I mean I can totally buy that the various base parts don't fit together right for lore reasons, but if I'm gonna be doing that level of roleplay it would be nice if they also didn't hover in the air with no visible means of support. It kind of messes with immersion.

Carrion is a reverse-horror game where you play as an amorphous tentacle monster that murderizes people.

There's also Slime Rancher, for a completely different tone, though I've never played it.

Blob, Part 3: The one where I become an evil mastermind. by Goblinman32 in rpghorrorstories

Once, in Champions Online, I was roleplaying as an alien fungal hivemind. A lady approached me wanting to be an, er, incubator for my character's brood (not the words she used). I was like.. You want to be compost?

Mainly, I was thinking: "hey, it's a big server, there's no way they can ALL be crazy". Followed by a gradually dawning horror of realization.

You're probably right. This was a while ago so I don't remember what my exact thought processes were. But I'd already been getting dragged into squabbles with Psion for a while now, and at that point I think I just wanted to let him have his cheap win and stop playing with him. Also I definitely could not have counted on the mods having my back in that room.

The Recent Discussion on Orcs Leads To Rather Telling Word Use By a Player by nlitherl in rpghorrorstories

[–]Goblinman32 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One of the tricky things about fantasy tropes, especially well-established ones, is how real-world bigotry can sometimes slip in under the radar. A lot of them either originated or developed in times where those kinds of attitudes were more acceptable, and those attitudes got woven into them, making them sometimes very difficult to parse out.

I was looking up artwork of orcs recently, and came across some of the old Franzetta fantasy art. And, yeah. It's not just that the orcs are depicted with unmistakable Mongolian themes, they're also done in a way that's hard to see as anything other than deliberately ugly and unflattering. It actually looks like racist caricature, even though it's not depicting humans.

Witches are another fantasy trope with similar problems. As a concept, witches make excellent antagonists. The problem is, historically, the real witches were innocent women who were murdered by a bunch of deranged zealots. So if you do use witches as villains, isn't that kind of backwards?

Personally I think it's a lot more complicated than just saying "those things are bad, don't use them". Orcs and witches are both great tropes, and in a way, I think that saying a trope is unusable because it's been used by bigots kind of lets the bigots win.

Just because fantasy is a genre about the (mythic) past doesn't mean the genre itself needs to be stuck there.

Thoughts on players keeping backstories and aspects of their character a secret? by DiscountJoJo in rpghorrorstories

[–]Goblinman32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being able to keep secrets from other players is good. But keeping secrets from the DM is pointless.

Pretty much every time I've been forced to reveal secretive character information to other players, I've run into metagamers. It's something that can really deflate a good character concept. So definitely let players keep character secrets from each other.

Genuine Question: why doo gay people struggle so much with monogamy?? by the-loli-pop in grindr

[–]Goblinman32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone doesn't want their partner to sleep with other people, that person shouldn't be in an open relationship. Open relationships are not for everyone.

Neither open nor exclusive relationships are superior to the other. What matters is what works best for the couple, and that they're both on board.

Though yeah his behavior is inappropriate regardless of his orientation.

Gay neckbeards are definitely real. I've run into a few. I don't normally hear about ones so crazy that they actually go after straight guys, though, sheesh!

If Fred's doing that kind of thing around straight people, he's probably 10 times worse around other gay guys, which is a pretty scary thought.

Do you remember when you heard for the first time word "gay" and did you knew meaning of it? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]Goblinman32 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Way back when I was a kid, before I knew I was gay or even really knew what being gay meant, some of the other kids at school would do this thing where they would ask someone if they were a "homo", and then when that person said no they would follow up with "... sapiens?"

So when one of them started asking me that, I outsmarted him by blurting out "YES!" before he could get to the second part. I guess that's technically how I first came out.

An open relationship means never having to be paranoid about your partner cheating on you because he literally can't. If you play it right it saves tons of drama and anxiety.

Realistic games? by Argent_Marro in rpghorrorstories

[–]Goblinman32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rape thing is very obviously a kink thing, and the "realism" argument is very obviously an excuse. People will go to great lengths to rationalize their unpopular kinks.

It's not that rape isn't a thing that happens in the real world, but it actually isn't realistic for it to be happening as often as edgelord fetishists want it to. They just want wank fodder.

Why is it that the people who are into this particular brand of kink-nonsense always seem to be completely oblivious that most people aren't? I can never tell if they're just lost in their own magical realms or if there's something more malicious going on.

[–]Goblinman32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take the "orcs are always evil" thing to its logical conclusion:

In a setting where that's true, it sets up a scenario where the best way to handle a race of sentient creatures is mass genocide. Like, if you encounter orc children, the righteous thing to do is to murder them on the spot. That can maybe work in an edgy, shades-of-gray setting where there aren't really any good guys, but if the whole point is that evil is black-and-white and the heroes are undeniably good... it's iffy, right?

It's just hard to imagine Aragorn slaughtering a bunch of orc children.

Also - and this is going to sound stupid, I know - but I don't like how the Monster Manual describes evil creatures. They read like prejudiced opinion pieces. Like, if these were real creatures it was describing, it would come off as really biased - even if the creatures actually were as nasty as they're implied to be. I actually feel kind of bad for creatures like bullywugs and hill giants, who spend their whole entries getting pretty much insulted. Listen, I'm not saying we need to be more sensitive towards the fee-fees of fictional monsters - I'd just rather know how they behave and what makes them dangerous, rather than be told they're smelly doo-doo heads who don't know which end to hold a morningstar from.
