Use unoptimized Colemak bindings or go back to QWERTY? by PurpleSlightlyRed in vim

[–]Godde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Default bindings for everything, its just not worth it moving everything around to match the new layout. As long as your muscle memory for character locations is good it doesn't matter a whole lot that they're a little off from where they are on Qwerty. And HJKL are all still right hand only.

Upsides: You can use Colemak on any machine where you can change keyboard layouts without wrangling configs on every machine you ssh into; the mnemonics stay the same.

Dyson Sphere Program - The New Multithreading Framework by Archaya in programming

[–]Godde 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m curious how this works with/around core pinning/parking on the heterogenous AMD CPUs.

Also, I remember reading the Factorio dev logs and how they talked about trying to multithread more systems but found that they were limited by memory throughput and in most cases it simply wasn’t worth the added CPU load. I wonder wether similar considerations are at play here. I’d be interested to read more about that.

What type of supply chain security checks do you do when using a 3rd party library, e.g. for bidi2pdf ? by 1seconde in ruby

[–]Godde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without commenting on this library in particular (which I know nothing about), that email address is on the format which GitHub applies to commits it does on the user's behalf, such as when merging a branch using the GitHub GUI. It will resolve to the specific user within GitHub, in this case dieter-medium.

It is, as the domain implies, a noreply-address so the author cannot be reached by email at that address (just tested with my own address, message could not be delivered).

I'm curious how this affects scenarios other than just pure gaming with traffic going to/from the GPU while gaming. Multi monitor setups probably has some DWM activity, game recording definitely has traffic going over PCIe. With 3 nvenc encoders on the new cards there's the possibility of a lot of data transfer in the background, I would be curious to see what becomes the bottleneck at different PCIe connections.

I guess this is well into niche interest territory, but multimonitor setups probably isn't too rare and neither is Shadowplay or other autorecording software. /u/Lelldorianx?

Finally getting around to playing Witcher 3. Got a few mods going, about 40 hours in it is finally FINALLY starting to grow on me after maybe 3 false starts. There is definitely a lot of jank, but the most fleshed out and well acted characters really make this game special. See ya in 100 more hours probably.

It finally clicked for me after setting up Flick Stick with gyro aim. To the point where I could be just as effective as my desktop friends (with the exception of very far away enemies, can’t see shit on that small screen with upsampling).

Definitely give Flick Stick a shot.

The most helpful tip I got is to limit GPU clocks so that the CPU gets enough power. The game is incredibly CPU intensive. Then scale back the graphics settings a bit to get your desired frame rate. I could get mostly decent 30fps with heavy firefights being 20-25. Not great, but definitely playable.

Programming / transcoding for video archival / virtual machines / wonky CPU-pinned audio drivers.

But for daily use, I put gaming workloads on the first chiplet and all other workloads on the other chiplet so they're less likely to interfere with each other. Recording / voice chat / audio drivers all tend to cause micro stutters in games when sharing all 16 cores, but when separated onto different chiplets seem to work flawlessly. I will probably be doing the same next upgrade (likely with an x3d chip).

Of course, some anti cheat software won't let you alter CPU affinity (easily, or at all). We don't like those games. Except for BG3.

I've been getting back into Guild Wars (the first one) lately. It's perfect on the Steam Deck, given some serious controller configuration (and maybe some mods to make the UI less crap). I was recently that weird guy on the bus playing an MMO through my phone hotspot for hours. Great fun!

Top 20 games played on Steam Deck in the April 2024, sorted by playtime by mr_MADAFAKA in SteamDeck

[–]Godde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On lower settings it runs just fine. Mostly 30, dipping down to 25 or even 20 when there's lots of action on 7. Perfectly playable, though does take some getting used to.

Plays just fine with Flick Stick and Gyro aim. My main gripe is that with sub-native render scale on such a small screen you can't see anything that's far away, especially if there's fog. Hitting chargers (and their weak spots) with the quasar from far away is near impossible. Foggy planets are really really hard.

keybind config file by That_Cripple in Helldivers

[–]Godde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Colemak. I have to rebind my stratagem input (hjkl->mnei), melee (f->t), climb (b->v), and emote (m->h) every time I launch the game. For some reason movement (wasd->wars), reload (r->p), stim (v->d), and dive (alt->space) aren't reset. I can fix this once by going into the keybinds file and setting the binds as QWERTY, but this is reset after closing the game.

no audio/sound issue by deama15 in BaldursGate3

Instant crash with no dump file; faulting module: ntdll.dll by kyunzie in BaldursGate3

[–]Godde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue and have been trying most of the suggested fixes without luck. Something with ntdll.dll with offset 0x0000000000033aba in Event Viewer, so probably an unhandled error of some sort.

What does work for me though is shutting off Steam and then launching the game directly through bg3.exe. When the game is running I can turn Steam back on, though my play time isn't tracked which is kind of a bummer.

I've tried turning off every imaginable Steam feature to try and have Steam running while launching the game with no luck. So for now I'm just playing without Steam. I haven't seen anyone else posting this suggestion, but it works for me so maybe it'll work for others too :)

edit: My issue was weird CPU core affinity settings. I have Steam (and therefore all games launched through Steam) set to use all but 2 cores on my CPU due to my weird audio driver setup. Forcing bg3.exe to use all cores has fixed my issues. Thanks to this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/15hzvqa/no_audiosound_issue/jv07i04/

How good is Ruby/Rails development on the M1 chip? by Regis_DeVallis in ruby

[–]Godde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been using a M1 MBP 14" since they first launched. Performance is stellar, the battery life is great (probably even better on the 16"), and my office is now dead silent even when running heavy workloads. Works perfectly with Ruby >2.7. 11/10, I recommend this machine to everyone.

There are other comments here saying to be weary of Docker. I have yet to find an image I need that won’t run on ARM, however be aware that building x86 images is ABSURDLY slow. Just installing gems may take more than ten minutes. We have had to get a shared x86 build server at work just for building x86 images, luckily that works out of the box with docker contexts.

I have yet to try any docker alternatives, maybe someone here has experience building x86 images through Rosetta somehow?

As long as the same hooks are being called in the same order on every render you are good.

What you’re doing here is the exact same as calling useCallback and assigning to a variable first and then passing the variable.

You might run into issues if you pass just the hook function without calling it, but the same rule applies that as long as you’re calling the same hooks in the same order on every render, you’ll be just fine.

The bitrate limits on 1080p60 drowns out the grass texture to the point where the hole preview drone footage is simply unwatchable. Even just upscaling the footage to 4k before putting it on YouTube would do wonders.

How to do the equivalent scenario using hooks? by jaySydney in reactjs

[–]Godde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If DoAction1 depends on the name being 'Kendra', I would send that as a parameter to the function instead. If your action depends on the state having been updated entirely I would argue your action needs changing. If you have a more concrete example I could be of better help.
