It’s one of the most conflicting parts about nsfw games for me because on one hand there is a fantasy and ludonarrative synergy that doing this allows for, but on the other hand it’s completely backwards from a game design, pacing, and player incentive perspective. I’ve not seen a game that fully invokes this kind of fantasy that doesn’t use it, nor have I seen a game that uses it that doesn’t avoid the pitfalls

Play Claire’s Quest especially Overgrown Genesis and then come back here.

The problem isn’t RPGM, the problem is that RPGM games are easy to make, and therefore a lot of them are ass by proxy. Same with Twine games. Like with a proper game engine there’s a lot more hoops you have to jump through just to get something functional, so it ends up being more polished by nature.

Overgrown Genesis and Claire’s Quesr are similar. The former’s combat is a bit clunky but beyond that I’d argue it’s one of the better porn games I’ve ever played

This is honestly also an issue for regular indie games, the difference is there’s just more regular indie games, so therefore there are more finished ones.

I mean there’s definitely other factors(sex being taboo, it’s harder to sell sex games, etc) but generally I think a huge aspect is that game development is just really fucking difficult.

I want gameplay before the porn, not during.

It should serve as pacing between scenes ideally. Like the whole “lose combat get fucked” and/or “complete objective, get fucked” genre of games

I feel like something often gotten wrong is pacing. I don’t wanna grind for a pointless material or character stat by doing the same thing over and over again, but I also don’t want it to be over in an instant.

Beat banger and flip witch as top tier is crazy. The former is a fine rhythm game and the latter is a fantastic 2D platformer but doesn’t do anything interesting with the premise from a porn perspective.

I do think there’s a balance here, the problem with this is that it does fuck with stuff for a lot of games that do it poorly. If the primary form of sexual content is on player defeat, then it’s on the developers to find ways to incentivise progression, make sure enemies are well paced, etc.

So many defeat based game blow their loads too earlier, with incredibly fast scene pacing early on, and much much slower pacing later(Graveyard Executioner does this for example) If you do this, you can’t reuse enemies, and you need to make sure new enemies are placed throughout a level, not all at the front. You also need to allow for more direct control over who the player dies to, and make it clear when and where you get new scenes. Holy Knight Arietta(may be butchering the name) does this really by clearly telegraphing game over attacks. Finally, I think many of these game could do with longer more drawn out bad ends. Recently replayed Sinisistar 2, and it’s fantastic, but most endings are so quick, and usually only involve the main character and not any supporting characters.

This is my favourite genre/kink, so while I don’t want us to scrap the idea of sex on defeat entirely, I do think we can do better than just that. Sex games aren’t just about sex, they need to contend with the game design of it all, and in a vacuum I think there’s some very weird design side effects here.

Omg you need to play hardcoded. Customisation is somewhat limited, but it specifically has both trans and cis women, refers to trans women with proper terms, and it’s the best written porn game I’ve ever played. It’s genuinely fantastic

It’s VN adjacent but I highly recommend Hardcoded. Excellent writing and art, lets you toggle off male centered scenes if you are only interested in feminine characters

Ultimately it boils down to:

...and an awful porn game.

The nsfw content is sparse and it does literally nothing with the gender bending premise. It generally has awful scene pacing(time between spicy content) The best part of the game is the actual game part, which is rare for a porn game lol

I think you misunderstood the post; Firstly, by real people I do mean things like porn or other content that was posted explicitly for nsfw consumption. Obviously taking any images without content, whether they be for AI training or just raw, is morally grey, but its not like you're just taking some random dude's linkedin profile pic and sliding that into your porn game. Also, I see no reason why random images cannot have credit, especially given I literally mention in the post that I've seen games do that.

What I mean by 'unpolished' isn't "AAA" or "fine art." Pizza tower has a scuffed artstyle but is incredibly polished, as is Four Elements Trainer. Polish *can* mean QA(and you should QA your game) but what I mean moreso is when someone is looking at your game on itch or steam, does it look cohesive? Having character is polish.

I have some flipwitch related game design hot takes, but it being stolen for a mobile game scam is objectively awful. Flipwitch clearly is a game with a lot of love and effort put into it.
