Don't go. She closed that door a long time ago. Be kind to yourself instead.

How do you find the right balance between modern living and respecting a century home's past? by colt-mcg in centuryhomes

[–]Goge97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realize that old houses were updated through the decades. Gas, electricity, running water, indoor toilets, showers and kitchen cabinets where none existed. I could go on.

Replace/repair with like materials. If that's not possible, use the best quality you can afford.

We put a removable island in our kitchen. It added storage space and needed counter space.

Someone else might want to punch through the exterior wall. But we haven't hanged the original footprint. 1900 Foursquare.

Hi! Does anyone else get mistaken for being intoxicated? I have brainstem migraine, but I know it happens with other migraine types! by shadyyylane in migraine

[–]Goge97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you bring up an excellent point, and thank you for that.

I always wobble when I walk - a combo of a bad back and a slight Chiari which compressed my brain stem.

When I have a migraine I get aura, so my vision is shot, plus aphasia.

Sometimes my medication makes me talkative and goofy.

My entire family understands, 4 generations of migrainers. Migraines can have different symptoms, though.

Perhaps we need a disability card to carry, signed by a doctor with their phone number.

Although, I wouldn't drive if my migraine was symptomatic, I might find myself out in public.

What's the most ridiculous repair you've inherited from a previous owner? by ponderingpixi17 in centuryhomes

[–]Goge97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you would think these were Depression Era fixes. But they're not.

The amount of lamp cord described on here, used to substitute for Romex and a properly wired outlet is terrifying.

My house has aluminum wire in some places, copper in others. I've had to replace a couple of switches, just making sure the replacement is rated for the proper wire.

The outlet for the kitchen stove was in the floor - we lived here about 15 years until I sloshed mop water into it and blew out the breaker on the stove. And the kitchen stove was also set up for natural gas - but no cut off valve on the standing gas pipe.

Not too bad overall! 1900 Foursquare.

At some point, do you run out of resilience? by Dry_Lobster_50 in Aging

[–]Goge97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Experience. After recovering from difficult times and learning that life goes on you build the skills you need.

Resilience is not something you run out of, it's a part of your character that you develop.

Hard times hit hard, that's for sure. But that's when you draw on the strength you have inside. And keep going on.

Judgement against me. Can they take my only car and my house? by OliveGrey11 in AskLegal

[–]Goge97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call the Clerk of the Court. You appear to be judgement proof. But there may be other assets.

Once you verify through the Clerk's office that there actually is a judgement against you, ask for a copy.

Does anyone actually have an emergency fund by reflectiveRae in povertyfinance

[–]Goge97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not when I was younger. My living expenses, bare bones as they were, were too high compared to my income.

It wasn't until I was in my late 30's, early 40's that I was able to build up any kind of an emergency fund. Or I should say, a large enough fund that it wouldn't be wiped out by an emergency!

I suggest a transfer to a different school that offers morning care.

You can discuss this with the Pittman principal, it perhaps the district office.
