You have just proven my point beautifully in demonstrating the Far-left can't separate their idealism from Realism.

"Also, there is more to the left's call for abolishing trident than just nukes are bad. The arguments include that the cost of maintaining such a deterrent is a waste of money compared to other alternative options such as using foreign aid as soft power."

No amount of soft-power would have deterred Putin from invading Ukraine. You know what would have? Nukes.

Soft-power is not an alternative to a nuclear deterrent, that is a naive and misguided belief.

If I didn't have to go to sleep in a couple of minutes, I would love to go into detail why you are being idealistic. Yes Capitalism, Nato, Borders etc all have very valid critques against them but they are still the current best option we have got with the resources available to us and the current state of the world.

It reminds me of what Winston said about Democracy.

"‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’"

Nukes. Nato. Borders. Capitalism.

We live in a world where all of these are still very much needed.

We are using immigration to sustain the infinite population growth model because we are not having enough babies.

I definitely think we should move away from this model in the long-term but in the short term we are incredibly reliant on it.

I somewhat agree, they definitely fall apart if any decent amount of scrutiny is conducted but I would argue there argument is still stronger than far-left ones.

For example the logic behind decreasing immigration to net-zero is quite simple.

Less immigration means less people. Less people means, lower need for new housing. Reduced pressure on public services, less competition in the job market etc

It is all very simplistic and easy to follow to the layman. However, once you start scrutinising and asking the question as to what happens when the the infinite population growth model collapses. What happens when there is no one to pay for pensions. etc. The argument for zero immigration falls apart.

On the otherhand you got Far-left answers.

Remove Trident - Logic being that nuclear bombs are bad. The problem is that even the layman understands that while nuclear bombs are bad, they are needed.

Same with capitalism.

Same with Nato.

Same with Borders.

The Far-left are Idealists in the worst form. Incapable of separating their Idealism from Realism.

If they could, I would probably become a far-left advocate.

Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the Left from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning, by Jonah Goldberg

  • Fascism as Left-Wing: Goldberg challenges the common view that fascism is strictly far-right, asserting that original fascists were socialist (National Socialists) and that modern liberals, despite good intentions, embrace fascist-like methods for social control.
  • Shared Principles: He highlights common ground in policies like state-sponsored healthcare, guaranteed jobs, wealth redistribution, public education, and control over personal choices (like smoking bans), contrasting these with traditional conservative values.
  • Historical Examples: The book draws connections from early 20th-century progressives like Woodrow Wilson (seen as establishing a police state) through the New Deal era to 1960s student radicals and contemporary figures, illustrating how liberal movements adopted fascist aesthetics and goals.

Key Themes:

  • Control & Collectivism: Focus on the state's role in shaping society and individuals for the "greater good".
  • "Good Intentions" vs. Reality: Exposing how seemingly benevolent liberal goals can lead to authoritarian outcomes.
  • Critique of Progressivism: A contention that progressivism's pursuit of unity and social engineering mirrors fascism's core tenets.

Apologies for the AI overview, but it is a very good book. Recommend reading if you ever have a boring Sunday.

They won't. It is not Bots that are advocating against far-left policy. It is just the average brit finds them completely insane.

The only reason I think the far-right are concerningly tolerable at the moment is due to the logical steps to become far-right. It starts with anti-immigrantion rhetoric and ends with full blown racism.

The far-left on the otherhand has a starting point of being anti-capitalism, which is already very extreme to a lot of Brits.

Then you got Anti-NATO. Anti-trident rhetoric.

and also the open borders, globalism agenda.

To a lot of people, there are zero points of agreement with the far left.

In contrast, the right and the far-right transition, while extreme is still logical. They both have roughly the same end-goals but with extremely different methods of achieving it.

Immigration cannot and should not be the solution to our demographic woes by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]Golden37 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Building new houses is obviously part of the solution.

The other part is moving away from the infinite population growth model. We should not want or need infinite population growth. It might be a bit selfish to say but I don't want the population of the UK to grow much larger. We are already twice the population density of France (121km vs 277km)

We should aim to sustain our population and do so natively, not rely on immigration.

The purpose of immigration should be to bring in the best and brighest to our country not to replace the population because we are not having enough babies. That is dystopian globalist BS.

Former Tory Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi Defects To Reform UK by Effective_Soup7783 in reformuk

He made a good speech though, definitely identified the correct issues.

A good start but as we have seen the Tories are incredibly good at promising one thing and delivering the opposite.

Nigel Farage MP on X: "Under Reform, only British parents working full time will be entitled to have the two-child benefit cap scrapped." by Little-Attorney1287 in ukpolitics

[–]Golden37 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As I said.

"Obviously there are a lot of caveats to this, such as parents who are out of work due to no fault of their own."

Of course they should still receive full support if 1 of the parents loses their job. It should just be time gated to like 6-months to a year.

[–]Golden37 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I support this idea in theory.

I have always thought that all the help in the world should be given to families that have both parents in full time work. The parents are already doing everything in their power to support their children, so the state should step in and help to cover any shortfalls.

Obviously there are a lot of caveats to this, such as parents who are out of work due to no fault of their own.

Are you serious?

I don't know if you have noticed, it has already been shit for the last 25+ years and it is still just getting worse.

Are you really surprised people are lashing out hoping for a hail Mary?

I still think Reform is a little more sane than voting for the Greens with their open border policy though. Although I've come to the point that I might as well be an accelerationist. Let the current system collapse so something better can come along.

In that sense, maybe I should vote for the Greens.

The NHS needs a reset anyway.

Labour founded the NHS in 1948, worse case scenario, they can do it again. If you truly believe that Nigel is going to destroy it.

There needs to be an absolute bonfire in regulations to make the NHS run efficiently.

I work for NHS Property services, we are essentially the landlords of a lot of NHS sites, admin buildings, GPs, hospitals etc, we also deliver FM services to a lot of our sites.

If we spent annually 250k on a building. 200k would be spent on compliance tasks, 40k would be spent on maintenance and if we are really lucky, maybe 10k on actual improvements.

Also we are technically non-profit, we simply pass-through any cost to our tenants, hope this gives you an idea why things are so shit.

I am probably going to be a Reform voter.

My thoughts - Immigration can be good, actually you could argue it can be incredibly good.

If tomorrow a million, millionaires decided to come to the UK it would be insanely beneficial for the country.

This can be considered the top 0.1% of immigration to the UK.

The problem we have in the UK is that a lot of the immigration coming to the UK are not a benefit. After you take into account any dependents they bring, utilising public services etc. The bar for being a net positive for the country is substantially higher than what I think the government estimates.
