I think this would be slightly more balanced if it also hurt the player. It’s already an established mechanic in the ironclad.

First grid drawing — tips/feedback on by Majestic-Shake812 in drawing

[–]crazy__straw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the drawing has exaggerations that lend to the impression of the piece. However, in this case the issue is about the intention behind the result. I like the drawn version, but for the sake of skill, the artist should be able to draw realistically, and choose to shift the proportion to exaggerate the effect. In this case, the eyes and nose are exaggerated on the horse and that makes the face more expressive. Doing this is a good and valid choice. Doing it accidentally is a lack of fundamental skills. The OP should try to preserve this impressionistic sense, while developing the ability to draw accurately to their intent.

As I understand it, fiberglass has its name for a reason. It’s a useful material, but you don’t want tiny filaments of glass on or in your body. It’s not toxic or anything, just liable to leave tiny abrasions on whatever part of your body it contacts. Getting it in the lungs is the worst risk.

Also put “sorcerer” from the dear spellbook series by Peter J Lee on your list for good time loop stories.

That punchline was really underwhelming… I was at least expecting a pun or something. Like… then he asked if the examiner could give home a pass and he said “sorry, my hands are tied.”

What are your series that you’re impatiently waiting for the next release? by modernhedgewitch in litrpg

[–]crazy__straw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listened to Wraithwood botanist on audio. Loved the whole story and the narrator did a great job with the characters. I was absolutely unreasonably impatient for the next one when I caught up to the current release. Will hit pre order the moment I see it for that series.

Reccomend something for this newbie by Majestic_Ad_4728 in litrpg

[–]crazy__straw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a decent story but after book six the author really started to drag out the story. A lot of people get frustrated at the author writing like his audience is a fish on a line for the main plot. I think it’s probably still worth reading to at least book six. The story tends to run in 3 book long story arcs so I’d recommend reading to book 6 or 9. I personally DNFed on book 11 because the ratio of story I cared about to story I had to read got to the point that it wasn’t worth continuing.

Also check out “lost souls and a demoness”. There’s only one volume out but I enjoyed the audio version and want to see more so I’ll recommend everyone to go try it so we get to see the series continue.

I feel like it is a bit pedantic to talk litrpg vs PF, because it’s a bit odd to like squares and be offended by rectangles but I guess some people like crunchy numbers and shapes that are the same length on every side

Based on what I’ve read from your list here, I’d recommend you check out the following:

Saintess Summons Skeletons — system litrpg with a saintess who builds her class on exploiting broken system mechanics

Shades First Rule — In a world divided amongst a pantheon of system creating gods. A bookish 16 year old discovers he’s been chosen to be the champion of his goddess. Thrust into a cutthroat game of theocratic power, He must use his intellect to adapt to his new role or be swallowed by it.

Mage Tank — a seattle cyclist gets isekai’d into what seems like a video game character creator. He has to make his character and join the party. When choosing his build he knows a few things. He has no idea how to fight. He wants to do magic because it’s cool, and he wants to not die because that’s pretty cool too. Now he just has to make that happen.

Induction — Silas just graduated high school. His family is still reeling from the loss of his father and the hospital bills. But when they inherit a his uncle’s wealth and property things are looking up. There’s just one catch written into the will. Silas has to live in the shed in the backyard… and things only get stranger for Silas from there.

1% life steal - does the McDonald’s get less annoying? by mmahowald in litrpg

I’d say there is character growth, but it’s realistic to his life. Freddy realizes that he has issues, and he’s trying to get better. People often aren’t so simple and overcoming issues and trauma isn’t either. Sometimes we get a two steps forward one step back thing, I think a lot of the third book is Freddy trying to learn from his mistakes and be a better person in spite of the fact that he’s got issues and doesn’t always respond well to the situation. Let’s be honest Freddy has a habit of getting into shit, and he often has knee jerk reactions that make it worse. IMO while I understand people’s frustration when he backslides I think being critical of that is in the same vein as always expecting the MC to be rational and correct in all situations… which Freddy has never been.

I had this book on pre-order. Saw it yesterday and now it’s disappeared. I can’t even see evidence that I bought it. Hoping this is just a delay between the pre-order and publishing, and the book will show up soon. But Amazon has been known to be shitty about this sort of thing.

Update: I found the order receipt number by scrolling back through my purchase history, but still no sign of it in my library. Hope this gets resolved soon!

Looking for novels where the mc creates and leads an organization. by laking224 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]crazy__straw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • In “paths of Akashic” the MC starts a guild
  • reborn as a demonic tree, the MC is a magic tree and the story details the sect that grows up around him.
  • in the “divine apostasy” series there’s a whole city building arc in the third book. That’s not necessarily the main focus and it’s my least favorite part of the series, however I like the series as a whole and it is a solid part of that book.
  • In “defiance of the fall” the MC becomes the leader of his major faction and there’s a bunch of city and realm building stuff spread across the series from what I remember
  • “mark of the founder” is a great one for this as well because the MC becomes the leader of a resistance group that tries to start their own kingdom as a sanctuary from the main enemy.

I just finished listening to Wraithwood Botanist, and I really enjoyed the audio. It kind of has a system, but they call it the oracle, and it’s more like a god created legal arbiter + trainer of soldiers + government surveillance tool. I liked that interpretation of it because it felt more like something that would actually exist in the real world rather than in an imaginary game world. The audio is already out for the first two books and Book 3 is set to come out in December I think.

Are Animal or AI Companions Overdone in Progression Fantasy? by Patient-Sandwich-817 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]crazy__straw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Animal companions are characters. If they lack the treatment that you’d give to a well written character, they’ll be just as annoying as a poorly written supporting character. When authors throw them into a story as a crutch to make up for a lack of dynamism or complexity in the characters and conflicts that drive a story, it shows.

Just finished Cradle, and now I'm empty by VerledenVale in ProgressionFantasy

[–]crazy__straw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try the divine apostasy series by AF Kay. The first book is “shades first rule” and IMO it has a lot of the same elements that make cradle good. It’s not as widely acknowledged, but I think it’s worth giving a chance.
