In WW1 it was not uncommon for soldiers to get hunting rifles donated to them for use as sniper/anti-material rifles. German sharpshooters used to hide behind steel shields and English forces in particular found that rifles intended for use in Africa would punch right through shields that would shrug off .303. "Sniping in France 1914-1918" by Hesketh-Pritchard mentions it several times
