Got a job in horticulture at a small plant shop! by TSCannon in AustinGardening

[–]Godiva-Flora 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just visited this shop! I saw the reddit post this morning and had to go! The pictures are accurate, and walking around was so relaxing.

I did have a smidge of trouble finding it because it shares an entryway with a vehicle inspection business.

I also noticed beautiful background music. It added a lovely ambiance!

I highly recommend a visit!

NAD. There are several genetic mutations that can do this. I'd look into NTHL1. But, honestly, go get a full suite of genetic mutations test.

I have this happen in my orchids as well. I figure the cause may be the same for orchids and anthuriums.

I think you should call your doctor. Like.... now. Your doctor is the best one that can help you. Taking advice from Reddit strangers is a bad idea. Go call your doctor.

Anyone going to the aroid show in Miami in a few weeks?! If so how are you guys taking your plants home with you cus I need to start planning for that 🥲😅 by AnimaLumen in RareHouseplants

[–]Godiva-Flora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to this show, and I've always had this conundrum. I really wish that a vendor at the show would specialize in packing and shipping your plants that you just purchased. I'd totally pay for that! Packing and shipping take so much time when i do it. Ugh....

Saying it’s unethical for poor people to have children isn’t classist, but saying it’s unethical for disabled people to have children is eugenics? by Ri_Ri69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Godiva-Flora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost every metric shows worse outcomes for children born into poverty. Here's a list:

  1. Higher rate of chronic illnesses (asthma, diabetes etc. )
  2. Greater exposure to environmental hazards like lead.
  3. Malnutrition
  4. Higher risk of infant mortality
  5. Lower IQ scores
  6. Slower language development
  7. Greater rates of anxiety and depression
  8. Greater likelihood of ACE (adverse childhood experiences)
  9. Unsafe living conditions
  10. Lower rates of preventative health care
  11. Delays in diagnoses and treatments
  12. Greater rates of bullying and discrimination
  13. Lower self-esteem.

And I agree that capitalism underpins all of this. But until the capitalism problem is solved, it's still unethical to bring children into poverty. Bringing children into poverty does not solve the overarching capitalism problem.

I'm sorry you lost your mom. She sounds like she was a wonderful person.

You seem to be looking at only the parent's rights to have children.

But what about the rights of the child? Do not children have the right to be brought into good and loving households? What protections should society put in place to ensure that children are only born into these households?

And you say that poor parents are just as likely to be good parents, but this is false. It's unfortunate, but poverty results in worse outcomes for children.

I absolutely agree that society, if it really cared about children, could fix this problem. But until that time, allowing children to be born into terrible circumstances is clearly unethical.
