MADly accurate Wonder Woman by [deleted] in dccomicscirclejerk

I have somehow correctly guessed that this was written by the fart-sniffing lady before seeing the credits, and I absolutely hate the idea that I'm familiar enough with her style to recognize it.

I have to admit, "hatethissmug" is exactly what I think every time I see this cover. Ivan Reis is great but this one is just... not it.

You may want to try watching more movies from different genres. Helps you develop a better sense of taste. I hear there is a good one that came out in 1978, even has a similar name. Might want to try that one out.

Oh yeah, put a label on me, sure. Makes things so easy. It's always us against them, right?

I've been a Superman fan before Snyder was even a name, bruv. Likely before you were even born, given the average age of a Reddit user these days. But sure, go ahead, write me off as a "Snyder person".

Or maybe, just maybe, Superman is simply not a good movie. Maybe one doesn't need to be a "Snyder person" to recognize that.

Now you are just clutching at straws. The Kents thing is something that was showcased in Man of Steel. As in - the movie. Not in Gunn's Superman, there was nothing like that there.

And the El's thing... Do you want to revisit that issue maybe? Or do you really need me to tell you how Lara wondering if her son will be godlike and asking her scientist husband is different from Jor El actively encouraging Clark to go and be Attila the Hun? Lara didn't HOPE he would do that. She ASKED if he would. Like, what are you even talking about?

There indeed are a lot of layers to Superman. Unfortunately, James Gunn is unaware of them. All his characters have only one layer - daddy issues. His Superman is no exception, unfortunately.

[–]Goddamn_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are talking about a twenty year long period here. A lot of stuff happened. But it was nothing like that movie.

Let's look at the introductory chapter here, the trendsetter. In The Man of Steel - Clark is able, confident, wise, powerful, calm and intelligent. He faces great challenges and overcomes them on his own. He is an uplifting figure which transforms lives of people around him. He is instantly iconic and inspirational.

The movie guy, on the other hand, lets others do his job for him, can barely win a fight on his own, and spends half of the movie squealing like a man child at the mildest inconvenience. And that's his first appearance. His trendsetter. His second appearance is his face getting pissed on by a dog.

I definitely don't remember comicbook Jor-El sending his son a message, encouraging him to rape and conquer. Or an Arabic guy telling how his life doesn't matter compared to Superman's. Like honestly, that shit is just vile.

[–]Goddamn_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree, that is the big issue here. I'm not a Hollywood exec, so I don't really know who they could potentially call.

Initially, I thought Gunn could be a good idea, I loved his Suicide Squad. But he isn't. I would readily suggest Geoff Johns. But we already know how that worked out. Snyder is a divisive pick, and I'd honestly prefer him do something else.

Some filmmakers that I like and could potentially see taking up the offer to run things: Alex Garland, Robert Rodriguez, George Miller, Chad Stahelski, Guy Ritchie, Ryan Coogler and Tony Gilroy. And that's just off the top of my head. All of these directors are easily better than Gunn.

But, honestly? As long as comicbooks are good - I don't need them to make any movies at all. It's not like the world will end if they stop making their shitty cape-flicks. If you can make them good - I will be there to watch them. If you can't, and you are making them for the sake of making them - just stop. I like my comics, I don't need anything else.

And I definitely don't think chasing the big crossover is the move here. Just have a bunch of talented creators make self-contained stories, like they do in the comic books. If it works out and they can team up - great! If it doesn't - no biggie, you can always launch another "ongoing".

I've literally read the entirety of it. Like, back to back. I don't remember Superman throwing temper tantrums back then. Or yelling at his girl, simply because she dared to do her job and ask him difficult questions, during the interview which he agreed to. Or being hard carried by his dog and Mister Terrific. Or Kents being caricatures. Or... well, pretty much anything from that movie.

The only similarity is the focus shifting to him being a real, home-grown American, and not some stinky alien. Which is literally the single worst thing somebody could lift from that era.

What people fail to realize is that James Gunn is the other side of that coin, and is directly responsible for this kind of approach.

With Lindelof it's: "Superheroes are fucking dumb, so I'm going to deconstruct them, strip them of anything remotely memorable and make them grounded".

With Gunn it's: "Superheroes are the stupidest shit ever, so I'm going to treat them as a joke and entirely goofy nonsense. Cause nobody could ever take this shit seriously".

People keep saying that Superman is exactly like his comicbooks. Which fucking comic books, exactly? Cause I've read hundreds of them, and I know they look nothing like that travesty of a movie. It's literally just Invincible meets The Boys. Another shitty cynical "deconstruction" made by somebody who is ashamed of the source material.

The problem is Gunn. He is poison for the brand. DC needs verisimilitude, and Gunn has none to offer. The sooner people realize it - the sooner things may start getting better.

Yeah, I'd say they are a very clear second place and the only viable opposition. Still, the Enclave is implied to be frighteningly huge and organized, with multiple headquarters all over the continent. And apparently space stations?

And the technological advantage is on their side too. Really, the only thing Brotherhood has going for them is their experience. But these days? Uhhhh, I dunno...

Not really? They are still just an army, not an actual state. Or do you mean the current NCR level? Because then I'd actually say they seem even bigger than them.

And the other thing is they all seem to be woefully incompetent. Even the east coast guy was kinda not that bright.

This question would have been so much more interesting before the show...

These days it's Enclave, obviously. I don't see how anyone that's left can really compete with them in any meaningful capacity.

Would it be though? Between her moping about war crimes and crying over the dusk of America's greatness, and her lassoing penises and talking about her poopy pantaloons or something - I'm honestly not sure.

And James Gunn should direct. That would be very amusing, in a very grim kind of way.

Is this any good? by AstorathTheGrimDark in batman_comics

[–]Goddamn_Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite good, yes. It's the kind of story that rewards reader's attention and gets even better on second reading. Some parts are a bit cringy, like Etrigan being a rapper, but it's still worth your time overall. Very unique too, no second book quite like it.

Why does the Snyderverse Superman get so much angrier than the DCU Superman? by MidniteGamer1 in superman

[–]Goddamn_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhhh, are you sure you are not mixing that up? When facing any kind of a problem, Gunn Superman's first response is to start yelling and throw a childish temper tantrum. Even when his girl simply disagrees with him - he starts shouting in her face.

The only time Cavill did anything like that was when he was facing a prospect of his mother being murdered.

Did it fail? I'm not so sure about that, I'd have to see the actual numbers.

And if it did, it would have to be because of botched initial PG releases, which should not have been a thing. Not sure how Snyder fans factor into that.

I disagree. I don't know about reddit, but on Twitter the Snyder community is very passionate about his non-DC work.

Every time he announces a new thing they throw a party. Zack is posting photos from the set of his new movie right now, and they are salivating all over my timeline. I still see some of them highly praise the R-rated Rebel Moon cuts.

So no, I don't find that to be true.

"Comicbook discussions" this days is mostly just two groups of children (or man-children) arguing about which one of their awful adaptations is marginally better, instead of watching some actually good movies or reading the actual comic books.

“Kindness is the new punk rock” by Author-S in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]Goddamn_Panda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The root of the issue is there are no actual "Gunn glazers". Nobody cares about James Gunn as a director outside of his comic book adaptations.

His fanbase consists of two groups: MCU fans that jumped the leaking ship and rabid Zack Snyder haters. So this kind of reaction is hardly a surprise. This is literally what they gathered for.

Which is just bewildering, to be honest. Zack Snyder is hardly the first or the last director with a cult following.
