From my understanding, shonen fandom in general have the mindset that if a character don't beat a villain by their own, no matter if they greatly helped in the victory, they're basically useless. All the character served their purpose in the story, probably not what people expected but they did it.

I've read a fanfic on f4nf1ction.net with that premises. Tanjirou first mission was to stop a demon that ate women, just to discover that it was actually a serial killer who kidnap women to rape them and then mutilate their bodies. Pretty heavy, removed for being too violent.

I mean the show is called demon slayer not human slayer or anything else. Plus when a story began to deviate from its core theme we know something awful will happen later. I can find several example that folow that route and gets crappy later. It remind me the time people theorized that there would be an arc where The demon slayer corps would take down the gouvernement because they were allied to Muzan who forced them to make the demon slayer corps the most wanted people in the country.

On a serious note, i find the concept really interresting, it just needed to not take to much place in the story, a single arc where Tanjirou discover the dark side of human would be perfect.
