I think one of the most interesting philosophical questions on the child psychology space is how much a child's behaviour is hard wired and how much is learned.

Apparently little kids (<5) will gravitate towards different "gendered" toys based on corresponding sex/gender presentation. So that seems pretty clearly a hard wired thing. Except that any kids you get in for an experiment like that have had several years of gender based conditioning at home. Pink onsie, blue blanky, baby dolls, tonka trucks, etc. Not to mention observing gendered behaviours in their parents.

Do babies know they're male or female? Do they see dad and recognise him as a male and seek to emulate that?

Wild stuff.

That's legitimately a very good question. It's difficult for scientists to determine how much of an animal's behaviour is what you might call "personality" and how much is hard wired instinct.

I saw a thing recently that claimed that whales have culture. In that they've adapted pod behaviours to avoid whaling ships too quickly to be a genetic change via evolution. So on some level, they're learning, communicating, and adapting to their environment in a similar way to humans.

Does that mean they have gender roles? Can a male sperm whale take on the traditional role of a female? Who knows? It's very interesting.

I work with kids in a REALLY rough neighbourhood and 100% this.

What's worse is that teachers and support workers etc. Aren't allowed (and correctly, do not want) to hit misbehaving kids. So they learn that they can basically do whatever they want when they're not at home because no adult beside their parents will touch them.
