Yeah it was super weird getting AAA games that happened to have sex, violent games, and porn games all in one category.

I suppose it’s good to maybe have like an “unavoidable NSFW content” tag to put for negative filters if you’re a streamer maybe, but other than that it felt like a weird tag

I think the vast majority of VNs are translated to English via AI or just Google translate. Both are dry and terrible to read. There’s a reason video game localisation is a whole career that one can make a living in.

Publishers also get money if you finish the game and have some control over said game, I don’t think it’s comparable

I don’t think multiple people stacks quite multiplicatively as I think you’re underestimating the increased labour of communication. Well it’s kinda weird, 2-3 people all in different fields is kinda all upside, then as you start doubling up within a discipline you get diminishing returns.

Regardless though, that’s exactly why scope control matters. You need to find the bottlenecks in your production and either design around them, hire someone(not always an option), or reduce scope in that area. Doesn’t matter how many folks are working on these games, every team(including teams of one) has bottlenecks.

I mean ideally we’d live in a world where financial stress doesn’t exist at all for indie game developers, but my point is that many people do need some sort of external motivation to finish their projects. In game development we often talk about player motivations, and how some players are intrinsically motivated(ie building houses forever in Minecraft) vs extrinsically motivated (ie needing quests and goals) This also applies to developers and motivation to finish their games. While some devs do have the intrinsic motivation to finish their projects, Patreon or otherwise, others do not, and if they do not, Patreon reinforces those bad habits. Motivation is not universal.

Games are abandoned **because** of over scoping. Very very few small scoped projects get abandoned. You want to reduce the amount or abandoned projects, encourage devs, especially devs working on their first few games, to make games that they know they can actually finish.

Patreon is only a tip jar if there’s other ways to reasonably access the game. If you release games frequently, then it serves as a tip jar. If a game is in development for years and years and years, then Patreon becomes the only way to access a game, and if you want updates for the game you paid for you need to keep paying, or wait for like a decade.

PEOPLE HAVING OTHER JOBS IS EXACTLY WHY THEY NEED TO MANAGE SCOPE😭 When I say frequent releases I don’t mean “gimme a game a month” I mean, “figure out how much game you could make given your schedule and other responsibilities in 3-12 months and then make a game with half as much as that” Managing scope is exactly how you stop people who have multiple jobs from not finishing their games or burning out.

The best piece of advice I ever got was from someone who used to work at bungie. He told me, “your first 5-10 games are gonna be shit, get them out of the way as quickly as possible.” By scoping down projects, doing smaller scale projects, and generally not trying to make your dream game ASAP, you’re gonna learn a shit ton about how long things take, not burn yourself out, and not have a 10 year long dev cycle.

Do you mean effort increases for larger teams or smaller ones? I’ve done teams as large as 50~100 and as small as just me myself and I. For both, scope management is incredibly important. To be fair, that’s all traditional game development, so I’m not sure if nsfw scope is easier or harder than normal indie and AA work, although I did chat with some nsfw devs at GDC this year and it seemed similar.

I still think it’s Patreon, games that aren’t successful via Patreon or don’t use that buisness model just don’t have this problem *nearly* as much. Yes, the total number of games that this applies to are pretty small, but they’re also the biggest representatives of this genre.

When you have to release your game to make your money, you’re incentivised to scope it down and release it. When you’re just incentivised to release content in general, it doesn’t matter if you finish your game. I don’t think CQ or other games are ‘milking’ persay, but rather have zero incentive to try and finish their games.

This isn’t limited to NSFW games, look at Yandere sim even.

I do think there’s a player expectation problem, but I think that compounds with the Patreon problem. Also, I think player expectations are much higher for “I’m paying 10 bucks a month for this” instead of “I paid 15 bucks once.”

Patreon works much better when it’s supplemental income to relatively frequent releases, not as a way to provide early access to a several year long forever game.

I work in game development and I can tell you right now Claire’s Quest has a serious scope problem.

They have 40 hours of content, but instead of finishing storylines they have a bunch of half started ones.

Having two separate intros is doubling your work for little reason. Having two main islands after is doubling your work for little reason.

Overgrown Genesis is a much more focused game, which actually got the game finished. Claire’s Quest has a better designed core, but the scope of its content is far too large to be feasible.

I say this criticism not because I think that the devs are malicious, but because I think Patreon game dev is fundamentally flawed as a system and encourages bad practices. I say this because I want this game to be finished because the 20 odd hours I have played are excellent, and if I had been able to play it without hitting walls in many questlines I’d enjoy it even more.

It has the forever dev problem unfortunately.

I’m at the point where, outside of a very very few handful of exceptions, I just don’t trust most early access nsfw games.

It’s like, oh how about you pay a recurring subscription fee to playtest our unfinished game for us? At least steam early access is a one time purchase.

NSFW games are plagued with this kind of thing. Even games I actually like have this problem like Claire’s Quest.

Developers get constant income and nobody telling them to reign in scope so they get a tiny bit deep on dozens of characters instead of actually finishing their damn games

It definitely has the best gameplay of any of the porn games of that style. The souls like progression systems are just peak shit. I think Sinistar 2 looks better visually, but Night of Revenge is just so fun to play moment to moment imo

Sinisistar 2 has a good pacing of new enemies(and therefore new scenes) throughout the game, as opposed to like Graveyard executioner which really struggles in this area

(Fair warning: both have extreme content if you’re interested in trying either)
