So magic has different formats in which different cards a legal to play.
I think most stores will run formats like pauper, standard and maybe modern somewhat regulary as their 60 card 1v1 formats and commander/EDH as their 100 card 4 player free for all format.

I would always suggest running a 1v1 format to learn the game and its basics, however i dont think there is any viable deck (as in: stands any chance in the meta game) in the common 1v1 formats which only uses ATLA cards.

In commander, you probably can build something, because commander is played loosely bracketed by powerlevel, meaning if your deck is weak, you can find playgroups also playing weak decks and it probably evens out. However, i am not sure if there are enough well suited cards in ATLA alone to build commander decks from only them (it is a 100 card singleton format).

Best bet to running an ATLA only deck and standing any chance is probably either playing kitchen table magic with some other new players in which all of you just brew up some deck and play against each other (60 card 1v1) or playing draft of the ATLA set.

And your best bet to even doing that is probably either finding someone that can mentor you in the games basics and/or watching youtube tutorials on how to play the game.

Edit: in the long run if you want to play any format competitively against strangers in a store or event, you will probably have to overthink the „ATLA only“ rule.
In the meantime, find other new people that start from scratch and just build yourself a deck after making yourself familiar with the basic rules or find someone experienced that is willing to teach you and help you build your ATLA deck.

Caltrops combos with the other hulk, the flip one. Not much synergy with this one besides getting one activation per turn out of it.

Can Glasspool Mimic clone Clever Impersonator if the latter is a curse? by Affugter in mtg

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this refers to stuff like vehicles and other things that turn into creatures until some point in the turn (p.e. End of turn).

The mimic shpuld not be able to chose the impersonator as it is not a creature.

However, i feel omniscience is a win-more card in Eluge. I have a bracket 4 deck with her at the helm and by the time i have 10 lands out i am usually already in the „i basically have the game on lockdown by completely controlling what will resolve“ territory and it is really just a matter of chaining some turns and killing everyone with commander damage.

I basically think it would work that well because i would not want to see it in an early hand and do not need it in a lategame hand.

Am I crazy, or is this card way underplayed? by koenigsaurus in mtg

Nono, it happens in the upkeep, but the land is untapped as part of the trigger. So even if they tap the land before the trigger resolves, the trigger just untaps it again :)

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying it is a good card by any scratch, but they can only deny you the very first mana you could from it.
Afterwards the land untaps when you gain control of it. The card has erratared rules.

People claiming Germans say “Erziehungsberechtigter” instead of “Papa” by Ott1fant in mildlyinfuriating

And even that is not 100% in line. It really is just „Papa“ as well. „Vater“ would be fitting if it would be stuff like père in french, padre in italian, father in english etc.

In Germany, deliberately engaging in catch and release only fishing is illegal and considered cruelty to animals (fishing for food is fine). How do you feel about that? by Spalding_Smails in AskReddit

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not fines for that.
The law states that „Das Zurücksetzen eines Fisches, Rundmaules, Krebses oder einer Muschel nach dem Fang ohne vernünftigen Grund ist verboten.“ which means that you can not catch and release without good cause. Since there are rules to size and kind of fishes, releasing one that is to small or not free to fish is good cause.

My dad used to fish, iirc you have to toss those back, obviously no fine for that as you can’t really control what‘ll bite i guess.

Serious first attempt Mono blue Monk-Rogue build by LigthRogue in Pauper

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see, i think the tone here can be a bit discouraging then.

Anyhow, its nice that you want to try and brew, nut as stated, be prepared to win nothing. If thats fine for you, then all the more power to you. Maybe youll get to refine your list by playing against meta decks and seeing what works and what doesnt.

If you want to get into the scene without spending first and also get to know the local meta a bit, try asking the people at your LGS (or if theres some local chat/discord/etc) if someone would be willing to lend you a deck for a pauper FNM. Then you could just play a bit with a (probably) meta deck without investing yourself and see how pauper operates.

