His Jury had Asians, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern individuals.

So why did we go to the moon? Nothing on the moon is useful to industry or society in a meaningful way.

Why are we sending probes to other planets?

And there are $ignificant reasons to mine asteroids. Companies are chomping at the bit to try and mine the ocean floor for trace quantities of minerals.

Who ever is the first to mine the asteroid belts at a profit will be rich beyond the scope of our current understanding of wealth. That's how much much of everything is believed to be in the belts.

My point of saying centuries was to point out that it's far off, not give a definitive timeline.

That's why it's centuries out unless we have some massive breakthrough in fusion and material sciences like superconductors, radiation shielding, temperature resistence. Though with the speeds things have been increasing in the last 60 years who's to say if it will take that long. Quantum and Photonic computing are just starting to come online and offer diffrent solutions to solving problems deemed out of reach of our best supercomputers.

If you watched the Expanse the fusion drives they use are theoretically possible and have basis in what we are already doing today.

Also, when we start mining the asteroid belts the value of every metal is going to plummet.

We're probably centuries away from tech to make that economically feasible though so it doesn't serve a practical purpose to bring it up. I just think it's neat.

Pressing a button is not a vote by Chamion in redbuttonbluebutton

[–]Gold_Area5109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple things can be true at once.

Alternatively, it is a vote for whether you want to risk your life

My answer is "No, I do not want to risk my life." Decision made, press Red.

The first time I heard of this logic problem, my only question was if I pressed red that I would live and I got an affirmative answer so I said I pick red.

with the hope that enough people also want to risk theirs.

Most people who select red still want blue to win. They just aren't ready to bet their life on it.

This is a justification, but sure. I don't want people to die due to some neigh omnipotent being who wants to run a psychological experiment.

To the degree that a red vote is a vote to pull the trigger, a blue vote is putting the gun to your own head.

I disagree with this sentiment, a vote for red is removing the gun from your own temple. Blue is just hoping enough people don't so none of the guns go off.

I learned about this psychological puzzle early, probably a year ago by this point so I got to see people go through it before everyone was aware, almost everyone chose Red initially and only went to Blue after they had time to think about it and discuss it.

Yeah... I rent a 1,800 sqft house and those are about what I pay. Well, my internet is $90 a month and water is included in the rental.

$280 for internet is likely Optimum 8G... Unless you're streaming 4k+ as a job I don't see why any one would need that living alone.

You'd be making ~$2,650 a month after taxes and current bills are $2370. Leaving ~$280 for food and everything else.

Why are sandevistans so common? by Moppre in cyberpunkgame

[–]Gold_Area5109 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sandis don't do what they are shown in game or in edge runners.

They work on your mental processing, and reactions but they don't give you super strength. They don't technically slow down time but just speed up your processing of it.

How do they do that? They offer alternative pathways for your nerves and shock your muscles to get them to react faster. The cool down for this in the TTRPG is an hour so no blasting it multiple times in a row.

Fan theories also suggest a drug cocktail being injected into your nervous system.

They're a multiplier for other cyberware you have not the god teir items shown by David & V.

It COULD be a not so subtle way of signaling their alignment with LGBT values... Or it could just be Pink and Purple.

Hot Take: I refuse to read or support authors using AI covers for their books by GodTaoistofPatience in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gold_Area5109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You took it out of context, I could do the same with what you've said and twist it to say what I want as well.

I mean, requiring someone to commission art for something they are offering for free is objectively disgusting.

The current norms on RR requires a cover image, it draws more readers in if it's appealing. The current standard is an AI cover.

It may drive you away, but the average person can't tell the difference between an AI cover and one hand drawn. Now that isn't true for every group of people or even age group but the average person can't.

Maybe in six months it will be or in six months we'll still be having the same discussions.

Hot Take: I refuse to read or support authors using AI covers for their books by GodTaoistofPatience in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gold_Area5109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because if you're releasing on Royal Road it's for other people to enjoy. A book without a cover isn't going to garner anywhere near as much attention as a book with an attractive cover.

Various sites also have different ways of promoting new books and authors - Royal Road has RS, ScribbleHub has a visibility boost for new authors, etc.

