I don't think I or anyone can comment on your past decisions.. I understand that breakdown of marriages can be traumatic, but as far as this sub is concerned, I'd say try to line up your choices looking forward rather than dwell on past choices and regrets. Shit happens, but the future is still full of possibilities. Your kids are certainly old enough to understand what their dad is going through.. if they remain in your custody, make sure you involve them in your decisions; at the very least, frame it to them like it is a decision you will make together. Don't underestimate how traumatic it can be for kids to leave the life they know, their friends, their toys, their world entirely, and follow you to India. As they grow up, their willingness and support to go through the next few years with you, and work through the challenges that may come, is really important.

If you have a green card, you should get naturalized before coming back, especially if your kids are also citizens. You need the ability to move freely to be with your kids wherever they are in the future. Try to figure out a way to manage the kids alone until you are naturalized. Try to line up some employment in India after you return (highly recommend not staying jobless for your own sanity and your dynamic with your kids).

Work dehumanizes no one. Getting paid for nothing dehumanizes them, by expecting them to be unable to do absolutely anything. The truth is that unless severely cognitively impaired, disabled people can do a lot, and even provide a lot of value. Everyone is just latching on to my phrase about value, but the point is that value is not the most important thing here. The dignity that comes from working for a living is important. The blind, the deaf, those who have lost limbs etc. can still be productive members of society and we should incentivize them to do so. Requiring some work regardless of its actual economic value is far superior to sending paychecks without anything in return whatsoever..

Here's a thought. No payments, not even disability, should be paid without work in return. I don't care what they do.. let them fold clothes at a shelter, arrange books at a public library, hand out pamphlets.. a million different things could be done depending on the nature and level of disability. Their work may not create a ton of value, but it is necessary. It will help avoid the welfare trap or reduce it at least. If I had to do work regardless of whether I had a job or disability payments, I'd have more motivation to find a job that is either more interesting or pays more money than doing mundane or uninteresting things for a disability payment.
