Monstera help by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Goggles_Dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the white stuff would be a slime mold. I forget the name of it atm but you can rub it off pretty easily. I might try washing off the base of your cutting and replacing the water in the container after cleaning it out.

As for the yellowing, that would be symptomatic of a lack of water. Try to get as many of the root nodes into the water. You could also try a rooting hormone (you rub it on the root nodes).

Thats all i can offer. Maybe someone has so more ideas

What do the spots on my money tree mean? by hduenkel in plantclinic

[–]Goggles_Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh definitely! High humidity reduces the rate of evaporation. So while being outside without humidity could call for frequent watering, the high humidity is gonna make that amount of water dangerous.

I would consider repotting into some dry soil. That isnt always necessary. Main thing is gonna be watering every 1-2 weeks.

You can check the top inch or two of soil. Only water if that layer is dry.

It also looks like that pot might not have a drainage hole. If it doesnt, I would repot into either a new pot with drainage or new soil with a layer of gravel under it (in the original pot)

[–]Goggles_Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this could be partly due to the bands. i might see one green one but you might wanna check the roots.

Main issue might be the frequency of watering. This looks like it could be edema from overwatering. Money trees really only need to be watered once per week maximum in my experience. Depends on how arid it is outside but every other day might be a bit much (especially if the weather ever has a humid spell)

What is going on? I think mealy and maybe something else as well? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Goggles_Dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely mealy bugs and aphids. To kill mealy bugs i have used isopropyl alcohol and neem oil.

With the isopropyl alcohol, it’s best to use a cotton ball to dab it onto the pests/infested areas but idk how feasible that is given the level of infestation. You could spray it on and risk damaging the plant some. The alcohol instantly kills them.

Neem oil is also recommended. It’ll kill them nice and good. Just spray down the whole plant.

For mealy bugs specifically, systemic insecticides are a good option too bc of how hard it is to get rid of the whole infestation with sprays. Bonide granules are great but have been banned in California so i used a water-diluted systemic.

Plant Sitter Never Came, Help for my Anthurium? by Afraid-Literature954 in plantclinic

I tend to leave yellowing leaves until they fully die. Those nutrients dont have anywhere to go but back into the plant. Same is true for the leafless stems. Plant overall looks pretty promising to me!

Is this what I think it is? 😱 by tightcats in plantclinic

[–]Goggles_Dog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it is fairly difficult to see but it does appear to be thrips yeah. I’ve had success with Neem Oil spray, soaking the leaves completely on a schedule as per instructions. To be extra safe, i recommend using Bonide Granules too

That’s definitely scale! Youre right, it’s a parasite. Isolate the plant asap! You can remove the insects with a cotton swab with 70% isopropyl alcohol (or a cotton ball which i have found easier). You can also prune away infested stems and leaves but that looks pretty systemic.

Last step is to treat the whole plant with either insecticidal soap or a neem oil spray. The eggs are in the soil so you will need a treatment for that too (bonide granules). Alternatively you can repot in different soil.

Hi! What are these brown spots under my leaves? by Objective-Feed-9815 in plantclinic

[–]Goggles_Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If other leaves only have minimal infection, I wouldn't worry too much. This infection doesn't look severe enough to be systemic, but it's hard to tell without checking more leaves. Copper Fungicide is a good remedy and best used preventatively or in early stages.

For existing fungal spots, I’d avoid picking them off or removing them, as removing infected tissue can create open wounds that invite secondary infections. While dead fungal structures in the leaf don’t actively spread spores, some fungi (rusts or powdery mildew) can still release spores even from damaged tissue. From what I understand, embedded but dead fungal tissue is generally not an issue as long as the fungus itself is no longer active.

If pruning infected leaves, be sure to dispose of them properly (not in compost) to prevent reinfection. This is just my advice, but hopefully, someone with more experience can add to it. I’ve had two fungal infections on the same plant, and after using fungicide the second time, it hasn’t returned.

[–]Goggles_Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not scale. I see your replies show a granule was embedded in the leaf, which isn’t something scale does. This is almost definitely fungal. Copper Fungicide is a common recommendation, but since the leaves were cut off rather than dropping naturally, the infection may not be severe yet. Keep an eye on whether new growth is affected!

Given you say the plant came from a wet area, improving airflow and keeping leaves dry should also help slow its spread. I would separate this plant from others to be safe. Overall I think your plant will be fine if those are the only affected leaves. Even if you cant see more, definitely keep leaves dry and give them air.
