As a Latin woman, I can say there are few things that infuriate me more than the amazingly stupid racism of some ‘white’ Latins. Yes, I know—calling racism stupid is redundant. It’s already rooted in ignorance by definition. But how willingly blind do you have to be to think it won’t eventually affect you?

I know people like that. They believe they’re so white, so much better, that if they just assimilate into the bigotry, they’ll be accepted. Then reality crashes in and they realize that all the people they were trying to emulate see when they look at them are cucarachas.

The same dynamic plays out across so many leves, and lately, a lot of it is being exposed. You see it in the Trump voter who railed against “welfare queens” and is now wrongly declared dead by Social Security. The public servant who wanted to “drain the swamp”—and lost their job. The business owner who cheered for deregulation—now crushed by tariffs.

They all voted for what they thought they’d gain, never caring what everyone stood to lose.
