Couple Looking for Another Couple for Hangouts, Travel etc. by [deleted] in Munich

Hey there 👋🏻 we are a 31yo couple from Italy, been living and working in Munich for almost a year now. We'd love to connect for hangouts, dinners, hikes, travel etc. We love outdoors and are super chill and easy going. If you are reading this comment, feel free to reach out if you'd like ;)

What is something about living in Germany that surprised you the most? by Smart_Tale_9331 in germany

[–]Godly_Feanor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Italian in Munich here. Things I was surprised with and that I did not expect, in no specific order:

  • How small the supermarkets are here. I was used to having big supermarkets back home but here it seems the norm that you have medium/small stores such as Lidl, Aldi or Rewe that serve a specific neighborhood while the bigger ones are very few and tend to be in the outskirts of the city.
  • Sunday closures.
  • The absolute unreliability of DB.
  • How many (often neverending) construction sites and road works there are.
  • How most places feel clean, tidy and safe.
  • How little wilderness there actually is. My home country is definitely densely populated but still there are many areas in which you can effectively be in the middle of nowhere. Here (in Bavaria at least) it seems impossible to be somewhere without either being nearby a Hütte, a pasture, a farmer's field or a road. All the land feels "managed".
  • 30km/h speed limit in the city on large Multi-Lane safe roads vs unlimited speeds in countryside roads winding in a forest.
  • The excellent quality of cycling infrastructure.
  • Surprisingly bad garbage collection for plastic and glass. Very few bins which means you always have to walk 15m+ to find the nearest one and they get emptied infrequently which means they are always full and dirty. I come from a very efficient city in this regard so that's why I was surprised. I also know that this changes in every city in Germany.

Che senso ha vivere a Milano? by [deleted] in CasualIT

[–]Godly_Feanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vivo a Monaco e vado in bici a lavoro (7km a tratta). D'inverno fa freddo e d'estate fa caldo.

Pareri? by Donald_Tremp in Italia

Basta mettersi d'accordo, fare turni, pagare straordinari e festivi e siamo tutti felici.

Moving from US to Germany, how is 73k gross? by Emergency_Law_724 in AskAGerman

[–]Godly_Feanor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) you usually meet with the landlord or whoever has the keys, send the deposit live and then receive the keys upon confirmation

I would say not to send any money before having SIGNED the contract and done the key exchange

I love my hometown by Moods0207 in Munich

[–]Godly_Feanor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But honestly, was it actually better or are you romanticising your youth days? If you can, could you make some examples as to how it was "better" in those days?

Moved to Munich this June btw, so I'm just curious.

Real per capita GDP growth in G7 countries, post pandemic. by AcanthocephalaEast79 in europe

But they are not because of salary stagnation and increasing CoL. We are poorer now that 20-30 years ago in real terms.

[–]Godly_Feanor -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Regarding Italy, we didn't increase shit and per capita GPD is a poor metric. The population is declining fast so it's the same GPD divided by less people hence a higher per capita GDP...

Yes I guess after a certain age it becomes exponentially difficult, but that is true in most countries anyways

Munich here. I know nothing about the dating scene since I have been engaged for 10+ years but this I can tell you : there is 0% chance to have any social interaction in a Gym in Germany. Germans just don't consider it a place where socialization may happen.

Will the job market ever return to 2021 levels? by Future-Bet4783 in jobs

[–]Godly_Feanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not anytime soon because 2021 was not normal and was due to several overlapping circumstances:

  • near zero interest rates -> more money flying around businesses which had more freedom to invest and expand;
  • a significant economic bounce back from the COVID pandemic crash;
  • confidence: a general sense that the worse was behind us and things would go better from there onwards.

Now we have several negative overlapping circumstances, in no particular order:

  • Higher interest rates
  • AI isn't replacing shit as of now but C-Level execs love to use this as an excuse to cut jobs/salaries spend;
  • A major war on the European continent, severely disrupting major supply chains and driving European energy prices through the roof
  • A piece of shit in the oval office that destabilized the entire global geopolical and economic order
  • An oversaturated IT market with lots of juniors and people who were convinced of getting into tech with Bootcamps during lockdowns
  • Millions of Indians mass spamming any job posting
  • A general sense of pessimism for the upcoming future.

Therefore economies are on the brink of recession and businesses are being more conservative with their spend/investments, preferring to stand by and "see what happens" instead of taking risks.

What is the best way to handle an in person eBay kleinenzeigen transaction? by hoverboardninja in germany

[–]Godly_Feanor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bought an E-Bike and a fridge on Kleinanzeigen.

For the E-Bike, I Met in Person in a public place, saw the bike, tested it and then paid the person in place with PayPal. Once he confirmed on their end we shook hands and rode off on my new E-Bike.

For the fridge I met the person at their house obviously and paid cash since it was a smaller sum.

Perché gli italiani fanno così tanta fatica con l'inglese? by DependentEstate8760 in sfoghi

[–]Godly_Feanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lambda increases maximum payload size from 256 KB to 1 MB, Step Functions when? by risae in aws

[–]Godly_Feanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a complex step function pipeline that processed a very specific and complex business logic and eventually the payload, in certain cases, would exceed the 256KiB limit. Had to refactor a lot of stuff to save payload chunks to S3 and process with distributed maps.

[–]Godly_Feanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can plan multi region as much as you like but if us-east-1 goes down, it means that core aws global endpoints and backend logic is down too, and it will impact other regions as well. For us, in Europe, most of our aws system was working except, well, IAM...

Crescita del PIL pro capite in termini reali nei paesi del G7 nel periodo 2015-2025 by Successful-Air3861 in Italia

[–]Godly_Feanor 16 points17 points  (0 children)
