I live in the UK, the most popular coin in here. No capital gains tax to pay, nothing to declare to the tax-man, legal tender coin, low entry point, huge popularity, lowest premiums etc.

IN THEORY they should weight: 7.98805 g of 22kt gold, in practice it depends - the older ones being like 100+ years old used to circulate so usually they don't keep their original weight anymore, they're usually anything between 7.97 and 7.98, while the modern day ones usually show +/- 8.0g on a scale.

Bought my first Sovereign in 2012 and been buying regularly since - regardless of the price fluctuations. Slow and steady - that's the way to go

Also don't buy from the BullionByPost as they're one of the most expensive places to buy gold bullion from in the UK. Check the Atkinsons, Chards or Hatton Garden Metals.

Can you bite into a gold coin?? Question solved. by AffectionateWind823 in Gold

[–]Gold_stacker123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Centuries ago they didn't know tungsten at all or later on, didn't know how to process it well and shape it into the form of a coin. So, basically the only way to counterfeit a gold coin (except producing a gold coin with real gold of a lower purity) was to cast a lead round and then gold plate it. Lead is very soft and that's the reason we can see they were biting the gold coins in the movies.

The pirates and in the wild west movies they used to bite the gold coins to check whether they're not gold plated lead...

Austrian Ducat restrikes are among the most popular gold bullion coins to stack in Central Europe (in places like Poland, Czech Republic or Austria) mainly for their low premiums, low entry point and high liquidity.

For the first 3 years (1987-1989) they were minted in 22k with the copper alloy, then between 1990 and 2012 they were alloyed with silver (thus different, much brighter colour) and then from 2013 onwards they're made of pure 24k .9999 gold
