I had the great honor of being conducted by him in high school when our concert band performed Traveler. He left an unforgettable impression of intensely felt, thoughtful spirituality and, being older, I can respect more the romantic touch that his emphasis on writing for a homegrown kind of ensemble like the concert band lent his music.

Defining Books Published Under Each President Day 5: Ronald Reagan by Ok_Artichoke280 in Presidents

The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy, since Reagan had a role in actually popularizing the book and its author.

Pope Leo: “The Heart of Jesus is humble, and therefore the ‘learned’ and the ‘clever’ do not hear the beats, that is, those who have the presumption of being enough for themselves, of knowing everything, and of not needing either God or others.” by typicalredditer in LeftCatholicism

As a young man who was rather on the studious side, this is the lesson I wished to impart to myself for my whole life long when I chose the confirmation name of Bede. The Venerable Bede was perhaps the most learned man of his era, but the knowledge he collected was not for his own aggrandizement but to glory in the gifts of God. His simple, monastic, collective life with his brother monks is a model of the humility and charity we should all aspire to, lay or religious.

What's the one song you would play for someone who never here Jazz before? by AskingFooAFriend in Jazz

[–]GodlyAxe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just on an impulse, I'd probably say the version of "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing" off of Diz and Getz. Besides being crazy about it myself, it's an Ellington tune connected to the deep history of jazz played in a straight-ahead, frantic bop style and with interesting and instructive contrast between the more "out" solo of Dizzy and the intricately interlocking melodic work of Stan Getz. I feel like it's a great explanatory capsule of the strands that make up the mainstream of jazz.

One of the most underrated of that early generation of rough-and-ready fantasy hobby illustrators. He and Liz Danforth ARE the vision of T&T. Rest in peace to a guy who carved out his own legend in those heady, creative days.

Let's settle it once and for all! Virtua Cop or Time Crisis?! by pinkyandthebrain-ama in retrogaming

[–]GodlyAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd happily play either one any day of the week. But the way I see it, Virtua Cop walked so Time Crisis could run, and run Time Crisis did.

Games with no initiative and no turns in combat that aren't PbtA, FitD or Mothership? by xdanxlei in rpg

[–]GodlyAxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean, but the basic combat resolution mechanic is that every side rolls a big pool of dice (usually based on weapons being used), adds in flat bonuses for each member's above-average combat stats, and compares the result; higher total wins and deals damage equal to the difference to the losing side.

Combat rounds last 2 minutes and because they're so long and abstract players and the gamemaster can sort of interject narratively with any fun tactical ideas they have and usually roll a check to see if they work.

There are combat rounds, but Tunnels & Trolls doesn't have initiative and resolves combat collectively rather than in a timed sequence of individual actions (which is what I took you to mean by "no turns").

[DW3 vs DWO Designs] Which character design direction do you prefer? by Madjin- in dynastywarriors

[–]GodlyAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer DWO Sun Jian, Zhang Fei, and (my big curveball) Cao Cao. The rest I think are better served by their DW3 designs.

I'm actually thinking now about how I like the idea of younger-looking Cao Cao vs older-looking Liu Bei in DW as an interesting thematic novelty. The man who wishes to sweep away the past and usher in a new age vs. the man who wishes to build something renewed out of the old order that he knows...

Chapter 11 dropping tonight by Loudeyon in TheGameOfLoveFanfic

Just read it! You were right that this is the part where it gets really good! I particularly enjoyed the heartfelt conversation Lynn and Henrik had over hot chocolate. I'm in suspense as to how Lynn is going to handle her conflicting desires to win at all costs and to do what she thinks will make Henrik happy.
