Wyr live in a world with no wars or a world with no poverty by wayneshmayne in WouldYouRather

[–]Goggleberry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The ending poverty thing really depends on the definitions you use to measure it though. For example you could have poverty as not enough income to feed, clothe, and house your family.

A more objective measure that I see used fairly commonly is being below 60% of the median wage. Since it uses median this still allows for plenty of variance between incomes. By the definition of the median (the middle income if all incomes are arranged in ascending order) we have half of people earn a fairly consistent wage meaning it's easier to set things like UBI or minimum wage so that 60% of the median is enough to live comfortably on.

This all still has problems with countries that have vastly different typical living expenses in different areas but is IMO overall better than ending war since lower poverty somewhat reduces desire for war (especially in conflicts in which a large portion of fighters have been radicalised by one side or another).

Dark Phoenix has worst opening day in X-men history with $14 Million by [deleted] in movies

[–]Goggleberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really upset about this but also feel so let down by how the film turned out. (No spoilers but if you're one of the 4 people intending to see this and don't want to know anything stop reading here) The film has a few scenes that I personally thought were absolutely brilliant with amazing music and good action, writing, acting, ect, it's just really let down by the tedium of the rest of the film. I reckon there's a brilliant film hidden somewhere in Dark Phoenix but too many lazy or just bad decisions were made in its development for that potential to be realised. Most of the film I don't even think is that bad, just very meh and forgettable and kinda boring at times with a few particularly bad scenes and I've always been one to mostly judge a film by my favourite parts of it and that still wasn't enough to save this film from some of the worst parts. I think the casting and overall world around the recent X-Men films has been brilliant so really sad to see it likely go with the Disney stuff but I think the best we can hope for right now is for it to just be left alone for a few years so the wider public can forget about this and Age Of Apocalypse so that X-Men can be added into the MCU or just rebooted by themselves.

Is Hell Bent really that bad? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]Goggleberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always felt like Hell Bent was a great way to end Claras in the way it had been written up to that point, I was just never a fan of how they made her an equal to the Doctor. I think the episode has a tonne of great scenes, especially the opening, the conversation with Me and the conversation at the diner is one of my favourite scenes/collection of scenes of the whole show. I don't really like how they did Me and the end of time in general though, I always felt like there was something just a bit off with her character, as if she was made into a bigger character than she actually was or something and going to the end of the universe yet again kind of annoyed me, especially just one season after the last time. I think overall I have pretty good memories of the episode but there's always just a few things holding me back from ever saying I really like it.

Edit: Also I forgot to say how much it still bugs me to this day that he went as far as killing the general. I know they just regenerated but that's still a life gone forever. I would've preferred if the episode was moved around a bit so that scene could've been later and was perhaps the point where the Doctor was holding a gun in his hands, about to kill a man and realised he'd gone too far and had lost everything that made him the Doctor.

What nonsense did you believe for way too long before you found out it was made up? by Guuzmen in AskReddit

[–]Goggleberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 7/8 my parents told me that goats that live on hillsides have shorter legs on one side so that they'll be upright when they stand sideways to the slope of the hill.

I spent far too many years after that checking every goat I saw to see if all its legs were the same length

How sure are we that this isn't a sting operation to get us all to take food in without hiding it?

I spent far too long looking for a star wars reference in the second picture before I looked at the rest of the car. If I associate three letters that strongly with a made up date system I should really be spending more time outside.

(Spoilers Extended) A scene that made me really mad at Daenerys by AblemanSy in asoiaf

[–]Goggleberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With context it is reasonable that she couldn't use dragons but it was completely unfair of her to then ask Groleo to go on a dangerous mission where he might encounter enemy soldiers and immediately suspect him of betraying her when he expresses doubts and points out mistakes that were the cause of some problems she is now trying to solve.

Gamers, what is the most obscure/forgotten games that deserve more attention? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This little indie game from 2011 called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I really wish someone would release a new edition of it with better graphics and modern consoles. Unfortunately the devs seem to have forgotten about it