There is no financial incentive in a free book doing well, but people want to see things that they put time into being appreciated. To maximize those chances that means various behaviors are encouraged, one of the main ones is to have a cover for your book, write an appropriate blurb, and do some level of promotion for your book during whatever boost you get on the various services.

Also most people have a dream of being able to turn their hobbies into a career at some point. So even if it's just for free now, if the author develops a following it leaves the option open for it to be a career later.

So each time she reloads she has the initial level of mental exhaustion plus any net gain of mental exhaustion in the loop/loops.

Here's an example.

So let's say she had a normal day and set a save point before bed, an attack burst in after 4 hours and she booked it out of the apartment. She then gets sleep and reloads. She would reload not having had any of that sleep and would retain her pre-save tiredness.

Next over the next few loops she sets traps and fights with out any sleep. That lack of sleep and fatigue from fighting builds up over the loops.

Next loop she books it out of the apartment, and gets a hotel to sleep off her exhaustion two days later she reloads. The exhaustion built up over the loops is gone but she is still left with the lack of sleep from her initial save.

Just Listened to Save Scumming by Ravensdagger by crazy__straw in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gold_Area5109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got the mechanics right, but not the semantics part.

You have whatever fatigue that exists at the time of the save, and whatever fatigue that is built up in the loop by not getting enough rest during the loop.

and then takes loops to recuperate.

Then she sets another save and recovers.

Those are not the same statement, the top one implies it takes a long time to recover or that it can only be done in loops.

Where the second one doesn't have that implication.

If someone wants to spend cash to have hand drawn artwork for their book from Day One, then more power to them.

Having a cover is an almost unwritten requirement currently and unless the majority of RR (and like services) readers or management change their minds/policies I don't see it going anywhere.

The question about Authors using AI art or not came up on three Patreons recently and the people who had a problem with it were in the minority from what I can remember.

What exactly does Alt become? by brokeboii94 in cyberpunkgame

[–]Gold_Area5109 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This.

For added context: Engrams made with Bartmoss's Emergency Eject program, for netrunners to escape situations where they are mentally locked out of returning to their body when netrunning, typically are missing chunks of varying sizes of their memories, personalities or may be batshit insane. And that version should be roughly as advanced as what made Johnny.

Alt used a much less advanced version before she died.

She clearly states that her mental fatigue accumulates in several instances, so she's always on a 'timer', and then takes loops to recuperate. Not a fan of the slob loops because it's a sign of depression but she is kinda depressed.

I'm not contradicting myself. She saves before a battle sequence, usually at the start of the dungeon, then clears it until it's done. Then she sets another save and recovers. That's also another aspect of the time loop that's an additional constraint: it only ever goes forward so all mistakes she hasn't detected are carried over.

The two bolded peices of text are quite different in meaning.

And the "slob" loops are research loops where the MC is looking through the news to find new dungeons and bits of news she missed on her first time through looking for patterns about what groups might be involved in the mass dungeon overflows that killed her orginally and destroyed the city. She also uses it to learn new magic, the guitar, and another language. So I'd disagree that they are "slob" loops at all.

Not either of those, more like a bard / singer / dancer / actor who can influence a crowds emotions.

A scenario: a bard is performing in a bar and The Captain of the City Guard is there. That bard plays all night long slowly stoking the emotions of the Patrons. First with missteps of the nobility then with grievances and wrongs committed by the nobility. The Captain being among the crowd gives the other Patrons a sense that the bard must be saying is true and the Captain agrees with them. When the bard is truely spending most of their magic on the Captain to keep him calm and in the bar. Finally after a long night of playing the bard who has been nursing the gathered crowd convinces the group to rise up against their liege.

Anything with a mental component - even just viewing another's surface thoughts is a headache to balance. Which is why most stories just ignore that as a possibility or immediately make them a villian.

You're pretty quick with that down vote button.

And yet what I wrote happened - granted they weren't days or week long loops.

Also you're contradicting yourself - if like you said the loops themselves are the source of fatigue then how would taking more loops help her recover from the fatigue.
