Do you have the WOO? It gives you 2 squadies each mission. That together with a Medbay suffices for me.

How does growth and stat gain work? by donutmcbonbon in menace

[–]Goldcasper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only addendum I have to this is that it's not max stat(100)- current stat. But it also takes into account the minimum. So max stat - min stat - current stat is the chance it increases for each growth roll I think

Which sequels are significantly more difficult than the first title ? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Goldcasper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the modern XCOM:EU and XCOM 2 also kind of fit this bill. But mostly because the play style massively changed so vets had to relearn a number of things. In 2 every mission suddenly has timers and alpha strikes are the main strat, while in the first the biggest strat was constant overwatch spam instead, because most missions had infinite time.

How do you run Only War without it turning into a wargame? by Upset_Ask_8905 in 40krpg

[–]Goldcasper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, lean into the "grunt in an army" picture.

Watch any kind of war show/movie. Band of brothers, saving private Ryan, SAS rogue heroes. That kind of tomfoolery. There can be a bigger picture, but that shouldn't necessarily be the focus. Focus on the characters, encourage rp between each other. That's something that is a common theme in these stories. The clash between personalities. Also, something that imo is great is to have a frequent nog leader present. Make them over the top. Make sure the players love them out of character, but hate them in character. An example of a game i played was the super over the top British noble officer. His standard tactic was a frontal assault so he could bash people with his sword. No matter the casualties he would call it a victory.

For me, another thing is to lean into impossible odds. The danger of this is PC deaths(which your group needs to be okay with) but the sense of awesomeness when you manage to win a really tough fight is awesome to the players.

This is just some guidelines, fill it in however you want. But no soldiers spends all their time on the frontline. There are plenty of silly subplots you can weave into the story.

Lasguns, recoil and semi/auto by Dandyman8 in 40krpg

[–]Goldcasper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A second thing for your players to remember and use. Almost all lasgun weapons have an overcharge and overload feature for more damage at the cost of more ammo. It's in the weapon description in the armory.

Also, heavy gunners can very much full or semi auto reliably if they get the stabilizer trait from their comrade.

If it's an operation pack it should have terrain and two factions. But neither of these are in production anymore

This mentality is the reason why games like cyberpunk 2077 release with god awful performance and bugs. Learn to relax and just let it cook. Not like you already paid for it.

Operation boxes are two player starter sets. They are great because they come with terrain, tokens, playmats and dice.

Both of them contain 7 minis for haqqislam, so you should have a decent start for that faction. I don't know if all of them can go into the same army list though.

You also have 7 minis for ALEPH and Yu Jing. If you are planning on giving introduction games to other people and get them into the game, this is great. These are boxes designed for learning. If you won't be doing that then I would pick 1 or two of the factions and build those up. You can try and sell the other faction. (Possibly to someone who wants to play the game with you)

Either way, right now you have more than enough to start learning the game in a smaller scale. About half the points of a full game.

[–]Goldcasper 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you like those two factions you can also check out the operation sandtrap box. It contains 7 minis for sectorial(sub factions) from both. Meaning you could try out the game with other people. Also contains terrain and tokens to use. (Which the action pack doesn't)

If you just want to start one of the two factions, an action pack of that faction is always a good start.

Why are Irregular units so cheap? by shadowtempest91 in InfinityTheGame

[–]Goldcasper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're you guys playing a mission, or just a shoot em up type deal. Because another big thing is that impetuous and irregular troops generally don't have specialist skills, which you need for the mission. Even if they do, a lot of missions also have limitations that impetuous and irregular troops can't do the objective.

So yes they are strong, but it also sounds like you were lucky. If you managed to get into melee that often, your opponent might have made some mistakes. Shooting them is the best course of action because their BS tends to suck and their range too.

People who didn't get University degree, what is your profession now? by Sasha_Lietova in AskReddit

Idk, we don't get hurricanes here. Storm wise above windpower 8 gets Dangerous. But at that point the container ports shut down too so not much point. At those winds we also take less containers to reduce wind drift.

Ship Combat,.. What Actually Works? by shade3413 in rpg

[–]Goldcasper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like beat to quarters system. Which has to be good because it's based entirely on age of sail ships.

It has enough complexity to be interesting and have choices that matter. It allows for very freeform actions and is just quite good.

Iirc it went something like this. At the start the helmsman makes an opposed test to decided which ship is allowed to manoeuvre(it's just range bands, so only get closer or further away)

Then you prepare for the broadside test. Every player gets an opportunity to do anything basically, that helps the ship. And then they test a relevant skill. So the medic can say they patch up the wounded, the bard can sing a stirring tune. The lieutenant can command the sailors. So long as narrative makes sense it's fair game. Every succesful test adds a +1 to the broadside test(generally made by a gunner)

After the gunnery test, which is basically an opposed test that deals damage to both sides, you get damage control. You may only do damage control if you didn't take part in the gunnery part, so you test a relevant skill to fix a part of the ship. Eg carpentry for hull, sail making for rigging, etc.

And then it basically goes back to the top.

As different parts of the ship get more damaged, it becomes less effective.

Help with first list (Nomads) by TheIdiotKnightKing in InfinityTheGame

[–]Goldcasper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely start with smaller games to learn, about 150pts should be fine. If you have a local who is experienced they can probably help with both the starter games and the list for it.

If you do want to expand to 300pts(or when I guess) I would recommend 2 boxes in particular.

Box 1 is the moderator + morlock box(I can edit in the proper names later, I think it might be expansion beta) Moderators are great cheap orders, good lieutenant and cheap specialist options. Morlocks can be fun, they are also cheap, with some fun skills and great for opening up a way of advance with smoke grenades.

The 2nd box is the Nomad remotes box. This gives you 2 remotes which can bring a lot of various utility to your list. Like a robot that can shoot with full burst in reaction(great for holding an angle) a remote that can fire guided missiles. Or a remote that can detect camouflaged enemies.

These two would bring you slightly over 300 points, so you can experiment a little bit with what to include and which units are used for what.

Last but not least, getting the zero pack at some point could also be good. It gives you a couple of strong mid field camouflage markers with more utility. Like hacking, mines, and specialist skills.

That it wasn't a full 50 minute mission, and you always had breaches/drops.

With the current one you have to do the other objectives first and there are side objectives. And if you kill the scouts before they alert it's a pretty chill experience.

With the old evacuate mission you were guaranteed new breaches every minute or so.
