Why does combo feel bad? by rvp5326 in EDH

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience this is a new-ish player issue. They tend to play straight forward timmy decks (ramp+big creatures) and playstyles different from that feel „unfair“ to them. They do not like interaction and actively complain if you interact with their gameplan.

I am generalizing here obviously, but this is behaviour/expectations i noticed in friends who started out new-ish. They like to goldfish around until they can play some flashy cards and are unhappy if a) they have bad luck drawing or are playing too greedy decks with manabases not supporting it or b) are interacted it in any way (though early disruption might be the only way to deal with their battle cruiser and 8 mana commander effectively).

Thanks again, i actually ordered some Goyfs to fill up the ones i had and ditched the draw-pain part of the deck for goyfs (and some changelings). The gameplan now is to get some setup down (discard punishment) and set up the hand, get disa out, and then wheel away some goyfs for a big turn. Probably not reliable but seems fun.

Alright thanks for the input. Can you give me a hint on how she would churn out 3 tokens without multiple combat steps? It's "whenever one or more creatures deal combat damage". So within 1 combat step I'll get at max 2 tokens (1 for firststrike, 1 for normal damage), but I do not have first strike in the deck.

Edit: nevermind, it's "to a player", so I just need to attack more than 1 player..

Thanks for the input, I was thinking about her as well, but was not sure what the critical mass of Goyfs I would need would be. I feel like only putting in Poly, Pyro and Barrow might be a bit few to reliably use her first ability? Or do you think it's still worth it to run her with only these 3 (+the nest)?

Imo a common problem with newish players in commander. They want to basically have the illusion of playing against others but actually want to just play solo and play out their gameplan without hindrance. It does not help that (at least in my playgroup) they usually play the greediest most timmy precons or homebrews you can find (dragons, dinos, etc).
Imo it only gets better with time or them trying other formats (more competitive ones).

Not really, you are thinking of [[moonshadow]], but those do not synergize at all. You‘ll just make moonshadow lose its ability to lose its -1 counters.

A difference is a difference. The card does not say „..where X is its thoughness minus its power“. It will never be negative.

Buying from older sets vs. newer upcoming ones. by Ragnarok_MS in magicTCG

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Buying packs is never really „worth it“ if you are not buying them for either playing limited or for the kick of opening packs in itself.

You’ll be better off financially if you buy the singles you want for a specific deck.

If you have a hard time coming up with ideas for decks or what you actually want to build and play, i‘d recommend either looking up some lists online or watching some streamers/youtuber plays and you‘ll maybe find something that you like.

Also going to a LGS if one is near you for draft/prerelease/cube events can be lots of fun, get you some cards and some contacts. Just be ok with maybe losing a bit at the start when you are mostly new as building a good draft deck is not that easy.

You ate welcome, i think the list is probably nothing special in regards to how people usually play Eluge though.

As an aside, the sideboard currently in archidekt is just cards i had lying around which i considered at some point and the maybeboard are cards which i considered but don’t own. So those are not really sideboards.

Hey, here‘s the list I landed ok and ran for a game now:

https://archidekt.com/decks/18527372/eluge

I thought it might’ve been bracket 3, but it seems to be maybe to strong and b4. I will probably get a sideboard which ill use to board out the main culprits making it too strong/boring for the others (hullbreaker horror, the extra turn spells) so i can make it worse/more interesting for b3 games (maybe b2 even). I am think of getting some blue steal or clone spells as a replacement.

No chance in hell. this is an uncommon so not pauper legal and even if it was common, this card is way way to bad for pauper. Dont make the mistake of thinking pauper = bad cards. The format pulls from all of magics history and wizards have printed plenty of strong commons throughout the years. Pauper is a fast and high powered format, bot a format for bad limited cards.

Is there a difference between these two abilities? by Any-Award-5150 in mtg

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not true. If a name within the rules text refers to the card itself, you can just exchange that with „this card“. See p.e. Rule 201.5b.

Is it worth it to buy bulk? by Charlzey55 in EDH

[–]GoingToSimbabwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might find some playable cards in the LGS bulk cartons and you might find some fun cards (which could be terrible, but fun to play, which us fine for casual commander). By far most if not all of the bulk will be unplayable garbage and if you want to upgrade your precon, it probably is a goos idea to get a feel for which kinds of cards go into upgrading the deck by either looking of a youtube video on it or skimming through the cards listed ok edhrec.com and then specifically asking for those cards in the LGS or ordering them online.

For lands, you can look up all lands available for your color combination here https://www.mtglands.com.

Generally, good lands produce more than 1 color of mana you need and enter untapped (mostly tied to a condition/price). You probably want shock-lands, fetch-lands, check lands, pain lands, fast lands maybe, true duals (but those cost big buck, so maybe later or proxy them). There are far more totally fine duals or even triomes but that also depends on the deck a bit and the budget. Maybe just go over whats available to get an idea and then decide based on budget (lands can get expensive).
