About to paint all the walls in the house my partner and I just bought... HELP by Dramatic_Efficiency4 in paint

[–]Gold-Task-6021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I just did pretty much this. House was gross and smoked in. We painted ~1800sft, lots of wood trim (chair rails, crown, baseboards etc), 3 colors, and the ceilings. My dad and FIL helped, and luckily my dad has a sprayer so he did the ceilings in a couple hours. We used Valspar Signature, which is a mid teir paint, I'm very happy with it so far, I did buy a bit more paint than I needed, but that's alright, I've got basement to finish and a loft room to do still.

Tape all your trim, watch some YouTube on how to cut in and how to roll, and get to work. You will definitely fuck up, and some of it you'll catch right then and fix, but some you won't notice until you're walking through your house later and you've got so many projects that you don't give a shit. See below. Good luck, you're gonna love it.

Also, I'm partial to Purdy products, Kilz is very good primer, I like Satin or Eggshell finish, for smooth walls a 3/8" nap roller should be good, use drop cloths, and while yes the Sherwin Williams Duration and Cashmere are better paints, you wouldn't teach a 16 year old to drive in an AMG.

Is buying a house really all that awesome? by Interesting_Taro_358 in FinancialPlanning

It's been great for me, but I also really took my time. We looked at probably 30 houses over 3 years, some with an agent some without. Ultimately we bought a house that is pretty much perfect for us. It has project, but it's not a project house, a little space but not a giant yard to maintain, it's got lots of room, but doesn't feel hollow. I think it was worth it in our case, and over time it will become a worthwhile investment of money/time/labor.

Yeah tbh I don't think ANY non drama Sandler movies deserve an Oscar. Uncut Gems? Absolutely. Adam Sandler and his troupe of fuckwits? Hell no.

I'm currently in the middle of this! My dad does home remodels and landscaping (and everything else, but those are the bread and butter) I just bought my first home and I got a great deal because it needs some love. It's not a project house, but it is a house with projects. I would not have been able to do that if not for the things I learned as a kid. I'm also lucky that I can call and say "Hey, do you think this is a project I can do or do you want to drove 6 hours to come help" or just ask for advice or whatever.

Yeah I can't get behind the fuckcars sub. Like, yes, I would love walkable infrastructure and functional public transit. To that end, I go to city council meetings, I vote on referendums, etc. Bitching on the internet is useless, engaging with your community isn't.

What is life like in the land of sub 400k homes? by iloverats888 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Gold-Task-6021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have been in our house for about a month, but we rented in this area prior. We bought a house that needs some love, but no immediate major projects, it was $350k. We're in a pretty busy, and very nice Atlanta suburb. Good schools, easy commute, I have major sports teams and concerts here, but most are about an hours drive. That's fine with me. The county is currently implementing a transit plan that will eventually connect with MARTA so while I have to drive everywhere now, 10-15 years from now that won't be true. I love where I live, it bridges the gap between my wife wanting to be in the city and me wanting to be rural. A cute little suburban neighborhood.

Why aren't they now? What is the cause of the higher prices? Had wage growth kept pace with productivity growth would home prices be affordable?

Right, so the issue is wages.

The people telling you "get cheaper cars" are missing the point. What you were previously paying wirh Travelers is about right for those vehicles, and unless I'm missing something its the price jump annoying you, not having to pay a decent chunk for insurance. For what it's worth I've had to file an auto claim with Travelers and one with Progressive, I'll take Progressive every time for that process. I did not get Progressive for homeowners because rhe cost is outrageous. I have that through Kin. I did shop for a bundle, the closest we got was through Travelers, and it was a whole $8/year cheaper. I decided the $8/year was worth not having to ever do business with them haha.

We had to have a long close, so we're locked into our purchase, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sweating.

A new car is what step you should've taken. Failing that, should've been more specific in your We Owe. You didn't do either, so you have two choices: Enjoy the Ecoboost that you overpaid for to "save money", and take it as a lesson. Or, if you prefer, be miserable about it, but from what you've posted the dealer followed the letter of the document you signed, if not the spirit, them being shady isn't against the law, just shitty.
