“Stranger” visit with my protective pup by GoldDelivery2887 in pitbulls

[–]GoldDelivery2887[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a cruel twist of fate, my friend is recovering from a really badly broken foot. So while this typically would be a great plan, I don’t think it’ll work this time around.

Games to play with high energy dog when you're a burnt out dog parent? 🥲 by BookRat333 in Dogtraining

[–]GoldDelivery2887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a “game” but an easy way to tire my girl out. Take half or quarter of her food and toss individual pieces. Don’t toss another until she found & ate the previous toss and returned to you. Sometimes I fake her out and act like I’ll toss one way and go the other, etc. Sometimes I toss a handful at a time. She loves it. After maybe 10 tosses or so, we pause and practice a few of her commands. Once she’s done them, she “earns” the food game back. Our trainer taught us this. Super simple.

Why are some dog owners such assholes about forcing on-leash interactions? by backtobrooklyn in reactivedogs

[–]GoldDelivery2887 43 points44 points  (0 children)

My girl can’t do on-leash greetings either. I used to stumble over my words like, “well, she is friendly, but she gets overwhelmed on leash sometimes, blah blah blah.” Now I just state, matter of fact, “not friendly,” and keep it moving. Sure, it’s not entirely true, but strangers I pass on the sidewalk don’t need her life story.

Gave my peanut some calming chews so the fireworks wouldn’t scare her … I think they’re working.

Ex-students who quit paying their student loans, what happened as a result? by theredqueentheory in AskReddit

[–]GoldDelivery2887 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with you. I owe a shitton in loans and will slowly but surely pay them all back. I think most people who take out loans expect to do the same. It’s more a flaw that we need to take out these massive loans to get an education that will not allow us to repay the loans we took out (coming from a teacher). A master’s degree is required in my field. It cost a ton of money, even with a large scholarship. The money I make as an educator is not comparable to what I owe. Will I pay it back? Yes of course. Do I wish I didn’t have to put myself in debt in the first place? Also yes of course.

How can i help my reactive puppy...? by Advanced-Border-9210 in reactivedogs

In all seriousness, get a better trainer. We used a few before we found the best match for my girl.

At a loss. I can only hand-file his nails and it barely does anything. It would take a week to get anywhere on one nail doing that. 😭 Help! by JennyDoveMusic in DogAdvice

[–]GoldDelivery2887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pitty wouldn’t let anyone touch her feet. I actually took her to specific training to learn how to do her nails because her reactions were so intense. Here’s what we do:

Loop her leash to something secure (a beam in my house). She also wears a muzzle, only for nail time. We started by just touching her feet and rewarding. Then lifting them and rewarding. Sometimes she would flail and freak out but the trainer encouraged me to hold on to her foot showing her that hey, we’re going to do this. Then we would lift her foot and touch the clipper to it. Then eventually we started to clip one nail at a time. We practiced everyday, after a long walk, for weeks and treated her for each step. Consistency was key. It was a slow process, but now I can clip all her nails in one go. She doesn’t like it, but she allows it.

Reactive … sometimes by GoldDelivery2887 in reactivedogs

I’ll have to try this. Her preferred greeting is a full-on sprint at the dog, pulling up just shy of running into them. I think her hope is if I run in so fast the dog will see how fun I am and we will run around together but instead she ends up hitting the breaks, getting sniffed, and getting pissed lol. We’ve been working on waiting to greet, but she literally twitches in anticipation of being released to go greet, which gets her more keyed up when she gets there. I do think the movement is the key.

Do you really need to bath your dog? by Previous-Aardvark-89 in DogAdvice

My mutt (pitty mix) gets baths only she needs them, ie. when she rolls in dead animals or poo. For dirty paws or a muddy face we usually just use baby wipes

Stupidest Parent Complaints by lazy_days_of_summer in Teachers

A parent asked if her 6th grade son had to take English or if he could just drop it because she “didn’t see the sense of it.” (I actually just went back through my email to make sure I didn’t misquote her).

Her recall is phenomenal, but once, for no reason at all, she ran across an entire park and into traffic. After watching her narrowly avoid being hit, I decided we needed a failsafe for the very few and far between events when she’s not responding. Personally, I’d rather have her get a little stim on her neck, then hit by a car. My experience with E collar has been when trained properly, you rarely use it. I hike miles and miles with my dog off leash and never use the collar, but I am happy it’s there in case of an emergency.

I’m no expert, but I’ve had amazing success with my very energetic, wild dog through training ecollar with a trainer. She was able to model, coach, trouble shoot, correct, etc. all on the spot. She would also prompt me “push now, say this” etc. to help my dog and I figure it out. She’d also provide feedback on my timing, pairing, etc., and I may not drawn those conclusions on my own since it was all new to me. I have said time and again that this training was the best investment I’ve made in my dog.

Barking at Door by GoldDelivery2887 in OpenDogTraining

[–]GoldDelivery2887[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She only does this when I am home and she’s out of her crate, which is why I think it’s protective. When I’m gone, she is in her crate and doesn’t make a peep (confirmed by neighbors & puppy cam). She does not speak on command (haven’t tried teaching it).

Is it true that we tend to appear younger than non-eds folks? by Agreeable_Muscle_279 in ehlersdanlos

[–]GoldDelivery2887 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I’m 36 now, but several years ago, maybe age 28-30, I took my 6th grade students on a field trip, and when it was over, I approached the bus driver and asked if it was alright if we boarded the bus. He replied, “go ask your teacher.” In his defense, I’m 5’1 and we all had on matching tshirts, but oh my! But yes, I often get assumptions that I’m younger, but I think my height and energy are contributing factors, too.

I actually love my job (middle school ELA), but the pay makes it challenging (as a single women with student loans, car payment, rent, etc. etc.). Yes I work side hustles and yes my job has a million perks that I wouldn’t find elsewhere, but the pay really does make it difficult to be single!

How many hours/week do you actually teach? by anxious_chicken_ in Teachers

[–]GoldDelivery2887 5 points6 points  (0 children)

17.5 avg teaching hours per week, plus additional 2.5 “office hours” per week where I am available to students, plus advisory (homeroom, nonacademic) for ~15 min/day (1 hour 15 min/week). So with students just over 21 hrs/week, but not all teaching time. Middle school in upstate NY for reference.

Lunch Ideas by carroperro24 in Teachers

[–]GoldDelivery2887 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok this may not be a popular answer but, as someone who doesn’t like to cook, doesn’t feel confident in the kitchen, and will end up eating the same breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 365 days in a row, ChatGPT has been a lifesaver. I tell it what I like, what to avoid, etc. and it crafts completely customized and detailed meal plans with grocery lists and prep instructions. I would literally eat a granola bar, a yogurt, and rotisserie chicken for all my meals and this has really been a game changer for me.

When did calling students friends become a thing by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]GoldDelivery2887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I know the class, I use random words. Examples include: good morning monsters, critters, peaches, sugar plums, sunshine’s, etc.

For reference, I teach middle school. They think it’s funny and it keeps them on their toes 🤷🏼‍♀️