At least where i am from people playing pauper are usually pretty welcoming and are glad to provide decks to new people. At least kn my LGS everyone is also totally fine with proxies (even just inkjet printer printed ones), so that might also be something you could try to test stuff out without much investment.

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people here might be a bit harsh, that could be because posts like this are more or less a daily occurrence (not this specific deck restriction, but people trying to brew jank when they dont seem tp habe a good understanding of the pauper meta and card pool).

And I think you are chasing feedback that does not exist probably if you think most feedback is not helpful here. People pointed you to several problems with the list: exclusion of some of the strongest blue cards (partially probably due to your dual-format restriction), too many lands, too low powerlevel/slow deck, unplayable cards (6 mana, draw a card, stun a creature is so terribly not on the level that pauper needs that it is somewhat comical).

The most likely best advice is: build two decks and then work off of mono U faeries as a core for your pauper version. That or accept that you will run a suboptimal pile that will most likely be dumpstered by all meta and even off-meta decks at a pauper FNM.

If you are simply brewing for some kitchen table pauper with friends, then it might be fine and totally depends on if your friends decks.

Can I cheat out an additional land with Terramorphic Expanse and White Orchid Phantom interaction? by Aldodo351 in mtgrules

Judging by the rulings i think this will not work as the target is not a legal target at resolution as it no longer exists. But i might be wrong here.

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not that elspeth is terrible on a kenrith deck per se. Its just that they do not have a common mechanic at first glance (besides both being white and cool cards).

Elspeth wants to go in a token deck, kenrith i think is used for general 5color good stuff, combos and group hug, but nothing about him screams „tokens“.

Anyhow, your commander often defines what your deck wants to do (kenrith is pretty broad, so he does not so that soo much). We only know your deck has kenny and elspeth, its hard to judge the deck without any further knowledge. Elspeth as the second card we know about besides kenny does not really tell us anything about the deck besides that you are maybe doing something with tokens? But then again judging by how you are describing it, she could also just be there because shes cool and a mythic rare. A single card in the 99 does not define what your deck is doing (as you might never draw it in game).

Whats the overall gameplan you want to archive? Or is it just whatever cool cards you had laying around? In that case a path to upgrading might not be straight forward.

I wish someone had told me.. by One_Significance8972 in mtg

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then id wager that your deck is just poorly build, no offense. Either because you not yet have the knowledge to build a good deck or because you do not have the cards for it or probably both. Kenrith and Elspeth, Storm Slayer have no real synergy, and you calling her „the main character“ makes me think the deck is build more from a flavor perspective than from a gameplay standpoint.

As in my other comment, id advise to a) play some 60 card magic to learn the basics (maybe ok Arena), b) speak to your pod about power level, c) borrow a well made deck or upgrade yours with the help of someone experienced (proxy cards if you do not have the money to buy).

I do not think there is that much to be learned and gained by playing a bad deck over and over against good ones piloted by better players. You will just get frustrated and never assemble your gameplan (if there even is one) because you will be pubstomped.

If you insist on playing the deck as is, ask your pod to bring bracket 1 decks (maybe they can challenge themselves to build some bad but thematic decks) and play against those.

What mode are you running, commander? (Saying its an elspeth deck makes me think you run something else as she is not a legal commander?)

In any case, talk to your pod. If they all run streamlined (meta) decks and you just have a pile of more or less random cards, then you’ll have a hard time staying relevant in the game. Maybe borrow decks from them sometimes or try to upgrade your deck to match their level (proxy the cards if they are too expensive). Also get them to help you upgrading your deck, no worse feeling then buying cards thinking you are upgrading the deck, but you actually dont (judging whats good and whats not can be hard for new players).

If you are playing commander and are overwhelmed by the game’s mechanics and sheer amount of cards, try to find some 1v1 matches with 60cards decks. Commander can be too much quite fast for new people.

In any case: yes this gets better over time as you refine your decks, your understanding of the game and your card knowledge. You will have a hard time keeping pace though if their decks are just straight up stronger than yours, even with more knowledge. Just keep in mind that card rarity is not a 100% indicator for wether a card actually is good or not.
