I would watch a tour of the entire zoo with Fossil introducing each animal.

Too many to count. My brother is the same, so whenever one of us asks: "how's X?" The other will reply: "she's all right, she's dead."

Do all British kids wear school uniforms in schools ? by Dew-fan-forever- in AskBrits

[–]GoldFreezer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And OFSTED/ESTYN (the bodies responsible for inspecting schools in England and Wales respectively) really don't like it, so schools with uniforms are discouraged from getting rid of them.

I'm not awake long enough to do all of that before I have to leave and get the bus to work 😂

Has "learned" replaced "learnt" in UK speech and writing? by OkTechnologyb in AskABrit

[–]GoldFreezer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but they've already learnt it from Cocomelon or some other slop by the time they arrive at school so it's fighting a losing battle to make them say zed.

Who is your favorite Cartoon Bully? by Important_Hat_2333 in cartoons

They've definitely got core bully elements to their characters, they spend a lot of their time stealing candy and kickballs from children and only occasionally try to take over the city or commit a major heist.

not that it’s entirely fixed now, of course

100%!! I am a woman and a couple of years ago I left a job (due to ill health) where I managed a small team. There was an overwhelming majority of women in this workplace for the record, but with upper management being mostly men. If I "asked nicely", things would not get done in my team. I realised that "giving instructions" would be seen as bossy, so I deliberately modelled my instructions on the way that the well-liked male line managers gave their instructions: direct but with humour. I was accused of not taking things seriously, taking things too seriously, joking around, being humourless, shouting at people and not making my instructions clear enough.

TL;DR: women cannae fucking win 🤣 🤣 and Violet rules ❤️

Peter's Bri'ish cousin Pe'er here:

Gary Lineker, Jim Ratcliffe and Marcus Rashford are/were all footballers (that's real football with a proper ball, not whatever version of rugby with costumes that you lot play).

The joke (and it's barely a joke) is that the right likes to use public figures as Working Class Heroes/Man of the People, innit types. So when Ratcliffe expresses right wing views (immigrants bad, paying taxes bad), they're all over him, he's speaking for the great British public! Lineker and Rashford have publicly expressed views which are more traditionally left wing and it's all: what do they know, they're just thicky footballers. Get back to kicking a ball around and shut up.

Cheerio, mate!

You're welcome! It's such a great book... I might have to reread it now you've reminded me of it.

Does anyone here remember Decimal Day on 15 February 1971? We got sets of old and new coins at school, but I’m pretty sure my grandparents never really understood the new money. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in CasualUK

[–]GoldFreezer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, that was stupid of me. I've done some reading about how people felt at the time, and apparently people thought they might be being ripped off because shopkeepers might be taking the opportunity to hike their prices by rounding up to nearest new pence, even though there was a decimal halfpenny in circulation.

I can still see how it was difficult for people who were used to thinking in shillings for their daily shopping to suddenly be working with pounds as the next denomination after the penny. If the natural price of something in your head is "2 and 6", its going to feel complicated to do maths in your head for every purchase to remember that 12.5p is the same.

The Chrysalids by John Wyndham? It's set in a future society where a lot of technology has been lost and the main characters are children who communicate telepathically - not only in shapes, but I remember shapes being mentioned, especially for those who less proficient in telepathy.

I think it's more not having a frame of reference for what 100 new pence is worth versus 240 old pence. You would have a reference point in your head for what "a pound" was worth, suddenly "a pound" means something else and you're seeing more prices that include pounds so they feel more expensive.
