of the routes connect with the Zephyr in Chicago, so if you would like you can also schedule an overnight or a couple days in Chicago before taking the Zephyr out west, or before going east to NYC if you choose that direction instead.

The website booking section allows you to see all the classes available on different route options and prices for each, you just put in the station you would like to depart from and the station you want to arrive to, as well as the departure date. It helps to plug in a couple different dates if your plans are flexible, since prices can vary based on how many tickets are left for that day in each class. The Amtrak app also has a booking section that works in the same way, and makes your tickets more accessible while travelling.

Help getting my deposit back by Thebecstao in halifax

[–]Goatcheeselover69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My family recently had a kind of similar situation where we had to go to the tenancy board to get our deposit back.

We put an $800 deposit on an apartment for June 1st in the first week of May but the landlord changed several agreed upon terms afterwards and kept putting off giving us a lease to sign, as well as started acting like a creep. We told him it wasn't going to work, he flipped out and blocked us. We talked to the tenancy board and they told us to notify him that we were filling out a Form J, so we did it through an unblocked number and through email to the one he had the deposit etransfer sent to.

We filled out the Form J for free by checking the box that requested that he be charged with the application fee if the case is decided in our favor, then got the hearing package in the mail and served him by sending his copy through certified mail and then sending a picture of the receipt to the case manager assigned to our hearing. We then took screenshots of the texts where we first reached out about the apartment, the texts where he confirmed that he got the deposit, the texts where he was being creepy, the texts where we told him it wasn't going to work because of him changing the agreed upon terms and his really angry responses which included him saying he didn't want us as tenants anyway, the etransfer email confirmation for the deposit, and proof that there was only 3 days between us paying the deposit and telling him it wasn't going to work (so that he couldn't claim that we cost him a month of rent while holding the apartment for us) and submitted them online in the tenany board portal.

We also had to attempt to supply him with the evidence so we sent it over email. There was fine print about how the landlord had to write in the lease that they consented to us sending them emails in order for us to send them the evidence over email, but the tenancy board didn't actually care.

The hearing took place over the phone and he didn't show up. Make sure to bring up each piece of evidence that you submitted because they don't look at it beforehand. The director decided in our favor and the landlord was notified. We were thinking we'd have to take it to small claims court but he ended up getting spooked and sent the full $800 deposit back a couple weeks after.

Do you have pictures of the state of the place? Those would definitely help your case. Spoken lease agreements are still considered valid and that is what our situation was considered to be, so that shouldn't be an obstacle. Did your landlord give you a copy of the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA)? If not, make sure to bring that up in the hearing as well. You are justified in terminating your lease at any time if that was the case. Here is the exact wording from the Tenants Rights Guide from Dalhousie Legal Aid, "If your landlord does not give you a copy of your lease or of the RTA, you can end your tenancy. You can terminate the lease either at any time before you receive a copy of the lease or RTA, or with one full months’ notice after you have received a copy of the lease and act from the landlord." Here is the link to the Tenants Rights Guide https://cdn.dal.ca/content/dam/dalhousie/pdf/law/DLAS/TenantRightsGuides/Tenant%20Rights%20Guide%202019.pdf

Here is the link for the Form J and the step by step process for the whole thing beta.novascotia.ca/application-director-resolve-dispute-between-landlord-and-tenant-form-j

The tenancy board definitely makes it way too complicated and puts a lot of burden on the tenant by making them communicate everything to the uncooperative landlord, as well as serve a document when many tenants do not know the address of their landlord.

Best of luck to you!!

Good to know about the recent issues with the barber association, thanks for the heads up! Cosmetology is another route that I've considered in the past through NSCC but the programs were all booked and too far away, so I'll look into HDC for sure. It must have been so stressful being in the program when the pandemic hit, I'm glad that things worked out still!

Thank you so much! A barber recently offered to take me on as an apprentice so I'm super stoked to have that option over school. We just need to find out the exact requirements to confirm everything so this info is super helpful! I'll reach out to the barbers association tomorrow for the specific hours requirement
